I've been looking for the metal to make my own sword through the neck type of sword. One reason is I need to make a replacement sword for my sword through the neck. I have used the standard tape measure in the past but it's not easy getting the paint off. I had found raw unpainted metal for this when I lived overseas but haven't had much luck here in the US. Of course I haven't needed it 'till recently. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Instead of stipping and painting the tape measure, you can always just cover it with a metallic silver adhesive sheet (mylar-like). It will look like a shiny silver sword blade.

Contact Mak-Magic. They made some swords with excellent ruler material. They do sell replacement blades for their equipment. Contact them. You will have to cut them down as their swords were really long.
Paint remover should remove the the covering from a ruler. I have heard that the image still shows through after cleaning. I have an original Roydon model and Haines House of Cards have the rights to this model. I ordered a new blade through them, but the ruler was not chromed so I had to purchase the mylar from Abbott's to make the covering. It is sad that no one can find the ruler company that makes these. I worry when I need to replace my Nielsen Sword thru Body. They wanted $200 for replacement blades. Now they do not offer the item any longer. Very worried! |

I have stripped the yellow off the tape measure blades in the past. I found that paint remover and sanding did it. Also, it did not leave any marks, just metal. The downside was the metal was pretty dull too. It looked like metal, but you get a better looking blade with the silver mylar. I bought a roll a few months back. If someone wants some, contact me and I can sell you a few feet at cost. Otherwise, just do a search on google for "chrome Mylar tape" or "silver mylar tape." You can get enough to do 50 swords for about $25.00. This is much cheaper than using Abbotts as a source and you get the same material. Additionally, you can likely get the material at an auto detail shop, if they will sell just the materials.
As far as those searching for blades, I found Sears had the best metal for them. Stanley and the premium tapes were too stiff. The Sears had identical flexibility to the sword I bought years back from Abbott. quack |
