Piracy seems to be a rampant problem around the world. It's not just magic either -- Hollywood movies, music, software, etc. are all pirated.

I hope that these practices will at least slow down in the future. I can imagine a world in which all of the above industries cease to exist because they are not profitable any more. It's not pretty.

I purchased "Front Row Sankey" from Penguin Magic, and to my surprise it was a burnt DVD. I was expecting a pressed DVD and was very disappointed.

that's because sankey made them like that. Has nothing to do with penguin. Penguin dvds that they make are all pressed to perfection. Its really not a big deal because its not like its a fake, its just not pressed. You cant really press only 200 othewise its pricey. that's most likely why sankey did that. No different then some of these vcd's that people put out. Really they are even cheaper because you can pick up a 100 spindle of cd r's for around 8 bucks. that's .08 cents each. Then these guys go and sell it for 30.00, now that I would be unhappy about.

There are a lot of fake copies on EBAY. Make sure it is an original before you bid! I got scammed on Videomind last year. They were made with a laser printer and a DVD burner on a home PC! Watch out.

Ebay is supposed to PROHIBIT that kind of crap, but they mosy definitely do NOT enforce it.

I bought the Munsters DVDs during one of my first purchases to ebay, and it turned out to be pirated. Wasn't hard to tell, when I saw the TBS logo in the corner of the screen. Coied off someone's TV set. And then, they only half ass played. Sometimes they wouldn't even play at all. I was P.O.d to say the least. Trying to get my money back was like pulling teeth. The jerk just made excuses and denied it. The big liar.

If anybody wants the name of the seller who ripped me off, I will gladly tell them. Just Pm me.

I'd like to resurrect this topic because I want to start shopping for DVDs off eBay again, but I see a lot of good material going slightly lowball from Asia and I don't trust it. Do I have to look for private sellers selling used copies?

Pirated DVDs often use color laser copies for the sleeve artwork. I doubt that DVD bootleggers use real 4 color printing.

Not necessarily. With gang-run printing now being available and dirt cheap, these could easily be reproduced withe a hi-res scan and printing. Overnight prints, Vistaprint, etc.

I bought a set of Rene Lavand DVD's from some guy in Singapore or something on Ebay a few years ago. All burned copies, it turned out, with scanned and copied artwork. It wasn't even a super cheap price, which is why I thought they were probably real prior to purchase. Everything on Ebay goes through Paypal now, though, so you'll have some recourse if that happens.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Even though ebay may not enforce, can we contact ebay customer service, open a case in the resolution center, then request a refund from the seller? Is the seller required to refund that way? Just curious as I am planning to buy something off of ebay too.

I know that a few years ago (maybe before 2005), pirated CDs/DVDs/VCDs were sold openly in a lot of places in Asia, but that has changed (I don't know about magic DVDs specifically, but for regular movies/CD albums, sellers go to jail for selling pirated copies). So due to stricter law enforcement, that has gotten better. A couple years ago when I visited Asia again, I no longer saw any store selling pirated copies openly.

Had trouble getting money back for something pirated before, it was a rare release of a fan club CD so eBay had no way to prove that it was fake! I had to get a letter printed from the fan club and send it to eBay by a certain date etc, hard work.

With magic DVDs I could see a similar problem, being that they are created by a lot of regular people (not big publishers) these days compared to other items in the mainstream

I try to be careful but take educated risks at times because of a good deal, rarely had any trouble

I generally look for a photo from a real person on eBay, no stock photos and check where they are etc.

Also I check the seller out, previous listings etc, if they aren't there, I wonder why, if they are there I check what they sold, to see if it is multiple copies being sold, which may indicate someone running a print off!

In my country, you can get that 3 dvd set for under $10..... No dvd cover, just a copied dvd from original.... So sad, but its a fact... Just try to buy from autorize seller, buy the original and respect the art.
