I'm having a big problem with the 'sound issue' in the move for the key-on-string effect that is so strong when done right. Any pointers?

I'm thinking that you are talking about the Jay Sankee effect, Leaving Home? If so, I hate to tell you this, but it's practice. Here's something that can help though. When performing, the normal key should be not quite in the hollow of the palm and when you perform the move it should be towards the other side of the palm.

It takes practice to get it though. As Sankee says, it helps to wear a ring so that you have an excuse for the talking.

Yes, it is the Sankey effect. The keys do tend to converse, the ring idea is excellent, though. I'll keep working it...

I had the same problem when learning this, the keys would talk for the first 6-8 weeks I practiced this - not always, but often enough that I didn't feel comfortable performing this for anyone. Then it just clicked and now I can do it fairly effortlessly, with no talking. Unlike Rik, I start with the regular key in fingerpalm and finish with it in fingerpalm of the other hand. Timing is perhaps the most critical part here - the regular key being released just before the key on the string. The other tip would be to relax - it takes time, a lot of practice, but once you get it, you will be amazed how easy it becomes. Good luck -

Thanks for the tips - do you mean 'open' finger palm to start ending with closed finger palm on the unattached key?

Yes, that's it. Open to closed, with a VERY slight scooping motion with the right hand to catch the unattached key. Good luck -

The move takes time and with practice it can be achieved. It's hard at first because of the two motions beiong done at the same time but it's all worth it.

This is exactly right. When you start practicing this effect, you will most likely encounter a handful of issues with the third phase of the routine. But, as previously mentioned, the only way to correct these is with practice. With time, you'll begin to understand the timing of your mechanics. Personally, to prevent the keys from 'talking,' I have the detached key on the extreme end of my hand, to the point where half of it is dangling off. I've found that this positioning greatly decreases, if not eliminates, talking. In conjunction with this positioning, I've found that that by throwing the attached the key a split second before catching also helps to eliminate talking.

This is my own two cents. Others will develop their own handling for this phase, I'm sure. Good luck everybody!

W/o giving it away try to keep them in between the fingers so the "talking" doesn't give it away.

I learned this routine thanks to the 'Leaving Home' individual download on Jay's website. I believe the effect was originally only two phases, but this latest download presents the routine as three-phased.

Old string,I know...but I still do this old Sankey trick. :D

I think it's one of his very best closeup effects. I still carry it in my little magic purse and stick it around my neck to do as soon as someone says, "Hey, whats that key for?" It always gets asked and so I still get to do this often enough. It does take some practice to get it working right, but it does come around. Whenever I do it, I just brush up a few times and she's ready to go. :D The move is very deceptive and the little trick always makes people's eyes POP!!! :D I always present it as an old key my grandpa gave me... ;)

Now, I'm not exactly sure of the aforementioned here "3rd phase" of it??? Think it only had 2 phases when I first got it many years ago. *Anybody know of it, please chime in here...Thanks! :)

Anyway, I keep it on me for those moments in-between all the coin magic. Also, I still carry around his Holey Moly too, another really fun closeup trick from the zany & brilliant mind of Jay Sankey. :)

Hey MB; didn't I just see you someplace else?

I didn't purchase the original effect (so no video performance), but I do have it describe in The Definitive Sankey.

1) he starts the effect by allowing the spectator to try to unthread the key w/o untying the string
2) pull the key off
3) put it back on

Not sure that I would call that 3 magical phases, but it is 3 phases to the overall presentation.

Yeah, I guess that might be the few steps to it, but I guess I didn't quite look at the 1st part as a phase. :)

I still doing this old trick, it is so immediately amazing to people. I would wear the key around my neck and it would never fail that someone would ask me about it, and away we would go. :D

But it would be nice to have another phase or two to it. Any ideas folks? :)
