Can anyone fill me in a little on the effect fire alarm? I believe it is a Verne McCarthy trick and have found a place to buy it for about $30.00 but does it really work as well as they say it does? Is the lighting and handling smooth and one handed? What about the claim of swallowing the fire?
Will this turn out to be more hassel to carry and use than it's worth? I don't mind paying at all, I just want to know if it's as magical as they say it is... see Here! Thank's for any guidance

Though I know nothing about Fire Alarm a cheaper version would be Jair Bonair's Fire Bug.
I think Hank Lee's and/or Rabbit in the Hat Ranch sells it. It is not as cool as that one "SOUNDS" but I like the Fire Bug effect and practice is minimal and set up can be done like 12 hrs in advance. Or if you find Fire Bug and like the description of it I can sell you mine if you PM me on it.

Hello Wil Profitt!
First, I must admit that I don't Fire Alarm, but the description of the product gives me a very good idea of how it works (maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure of the method because there is a similar thing in an old book by a French fire magician: Alpha). If this is the thing I think about, I'm pretty sure that it works well but: * The flamme is hot (even with cold fire alcohol the flamme is hot) and touch your skin. But it touch your skin on a small area so if you make the ball roll on your hand, you won't be hurt. * I don't think the ball can ignite by itself, you must light it. * It looks like a ball. I mean that spectators can find this fire ball funny or entertaining but it doesn't seem too "magic" Because that is not "pure" fire but a burning solid ball. * If the method I guessed is good, you can swallow the fire as Fire eaters do. I hope it will help you and I hope that I magician who have fire alarm will help you more. Best Regards,
Il était une fois...

In my opinion (ahem!) There are a lot of cheaper methods than fire alarm to achieve the same effect. If you do fire effects and understand them, it might serve you well, but just for the instructions. To do it at all, you need a fire handler's mind set, and also a venue where you can use it.
BTW, it is not self-igniting. You will need some sort of ingnition source. I was embarrased when I got it, but I handled fire for more than half a century. Slim Price

There is a review of Fire Alarm over on the MagicTalk message board, in the reviews section. It's not too far down on the page.

You can make it yourself with a cotton ball and Rubbing Alcohol. It looks cool, and is very fun to just mess around with, but looks nothing like real magic.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

I agree about not being "magical" but there are acts that could use it. (Mine, for example) I oppose anything that uses alcohol though. You do not need to agree with me, but I've been doing fire effects of one kind or another for more than half a century.
Do a little homework and see why alcohol is very likely to burn you badly. I'm sorry the rules of the house prohibit my telling you the right stuff to use. Poke around my site if you like, just browse Slim Price or Here!

It's likely to burn you if you get it on yourself. Fortunately the cotton balls hold it quite nicely and unless you squeeze it while it's in your hand, you stay pretty much dry (and unharmed).
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
