I'm working on some ideas to illustrate the following scripture (particularly the bold verse)
Gal 6:8-10 The one who sows to please his sinfulnature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for in the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportnuity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. I have a vague idea for using jumbo Three Card Monte in an illustration. I also thought about some type of trick that has a volunteer following many steps and finally making the "magic" happen. Or perhaps a routine where I fail, and then after repeated attempts the "magic" happens. However, nothing is coming together right now. So, I thought I would place the verse on the "table" and see if it generates any ideas that you would care to share. Regards, Scott .

How about Miser's Dream? It certainly fits the "reap a harvest" theme. You could come up with a routine where you make a few coins disappear and talk about how we often invest in others (by sharing God's word and His love) without immediate results. Then switch to Miser's Dream to show how in due time (God's time) there will be a harvest.

Craig,
Good idea. I could work with that. I really want to emphasize the idea of perseverance. And I would love to use an audience member in the routine. But the appearance of money would definately tie into the Reap-a-harvest portion. Thanks for the input. If there are any other great ideas out there, feel free to present them. Scott .

What about trying several times to make a scarf disappear (with comedy wands if you choose) from either a change bag or a switch can, etc? The magician failing syndrome. But you do not give up! Then it does vanish, and reappears where you want it to, like in a 20th century silk set, or a clatter box, or in a crystal casket. Or you could customize a visible colour painting with drawing of a field that is planted, but not growing. You pull it out a few times, and it doesn't colour in. Eventually the picture comes out all coloured in, with a bountiful harvest in the field. Or you can do a ring in nest of boxes routine, and illustrate persistence in trying to find the ring. You have to keep on looking in the next box, for "the prize". I use ring in nest of boxes to talk about Matthew 13:44-46, with how we are to seek the kingdom like looking for a valuable pearl, or a great treasure. Otherwise, my routine is similar to Sammy Smith's. There is a commercial trick called "The Goofus Plant" that I *think* (if I remember correctly) might be perfect for this application. The flower doesn't want to grow, you keep watering it, and then eventually it does grow. You can find it on the Hocus Pocus site, and Abbott's also sells their version of it, too, I think. Are these ideas the type of help you are looking for? - Donald.

Donald,
Yes! Your suggestions are just what I am looking for. I really wanted to work with this passage, but for some reason, I was drawing a blank on this one. Attempting to vanish a silk may be the ticket. Simple concept to follow, and that will help the illustration stick. Plus, I have used the 20th Century Silks in all my shows until recently. This will bring some freshness to them (for me). I love the idea of the comedy wands too. I plan to use this routine for a debut of the new Veggie Tales video (Sumo of the Opera) at a church. The theme of the video is Perseverance, and this verse will help tie into that message. If anyone else has thoughts on this, please post them. I've found that (to paraphrase scripture) there is wisdom in the council of many. Scott .

You could use a Crystal Silk Cylinder. Try to change the color of the silk to no avail (use through out the show kinda as a running gag) then at the end produce a large streamer to show that not only did you do it but you could tie in the harvest part also.

You could even use a 6 bill repeat. Never tire doing good because God will supply resources.

Kent, you have added another good idea to the mix. I actually performed the show for this church a week ago. But they are going to have an encore performance of the entire event next week. So, in order to provide something different from the last show, your idea may fit nicely. However, since I don't have a Crystal Silk Cylinder, I'll use my phantom tube (which can produce a 50' streamer).
By the way, I don't condone adding new tricks just days prior to a show. But I know the message I want to present, and the "trick" is something I have used for many years already. All I am looking to do is customize it to the theme of the event. Scott . ------------------------ Neal, yes. Your idea would fit well also. You posted minutes before my response to Kent. See, there is wisdom in a multitude of councelors.

What about torn and restored newspaper or cut and restored rope.

Well a few things come to mind here for me.
One: Mismade flag with a change bag. As hard as you try the colors are not there or mixed up, but if you keep trying you will gain the reward. For a little extra kicker you could replace the American Flag with the Christian Flag to show that the harvest we should strive for is based in Christ. Two: Tricky Bottles. Each time the spectators bottle ends up opposite of yours explain that the bible says we should keep pushing on even when things don't seem to be working out and if we do this God is true to his word and blesses us with a bountiful harvest. Three: Vanishing Bandana. Although terribly funny the point can be made, that sometimes in our human minds the instructions of God seem to make no sense and sometimes we just don't understand how they can acutally work, but they do...as the banana vanishes. Just some random thoughts. Jim |

Jim,
Interesting ideas. As it turns out, I did a short 20 minute show for this particular event. One of the routines I "broke in" was the Vanishing Bandana. However, I just used it for it's fun-value. Since the item that vanishes is really a banana, and not the bandana, it seems a bit confusing to tie in a biblical lesson. I do like the mis-made Christian flag idea though. That would fit very well with this scripture. Thanks for all the great ideas. Scott .
