Topic: Derren Brown 2005 review
Message: Posted by: RickDangerous (Jul 19, 2005 07:58AM)
Since the shows are over now, could anybody please pm me a really detailed review about the whole show. Since I'm from Germany I don't have the chance to see him.
I would love to hear what effects he performed.
Thank you very much!

He moved his hand through a jug of water.

Incredible stuff.

Ahm... that's not the whole show, but a good start though ;)
pm me, so you don't spoil everything (maybe he'll tour again)

Sorry, a bit of an injoke there...

I would love to review it, but it was several months ago and I have a truly atroscious memory; I do not trust myself to even remember what colour shirt he was wearing.

It was black.

I will offer a signed copy of Derrens Picture for the best summary of the event in Haiku form.

Derren's most recent live show was tremendous. I was luckily enough to bumble bee at every single live performance he has ever been present.

Derren stopped his pulse stop, and jiggling all over as though it were truly affecting his physiology like a madman caught in a fishman's net.

He showed a video trounced with subliminal pictoral melancholy. Audience members were jigaloed into leaving their seats and entering the stage (pulse racing, hands sweating - believe me!).

The whole show was beyond believability. He has surpassed even "Baker Street" in his everything. The man stands outside of culture. There are a few men who have done this. But Derren Brown is the only magician.

Nobody who can type a detailed review?

Ok... guess there's really nobody. Could we then at least discuss his "button-counting"-effect? ;)

I will offer the original undeleted pure effect in a microdot format for the best rhyming couplet homage provided it doesn't use any subliminal advertising.

It's hard to do the Brown review,
Since he took out memories for the noo.

Roki, did you mean an open couplet, or a closed couplet whose sense is relatively independent?

yours aye, the man with the sty.

FYAD is leaking.

I'm sure that Google can help you find a h4rdc0re review of the show, from a Layman's perspective or otherwise. It was a mixture of some classic techniques with a mentalism spin on them, and the more classical stuff he does (bringing someone on stage and having them choose 5/5 the correct PSI-cards, for example).
he used the pulse-stop as a convincer when doing a walking-on-glass effect, in which he was, uh, "cutting off the oxygen to the brain", and it was a trick so dangerous "Channel Four wouldn't let (him) do it" on tele.
But some great stuff in there. Fantastic use of silent script on 1 or 2 occasions, truly excellent. He decided to shove his favourite nail in his nose again, and I remember the lights coming on and seeing a familiar little black toolkit sitting on the table. "Oh, spades." I thought as it was opened, and, yeah. Digusting, but it got a round of applause.

The show is not, strictly speaking, over. It will be touring again next year.

Will Derren be in it?
Message: Posted by: Stephen Long (Jul 21, 2005 06:47PM)
No. The show will be identical apart from the fact that it will be starring me.

Can we start idolising you now or do we have to wait till the show is actually touring .
Is it true the right side of your face has been coated in teflon in preperation for part two of the show or is that just a rumour.??

I refuse to confirm or deny any rumours. You may idolise me as you wish.

Review: Derren Brown’s Something Wicked This Way Comes

2 or 3 magician friends of mine saw it and were disappointed - he overused the same techniques (clipboard). also one thing he does is 'predict' an animal someone says at the start of the show by going off stage to get at the end!!! he's done some great things (the seance TV show), no doubt, but I'm not particularly convinced he's a great performer.

I think he should stick to trying to scare people I think - he does that v well, but his comedy elements are a bit half-assed. Also the zombie thing was really poor I think. Difficult for him because he cant repeat himself and he's done an awful lot...
