Less is more.....i think?.....that.....if you are doing a circle show ...not s sidewlk....less is more....
in other words...its better to do less magic....just build and then do what you would usually end with....i think its better than filling your show with great magic....although that's not wrong...but look at whos the most successful street magicians...gazzo...nick nicholas....they do basically one trick in a 45 minute show,...and make more money than anyone....if you are a magician like, say dante...his show is self building...he doesn't get the audience to make noise...the show creates that...and the interesting thing is....my theory....you should always pick effects that...if someone shows up in the middle of your show....they will understand whats going on....particullarily in a circle show...thats what dante does....he does coins....he does a a card trick.....what do they call ....multiple selection...you certainly can catch up fast there.... in a sidewalk show....10 to 20 people...it doesn't matter cause you have already built...you don't need much...so you can do that card trick that goes on and on...... I think I'm right here...you might disagree...and I'm certainly rambling....the ramblings of kozmo...no one really cares but I like to talk.... koz |

Sounds like good information to me. And I absolutely agree with it.
When I was in N.O., which is the only time my wife actually stuck around to watch my street act, (she had no choice, I got her commitment to video my routines in N.O. But when I perform locally, she always has better things to do than watch her silly husband play with magic. Oh well... ) I would do my show which consisted of; some cards, another effect (ropes or something else), and close with my rings, over and over again. So my wife asked me later, why did I just do those few same tricks over and over, when I know so many more, and certainly have way many, many more at home? I tried to explain, but have to be careful so it doesn't sound like I don't need all of that other magic... But the actual reason I only use a few effects is that it flows for me, I get better from the repetition, it all packs small, the routine is easy to remember, and it builds nicely to the finale! I hadn't thought about it before, but I especially like your advice about keeping it "open ended" so that people can pick up what you are doing, anywhere along the line. I don't think you are rambling Koz, but if you are rambling...... ramble on! BroDavid

Wow!....someone listened....danny and I had this conversation the other day.....this my friends is good stuff...well at least I think...i could be wrong....this is how the best do it/....i have spent the last week working on how to eliminate magic versus how to ad it....strange right...but look it....if its interactive....the audience is going to like it so much more...cause its real...its NOT regurgitated lines spewing out of your mouth....now I'm talking about a circle show...not so much sidewalk....very difficult to understand...gazzo talked to me one time ....in passing....magicians....what do they do when they are failing....they do a rope trick...try to find some other magic....thats not it....bro reminded me of why it works for me....i make friends...thats the most important thing...make them your friend....let them know they are experiencing something that's real....this bond between you and them.....they will stay....all the new guys come here and look for advice...cellini told me this...make friends...and then you have something....the magic just doesn't matter....do good work...smile.....while you are insulting them...if that's what you do....but entertain....god I'm rambling....could be the vodka....
hope all is well on this saturday evening...so late...go to sleep kozmo....go to sleep |

Yes-you are must definitely rambling.
I think that the wisdom of what you say is applicable to other branches of magic as well (the "Bizarrists" are building stories-while the buskers and hoppers are making friends). What truly amazes me is taking it to the end of having ONE TRICK IN 45 MINUTES-WOW that's entertaining! Please ramble on....

Well...its about money....people would much rather be entertained than be amazed...its the truth...we don't like it but its the truth...being fooled is often frustrating for an audience....but making them laugh....if they don't like what you are doing they will walk....thats a fact....if you can build and build and build then you will make more money...build using your personality.....and then do the best stuff....now understand...we are talking about a horseshoe or circle show....give them a little...not much...and promise them something very special at the end.....it works....but the art of it is to keep them till the end....till that special thing....circle show...
sidewalk show...watch the cellini art of part one dvd...sunny holiday...thats how a sidewalk is done...great magic all the way through...works....but you are not trying to build....you are just pefomring magic and making them laugh...if you try to build on a sidewalk you have problems because of the size of the show....keep it small and get more mopney per person..... koz rambles on |

I'm new to street performing, but what I'm finding is instead of trying to get as many people gathered, that it's best to develop a report with a small intimate group and be charming. Make them laugh and think of you as a friend. I find they are more willing to stay and give offerings. Am I missing the big picture or on the mark? Thanks!!
Chris

Nope...thats part of the big picture...the other part is to get audience bigger so you make more money per show so you can do less shows...thats big when you get older

Thanks, Koz. I'm still learning and not quite at that level. My ex lives in new Orleans ( works at the Audubon Zoo ) and I visit her once a year. Always wanted to try Jackson Square, but I hear you have to have permits and they are hard to get.

Koz, thanks for the inside skinny. when I was there visiting, I didn't see one magician working in the area. Now, it was summer and it's hot, but I'm from Phoenix and I think the New Orleans weather is so much nicer.

Koz, once again, you hit the nail on the head with a simple statement.
"People would rather be entertained than amazed." I see that so clearly now. When we ar just tricking them, it us vs them, when we are enteringing them, it is us and them. You bond and make friends. That is what impressed me so much about your sidewalk show, they just love you, throughout and after the show. Thanks for helping me understand how it happens. And Chris, As far as performing on Jackson Square if they will let me do it, they will let anyone perform there. Get there early and find yourself a spot that isn't permanently staked out, and go for it. You will learn more in a hour of performing there, than you will learn in a month or thinking about it. I had nasty weather (taught me about weather management) thin crowds (helped me learn what draws), big fast maoving crowds (how to get them to stop and grow the pitch) and I am anxious to get back this next year in early December and do it all over again. I have been putting to use all that I learned there. I have all of the videos, and DVDs, and thoguht I was pretty well grounded. But you can know something in your head, but you haven;t really learned until you have applied it real life. I had no problems working locally in our town, but it is nothing like doing it in the big easy, or any other big city. And now I do way better in my town because of what I learned. As far as magicians, Istawa seems to be almost always out there on the Square doing his bird act, and closing with the chair levitation, and then alternating with a juggler. So maybe you just missed his set. It certainly is "interesting", to watch from a performer's standpoint, he pours out a bottle of water to mark his circle and actually has folks begin to stop and watch, wondering what he is doing, and what is that he is pouring out, etc., which I found pretty interesting, and he also draws a pretty good sized crowd. But , Oh man. Comparing Phoenix weather vs N.O. Weather, and N.O. is nicer. If you are talking the summer season, you have to ask yourself; do you want to be toasted dry, or soaked in your own sweat and then toasted. It is like the difference between bad, and badder. That is certainly one reason why Kozmo goes North in the summer. But both places are pretty nice and sure beat snow and ice, in the Winter. BroDavid

Thanks, Bro david!
I fell so much in love with the atmosphere of N.O. that I didin't mind the humidity one bit. Of course I vollunteered at the Zoo so my ex and I could be togetehr, so after moving wheel barrel after wheel barrel of maanure all day, performing magic would be like a vacation!

Whew, moving manure in N.O. on a hot summer day.....My nostrils are scrunching up just thinking about it.
I guess almost anything would be like a vacation after that! BroDavid

Definitely don`t do New Orleans in summer, unless you`re an amphibian. Just left N.O. last weekend & was getting hot & humid then.

At least you get to leave the humidity. I live along the MS gulf coast, and boy is it hot and muggy, and it's only May. I also love N.O., being half Cajun myself, but it has a very dirty and unsafe feeling to it. I was looking forward to moving back to the South from South Carolina and performing in NO, but it just has that uneasy feeling. Would much rather be back in Savannah, GA, which is like NO, but a little smaller, cleaner and you feel safe. But hey, that's just me
If anyone is down this way would love to meet up and talk shop, not too many magi down here (MS) to chat with. Nolan |

Koz,
You need to write a book and while you're at it, put out a DVD of your act. You've got great stuff. You've been doing this long enough to generate another income source. I'm like most of these guys, we're always looking out for good solid information, stories sell. Bill |

I was speaking to a non-magician friend the other day who said he had seen a busker recently. When I asked him what the busker was like, this is what he said: "He spent half the time getting the crowd to come in close, it became really annoying and the audience was getting frustrated." In addition, he said, the one thing I don't like about those type of shows is the audience participation. I am there to watch, if I wanted to be out there doing it I would become a performer".
I think it is ok to do less magic if you can actually entertain the audience by talking or whatever. The cups and balls may be "one trick", but there are several effects in that "one trick". It doesn't surprise me that people get so much out of it.
