“Don’t run when your not being chased.” This is actually a quote from Al Baker.

“Make them think they’ve been fooled by a gentlemen.” I believe this is Leipzig, but maybe it's Thurston, or maybe both men said it.

Good quotes though...several of these could be the start of a topic, or debate. Nice work!

Great list of quotes.

There's one little thing that's bothering me. The man's name is Jean Robert-Houdin. His first name is not Robert.

Sorry, it's a stupid detail I know, but. . .

Glad that everyone likes the quotes. I thought that they great too. That's why I posted them. Mark, I wish that there was a way to edit my post so I could correct Jean Robert-Houdins' name but unfortunately there's no way to do that.

Harry Blackstone, Jr. when performing the floating light bulb became incensed when an audience member swatted the bulb to the floor.
Blackstone shouted at the man, "You dumb son of a b****!"
After Harry calmed down he apologized humbly, "Sir, please forgive me for calling you a dumb son of a b**** , but, you are."

One of the great magicians said something like that but I can not recall who it was. The guy hated magicians?

They are great quotes but I am a bit confused. You wrote that these were quotes by great magicians yet you have quotes from Brad Henderson mixed in there.

When I saw that, the first thing that popped into my head was a song I learned from Sesame Street that goes...

Believe me, I would be the first one to shy away from comparison to the group of peers in which I found myself listed. Just curious though, have we met, or have you seen a performance? Regardless, I too would not have placed myself into that company, nor would I call myself great. (Though I do think the energy quote is something worhty of consideration).

In fact, while the "paint it red" quote is used in my book, I will say that it is an old saying and one I would not claim credit for. The quote of mine of which I am proud is, "Magic is not the manipulation of objects, but the manipulation of people's perceptions."

Finally, I would love to add this one to the list:

Magic is what happens to a person's mind when a mystery is experienced; it is an emotional experience, not an exterior, objective event. - S.H. Sharpe

That was funny. Currently my favorite quote. That and the following:

"We are not actors playing the part of a magician. We are Real Life Magicians, who happen to be doing an Act"
-Garrett Thomas

"It has been argued that people of this day and age do not believe in magic. Nothing could be further from the truth. They only offer resistance to outdated myths, but new ones are constantly assimilated"
-John Carney

“We should never allow presentation to become a casualty of method.”
-Tommy Wonder

“Magic is a performance, and a performance should have an honesty, a relevance and a resonance if it is to be offered to spectators without insulting them.”
- Derren Brown

“When a performance is over, what remains? Fun can be forgotten, but powerful emotion also disappears and good arguments lose their thread. When emotion and argument are harnessed to a wish from the audience to see more clearly into itself - then something in the mind burns”
- From Peter Brooks’s The Empty Space

“Astonishment is not an emotion that’s created. It’s an existing state that’s revealed.”
-Paul Harris

“Magic is not inherently anything. It is what you sell it as.”
-Derren Brown

"But, Why?"
-Garrett Thomas

and one by ME!...

"Play Tetris, succeed at Life"

...but that has nothing to do with magic...
