Hi, everyone!
I was recently invited by a few members of the Ontario Child Evangelism Fellowship to teach them some tricks. Problem is, most of the tricks I know are card tricks. I know lots of other tricks, but I’m not entirely sure which ones would be the best to pass on to them. If you guys could send me a list of tricks or routines I should teach along with a brief description so I know which trick you’re talking about, that would be great. Thanks, In His Service, joe stoo_ped@hotmail.com |

I would simply recommend going to the local library, going to the children's section to find some decent beginner's magic books, and selecting a few tricks from there.

Avoiding cards opens up a WORLD of possibilities: ropes, coins, rubberbands, newspaper, dollar bills, silks/handkerchiefs/napkins, etc.
You should have no problem finding a wealth of effects to customize for your needs. I recommend the "Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic" for a variety of tricks and ideas (including some pack-flat/play-big/low-cost illusions). It's one of those books everyone should have in their library, anyway.

Consider using common items they have around the house. the classic cut and restored rope, paper tree, Coin in the elbow, rubber band tricks.
Things that don't cost, and are common. The above from books are good. The Cub Scouts have a real nice book with lots of common household items to do magic.

I'm surprised that no one suggested Dock Haley's magic shop.
http://www.gospelmagic.com/ Steve Varro, Who bought it when Dock Haley went to be with the Lord, Has an excellent selection of tricks and books. Along with Duane Laflin at: http://www.laflinmagic.com/ OK, back to the original message. I do childrens church stuff, which I believe is the type of stuff you're looking for, things that take little, practice (although we all know the 3 secrets of magic: 1. Practice 2. Practice 3. Practice therefore, The list: 1. The "Needle thru the balloon" (doesn't need much explanation, it is a great trick you can do as soon as you learn the secret, you just need to practice some patter for it, and almost all magic shops carry it.) 2. The "Lotta bowl" (produces unending, almost, supply of water) another Great trick that has a good message (widows oil barrel, Gods unending blessings...) 3. Slush powder (disappears water) many uses, easily used in conjunction with Lotta bowl. 4. TT, go to the magic shop nearest you and ask. Great utility item that has boundless uses. 5. Hot Rod (moving spots) I am sure there are Gospel uses for a regular one, although I can't think of one at present. I am experimenting with making a Gospel hot rod, maybe someone can help us out with an illustration for a regular one. The above are generally simple tricks that can be learned quickly. Other good tricks that require a little more are: 6. Cups and Balls (balls penetrate cups) (I have always had trouble with a good illustration for this one, but it is a great & easy trick) 7. Sponge Balls (Disappearing and reappearing balls) lots of directions to go here 8. Cut and restored rope (open to lots of ideas) 9. The professors nightmare. (3 different length ropes become the same length and then go back to original lengths) Rope trick showing how in Gods eyes we are all equal. etc... Well that should keep you busy for awhile, and off the top of my head that's all I can come up with at the moment. More later. Hope this helps Steve zzz |

The electronic rating pen ($3.75 at Penguin Magic)is another great trick for children's workers to have handy. I carry it in my jacket pocket on Sunday mornings and when I want to make friends with a child who is visiting, I whip it out and go into the presentation, "Let's find out on a scale of 1 to 10 how much God loves you..."
