So, I do those bits first, then realize that "Awe, that ballon just won't work," toss it in my dump bag and then switch to using the balloon pump. If I were king... I'd stick with just blowing them up by mouth. |

Good grief.
really cant use mouth coils from the mouth. you are probably going to tell me I cant fall off my chair during my funny chair routine cause kids will try to fall off their chairs. or I cant use flash paper in my shows. or I cant juggle cause kids will try to juggle and drop the ball and step on it and fall down the steps and then its all my fault. i don't believe in the super man effect. yes we need to use common sense around kids but come on mouth coils being a bad thing. sorry disagree. my hilarious mouth coil routine has been a staple in my show for 20 years and will stay for another 20 at least. it is one of the most requested both by kid shows and my corporate shows. now there are some things I do to make it "clean" after I produce the first part of the coil I tear it off and then hand a clean part to the volunteer to pull and walk to the back of the theatre with it,. thus the full 80 feet are stretched out from stage to the back of the theatre. looks awesome. its the perfect climax to my funny routine. i don't see the problem with blowing up balloons from the mouth Yes I do that to. I let them fly during my doggy bag routine (well its jeff hobsons routine I rewrote it to work for me) look kids eat dirt and bugs and are overly sanitized and medicated today! use common sense but at the same time don't give in to political correctness and gosh darn it have some fun for those kids!! all that being said. in my lecture I do share several other productions for a mouth coil that are not from the mouth. here are a few i have a routine with a mini change bag and some silks and at the end I say the trick works with my little mini rabbit in the bag. I will pull a mini rabbit out of the bag --i reach in and pull just a little of the coil up and it looks like a rabbit ear I then have a kid take it and pull and then they start walking back and keep pulling and it gets longer and longer and funnier. you can also use this as a HAT coil style. now the coils I use and sell are the best out there in my opinion as they are so versatile. with this style I use I pull about 3 feet out and then break that off. now its a little looser so that when I steal it I can easily grab and pull the end to have it start to flow. the way I now do it is to have a penny taped to the end and wedged back into the middle so that all I have to to now is steal it and give a little shake and the penny falls out starting the flow of the coil. then you can scoop up all the coil when finished and produce a dove or what ever you want. i have a few other uses and for my mini coils that are like hat coils I used to use them as mouth coils too they are mylar. you can do some neat things with them as well. ok got to run. lots of shows this week and yes doing my mouth coil routine in each one of them. woo hoo. so guess that means I am a dork too! sam

I have been using coils for quite a while now. I used white coils in my egg can routine. And I stopped placing them in my mouth, just because it is unsanitary, especially working hospitals. I was not worried that kids would try it, how many have a mouth coil. I agree with Sam.
But with the many ways I tried coils, what got the best reaction was the most simple of applications. Borrow a bill or napkin, any piece of paper, fold it in to a tube. Reach in the tube producing the coil and handing back the bill or paper. With empty hands reaching up for a high 5. I also use a large coil from party type stores , in my "Invisible Paint" as a finally. It is over 90 feet, I have the kids and parents all tied up with it. You can even pull it from a toppit or inside coat/vest pocket. |

When a prospective member for IBM Ring 103 asked me to sponsor his application, I told him I would but said I wanted to preview his initiation act. In part of his act, he produced it from the top of his hand after tearing up a strip of paper. My suggestion to him was to tape two coils together, one "face up" and one "face down." Then when he produced the coil, he pulled from both the top and bottom of his hand, which for some reason seemed to be more deceptive than pulling it out only from the top. Of course, it made twice the pile of paper at the end, which also added to the effect.
But I still prefer myself to do the classic coil from mouth. I've been doing it that way for 50+ years for birthday party shows and school shows and never had a single complaint from any parent or teacher. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I've used mouth coils from the mouth for over 20 years. Kids love it. No parent or teacher has ever complained, as a matter of fact I see them laughing right along with the kids.
Kids copying? What in the world does that mean? How are they going to copy a mouth coil? Even if it was something they could copy the whole notion is silly. If you are going to eliminate any trick that you wouldn't want ta kid to copy you would have to eliminate levitations, escapes, anything with animals, etc. For that matter you wouldn't even want kids to watch super hero movies or road runner cartoons. Ridiculous. I suspect the real objections is from people who consider it "gross". Well it isn't. The coil appears magically and is totally dry. When Bill Malone pulls cards from his mouth is it gross? While I'm sure it is for a tiny minority it is hilarious for the vast majority who realize it is a TRICK. He isn't actually vomiting up cards guys! |

Depending on where you are in this small world of ours depends on how far the political correctness brigade have marched down your area.
I use mouth coils but not from the mouth. I always judge the situation I am in and if the requirments are right then I use it as a bit of a gag as I send a young helper back to their seat. I explain that there is something sticking out of the top of their shirt at the back and call them back before they have had chance to sit down. When they get back it is an easy matter to put a mouth coil at the top of their shirt and pull out a bit and then send them back whilst holding onto the end or sometimes I just hand the end to them and they just keep on pulling it out to great laughter. Balloons, I always use a pump, the main reason is that I can't blow them up by mouth but I also see it as a bit of an issue blowing them up by mouth but maybe that's just me. Over here in sunny (NOT) UK where I am, we have a big argument that has been blown out of all proportion concerning Punch and Judy where the political correctness brigade are trying to ban it saying that it promotes physical abuse to women but that is another matter altogether !. Yes the PC brigade are on the march and wherever possible I try to "fit in" to a certain extent. In the end is it not better to air on the side of caution than to risk being at the mercy of the PC brigade and possibly harm your future career ?. Stuart.

If you are going to let people dictate silly things to you then you are not supporting the reasonable people who resist. I'm not saying we shouldn't pick our battles though. I just think the way you phrased it makes it sound like rolling over too easily. If I truly thought I was going to lose a huge percentage of my business over mouth coils I would drop them but I'm not going to drop them over a few opinions on an internet forum. |

I have a bunch of mouth coils for sale; they were only used one time in practice and never in a show....
I'm selling them at a great price.... |

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it yet, but watching "The World's Funniest Mouthcoil Routine" by Robert Baxt ( http://www.robertbaxt.com/product_mouthcoil.html ) definitely changed my opinion of the practicality for this simple prop.
Regardless, it has a ton of uses in any production routine, most of which certainly don't have to involve the mouth. One clever use is for seemingly pulling all the color out of the Magic Coloring Book. I believe that was Danny Orleans idea, but I could be mistaken. I'd like to give credit where credit is due. Besides, it's absurd to think kids will try this when they never see the actual mouth coil load and therefore have nothing to replicate. Mouth coils may fall under what Jolly Rogers calls invaluable bits of business. Even as a silly filler between the magic, removing this from your act is depriving kids of a terrific packs small plays big production effect that most kids find amazing and funny. Barry Mitchells Bubble Gum Mouth Coils may seem disgusting, but it's still pretty hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6GehbJ9IP8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Swas9S5C3Y GZ milks it for all it's worth, and always gets a great reaction from it. - Gary |

Many years ago I bought a bunch of throw streamers at a flea magic flea market. A single unit is easily palmed or fits in a TT. Imagine the uses table hopping or as a running gag in a kids show. "Ever seen balloon inerds?" and pull a throw coil from an inflated balloon. Lots of uses. By the way, I'm in the don't do the mouth thing group. Kids generally don't have mouth coils, but have access to all kinds of regular paper.

I recently saw an older magician (from our magic club) do the mouth coils for a Special Olympics group of kids. He used marshmellows instead of paper to start the trick out. After one of the kids and he ate a couple of marshmellow he swapped in the coil for another marshmellow and had his wife assist with the rest of the routine/pull. The kids all loved it, clapped and even a few parents sitting around me commented how cool that trick was. I asked him about doing this routine and controvery of it. This was his comment. "I've been doing this for over 50 years and have NEVER had a complaint from a parent. It plays big so why would I take it out of my show?" It's all about carefull presentation.

That's a terrific idea Snidini. Worst case scenario, this might encourage kids to put a marshmallow in their mouth which is harmless.
Then again, last night I dreamed I ate a 10 pound marshmallow. When I woke up, my pillow was gone! >>>> rimshot! My 6 year old loves that joke, so please overlook my attempt at "humor". - Gary |

Jokes that connect with our magic....Nice...
One could also do multiplying marshmellows ala eggs, from the mouth. ending with the white C. or if you are using colored MM.......

Although this thread is a wee bit old.......mouth coils have been on my mind of late. Duane Laflin uses a dra--r box and will put one (maybe even a large type coil) in it...and doesn't even really show the coil all that much; he just sort of starts pulling it after he shows the box empty then re-opens it.
Anyone ever use one in another box/gimmick/prop?? I have a thing, works fairly well with kids 6-10 (roughly) when I have an assistant sit in front of me on a chair, and I hide the cool in my hand and 'adjust' their chin......then suddenly start pulling paper...as if it's coming from their mouth.........gets a great reaction from a warmed up audience. But I'd love to sort of 'hide' on in something or near something. I just think bright paper coming out of something where it shouldn't be would be a great effect. I dunno.....just musing.
His face isn't really this long in-person!

Before there were mouth coils, there were "garlands" costing a quarter each, which were made to be used as production items. They disappeared with the coming of mouth coils, but are making a come-back as party decorations: http://www.orientaltrading.com/fall-colo......garlands Unlike the old garlands for magic, these come in a choice of colors and themes. Unfortunately, the days of 25 cents each are long gone, but they have the advantage of being able to be reset and reused many times.

As he handed it to me, I simply trapped a palmed mouthcoil between the inside of the bucket's rim and my palm. In that position, I could turn the bucket upside-down, slap the bottom to show it empty, even show the inside empty, then produce 25-feet of colored ribbon. The kid loved it. So did his parents. I imagine it would work well in a show, if one simply palmed a mouthcoil before reaching for a small opaque bucket or other container. I actually start and end my children's shows with mouthcfoils. A standard rainbow mouthcoil to open and a Mylar-foil coil to end. |
