If I were going to start making my own tricks/illusions what would be the best thing to start with? I could do with something simple to make fist to get me going.

Sword Box, Production box etc.
I would suggest looking at Mark Wilson's Course. He has some basic, yet great effects.

Begin to build your own illusions by Paul Osborn is a great first book, shows you tools and all.
Also, learn to use the tools PROPERLY |

Square circle. Easy to make even without plans to work from.
P.S. I agree whole heartedly about the Paul Osborne book.

I started with gimmicked decks and moved on to regular supplies, like wands and tables. I plan on doing illusions soon. Find a mentor or talk to the guy down the alley with the shop in his garage. They'll get you started the right way. Usually for a case of beer.
