These figures are amazing! They are the beautiful and profesional I have ever seen.

Does anyone here own and use one? Are the controlled with a regular lever stick? How do they handle?
Thanks

Hey amigo,
Yes the Robert Mcray figures are incredible.
I don't own one (I'd love to) but here is a link to a thread on the Café that has some posts by at least one person who does. Enjoy -

I used to own 2 McRay BigHeads but had to trade DNA... but I did keep GORT who now co-hosts for a TV show
To be totally honest, I did not find DNA to be a working figure for an actual show but please don't take my word for it... other vents may think otherwise.

I own Deeder, one of Robert's three carved basswood Bigheads - which he now calls Spoonheads. My friend Ken Groves owns Howard, another McRay creation. I've also seen the one in the Ventriloquist Central collection. Robert used to state on his site that Bigheads are mechanical sculptures and some are used by professional vents.
All operate by headstick, Deeder's is straight, later Robert created a trigger style. The early mechanics were rough - McRay was learning so that is to be expected. The mouths were very small, making the limited movement hard to see from a distance. On Howard, Ken still had issues with some of the mechanics and reworked them himself. The head is somewhat fragile and has cracked several times. Robert has always made the repairs. I was told the figure in the VC collection was retired there because it was difficult to operate. The levers were close together and would catch on each other.
Overall, they are gorgeous and Robert is a genius at creating characters. I love his work. I wouldn't make one a main character though.

Fortunately for me, Gort is a workable figure because of his trigger style headstick. He looked so cool in TV
I'm hoping that after some TV exposure, I will soon be able to use him more often in live shows.

I own thurston and I'm just starting to work him into my show.
he makes an awesome figure and he created mine to perform a trick.
he does work with a stick and the handling is fine.

I now own "DNA". I had to refurbish some of the controls after they were inappropriately altered by a previous owner. He now works as good, or better than when originally created. His entire body is a "Head", so there is no headstick. His controls are similar to that of a McElroy with the typewriter style keys. Six movements. A magnificent work of art! Also one of the more unique of the McRay creations.

Terrance is part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection. It was Mr McRay's very first pistol grip style figure and was created for Mike Robinson. It is a wonderful character but Mike was just unable to use the figure because the controls just were not positioned correctly and also the hand room inside the body was just too little for Mike to be able to control the head. He was disappointed to not be able to use this figure and therefore donated him to the Ventriloquist Central Collection. I will say this he is a terrific looking figure and everyone who visits the collection always comments on him. I have also done a video on him showing the controls which you can see on the web site.

"DNA" is also for sale. Actually I will be taking offers. A lot less than he originally cost, and in excellent condition.

Mark Rubben was at ventHaven selling off his collection of BigHeads. He had purchased the entire remaining collection when McRay was going to stop making them. Apparently Robert changed his mind.

News flash!!!
Robert McRay's "DNA" has just crashed through my room's window and into my suitcase.
He's now part of my cast of characters... and I'm now part of the Bighead community.
Thanks, Duane.

I love Robert's figures. I own four of them. My favorite is still my first one. He's one of the rare few wood carved figures Robert made (I have two of the few wood carved figures he made). Joe Cappuccino is so easy to use and an amazing character. Lot's of laughs.
