Topic: Where do you want to go as a Mentalist ?
Message: Posted by: RickSilmser (Feb 3, 2005 05:07PM)
Magic and Mentalism to some people is a hobby, to others it's a way to make a living. Personally I've made my living with Mentalism. My questiopn here is...where do you want to go with it ? Are you trying to be the next "Dunninger" or are you just doing Mentalism to add to your yearly income and do it on the week ends ? Do you want to stick to just one venue or do you wish to run the gambit ?

I think it's extreamly important to decide what your main venue is going to be so you can develope your act to suit that venue. My mistake long ago was I really didn't know what venue to do and I was constanly in frustration trying to "find myself" as a performer. I tried every venue one could imagine.

Then I hit the resort/ casino venue, (one just a tad different than the other in my opinion) and saw the audience I was going to deal with. Then I was able to learn the mindset of a resort or casino goer and produced an act that they could relate to.

What do you folks think ? What is your fav. venue ? Do you think you'll stick to it ? Are you still looking ? What do you think is the most important thing to look for in a venue is ?

In my opinion that may be the most valuable advice I've read at The Café this new year. It certainly fits in nicely with what marketing gurus advise about "finding one's niche" in their chosen field. There's a reason why KFC doesn't sell hamburgers and why McDonalds doesn't sell fried chicken.

This is a question I have wondered my self. Where do I want to perform? Whats my market?

Im still young and new to the world of performance, i.e. Ive never been a performer up untill now, if that makes sence?

Is the only advice for someone, like me trying to find there 'niche' to just perform everywhere until you find it?
