Anyone able to suggest some totally ungimmicked coin magic (preferably with UK coins)? (sources for where to learn would be good)

About 2/3 of the material in Modern Coin Magic works quite well.

Kaufman Coin magic isn't bad either although I'd probably start off with Bobo's.

Once you've read Bobo's modern coin magic. Then finished Coin magic by kaufman. You may want to look at some material by David Roth, either his video series, or his massive book, Expert Coin magic.

Bobo is a good start but you might want to have the more advanced texts by Roth and Kaufman available as well. You don't have to master everything in Bobo before trying some of the Roth material. I think a good video showing what the sleights should look like in invaluable. I wish they were available when I started doing this. I highly recommend Rubenstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights. I don't have any of Michael Ammars Coin Videos but based on other videos of his I have that might also be a good choice. Once you are facile with sleights using regular coins your gimmicked coin magic will be much stronger.

David Roth's Expert Coin Magic by Kaufman is the Old Testament of Coin Magic. He uses a few gimmicks in that...but in the rest of the 400 pages, he talks about non gaff work.

The OLD testament? What do you call Bobo's? Cave paintings? There was coin magic before David Roth, and there have been a few updates since then.

Bobo's is the New Testament (I know, I know, it was written before....but I am using the SIZE distinction).

There is a video of David doing his prop tricks. Funny thing is he does not use gaffs. And there he tips something NICE that he did not tip back in the 1970s. Enjoy.

Roth is brilliant to learn from.
Bobo too. If you really get into coin magic and your sleights are very good then using gimmicks will make you look like the master. If used correctly they aid performances and makes magic with coins unbelieveable. Good luck. |

Jon,
To what video are you referring re: Roth? Marty |

Sorry Marty, secrets are not for the public threads. If you have the tape, he starts off by discussing the thing a bit.
