I've been asked to perform psychic surgery on stage at a goth club in June.
I've never actually done it before, does anyone have any tips for me?

On the L&L Publishing free DVD, Fielding West perfoms Psychic Surgery. Perhaps you can get some tips by the performance alone. The DVD is free with any purchase.

Any good ideas what I should pull out?
a live worm, a mouth coil?
Message: Posted by: Bill Palmer (Apr 26, 2006 12:03AM)
How real do you want it to look? If you want it to look like psychic surgery, don't pull out a mouth coil.

Why don't you look at some video of "real" psychic surgeons? Even reading Randi's book Flim Flam would give you some ideas.

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the same effect, but I think organs would probably be the best to remove.
First of all, correct me if I'm wrong but my idea of psychic surgery is when witch doctors operate on "tumors" or what not and remove them with their bare hands without actually cutting open the patient?

David Blaine did this to himself on the Carson Daily show with his own heart. Maybe you can use strips of raw meat soaked in blood and pass those off as some internal organ. Maybe pick up animal, cow hearts, intestines, or any animal organs.

If I'm thinking of the completely wrong effect just ignore these but if not hope this helps.

More similar in form and weigh to the humans are the pork ones.

Chicken Liver and chicken Fat- the globs from under the chicken skin- look too good when "produced" form the victim. The liver mushes well and get the fat all bloody....
The curse removing Egg is also a good one to include.
Message: Posted by: M. Perk (Apr 26, 2006 12:07PM)
I think they do use chicken innards.
Message: Posted by: scaress (Apr 26, 2006 07:44PM)
The plan was to pick someone from the audience and tell them they've been placed under a curse. I then offer to remove the curse, just lift up you're shirt and have a friend hold a towel against your lower abdomen.
I touch the belly area with my 'bare' hand and blood drips. Then I pull out something scary one might associate with a curse. Someone suggested Keith Arlen’s creature, but that probably won't work on a stage. Maybe something that appears alive.
My biggest concern is a suddenly squeamish volunteer. I may have to look for a stooge.
I like the curse egg, maybe as an intro.
this was just an idea I've been kicking around until I was asked to do an act for some goth kids. I'll probably be squeezed between a couple of Emo bands that sing about how depressed they are. I really have no idea what to expect.

Worms might be good. Using only one worm might have issues with visibility especially if you're doing a stage show as opposed to a close-up show. Maybe a handful of worms might be cool to see. Maybe a small garter snake that won't bite or that isn't poisonous. I see them used in snake eating tricks all the time. Ask a pet store. Or better yet, take a walk through your pet store. You might find some good ideas for something live to use in the effect.

A large tarantula.

Scaress:

First off, you gotta get a Spirit Spelling Board from Hocus Pocus here at the Café. This effect will absolutely ROCK your audience, ESPECIALLY if you "sense" that the spirits you've "contacted" have been angered by your meddling, and to teach you a lesson they've placed a curse on....someone else participating in The Invocation. You are "guided" to that person, say, by a wad of paper covered in sigils, crumpled, and tossed into the audience. Then go on to your "surgery," (bacon in food colouring works nicely)...and I LOVE that cursed egg bit. End with the Board, and don't forget some mojo bags and crystals for your BOR sales afterward.

Why, yes! As a matter of fact I do build the Spirit Spelling Boards...but that doesn't mean my biased endorsement is untrue ;)

Flim Flam by James Randi is a good reference. A few years ago there was a television special (on nbc I think) where they gave instructions to the stunt, I think it was called "unmasked: the secrets of desception" or something like that. I have been writing a book on horror magic and have a section on psychic surgery, if I can trust you to keep it to yourself, I'll send you the section. Just PM me for it. Good luck

The "real" psychic surgeons are not all that clever or sophisticated. They are performing primarily for uneducated, gullible people. The "real" psychic surgeons are likely to have numerous towels surrounding the patient, bowls of water, trays for the tissue removed from the patient, etc. My point is that they could hide an elephant in the mess that surrounds the operating table.

You may want to streamline this, rather than going for accuracy. I would recommend using a stooge or at least someone from the audience who is aware of what will happen. Obviously, using a male subject for the patient would avoid several problems as you probe the patient's stomach and remove the patient's clothing.

I think I will have to go the comedy route this time. NOW the plan is to use a circular saw that sprays blood all over the audiance, then pulling some Fruit-by-the-foot(TM) out of the volunteer's belly and eating it.
I wanted to be serious, but I'm afraid that a club full of drunk goth kids may not have the attention span to appreciate something that's not loud and messy.

any thoughts?

Scaress...You are talking about my largest demographic...Drunk Goth Kids.
You might be surprised just how good their attention span is.
And how ruthless their criticism is.
With the right music, dress and presentation, a serious act will have a much greater impact than you think (Especially with a true Goth crowd), and they will watch.
Look at a typical list of "Goth" movies. Long, artsy, twisted...Things that take real attention. The most praise I got for a performance in a goth club was probably the simplest one I did. 15 minutes of presentation...Nonverbal presentation, just music and action. One trick- I drove a 12' spike into the top of a covered girls head. Everything else was just lead up to that. They sat in complete silence for the whole thing. There was a strong plot being conveyed, and they really got into that.
Afterwards they would not stop talking about it. I did shows weekly for this club for about a year, and this one got the best reaction of them all. No shouting and cheering during the act, and even after, they were subdued. But everyone in the club, one at a time throughout the rest of the night came up to tell me this was the best show that we had ever done there.
I am not saying that the circular saw is not good...It is, and they will love it! Just saying that they can take a good serious act as well.
Never underestimate the Goth Kids.

Gwyd, glad to hear from an expert. also glad you think my power saw will go over well.

tell you what, if this up-coming gig goes well I'll try to go back with something more serious. I'll shoot for artsy. maybe a real psychic surgery.

thanks again.

I think Andrew Mayne's Gut Buster method can be a mode of having that chicken innards or a ball of live snakes in your hand thru gut!

This situation reminds me of Tony Andruzzi's final Invocational in Chicago. Tony was dressed in the robes of the priest of some esoteric secret society. At the end of the opening show, a young woman was dragged to the front of the room (stage). She was shackled with a metal frame around her neck. Tony stabbed her through her neck, causing blood to gush from her mouth. It was very effective.

Of course, it was the Sword Through Neck from Europe (Italy???). Originally, it sold for over $1000 as I recall.

I start my psychic surgery routine with the old Indian egg trick using the silk to egg effect but with black silks and such. The effect is so much stronger doing it this way, for me anyway.

I did a psychic surgery routine as part of a hallowen show at a goth/alternative club. I discovered a great way to make a TT completely invisible... surgical gloves, and the thumb from another glove on the TT. that had a some bloody stringy hairy stuff in it that I pulled out first, used that as cover/misdirection to steal a latex/tissue paper covered sponge heart (i made it myself) from a holder on the back of the subject's chair. the holder kept the heart compressed and orientated the right way. I palmed it and placed my hand back on his solar plexus. when the heart expanded as I tugged it out with my other hand it looked too big to have been hidden in my hand. here's a pic

I fyou are going to do the innards route and indulge in a snack, might I suggest the Mock intestines recipie, dried fruit bits on a string- you do that part, wrapped in Phyllo dough layer, gently buttered and backed, then a dip in honey, or more butter, ymmy, and looks like intestines! do not eat the string! youc an floss with it afterwards and let them think it is the intestine skin!

Unfortunately Criss Angel just did a psychic surgery exposure last night, very poorly I might add. I think Doug Higley would create something wonderful to pull out of a subject. Easily rolled up in a towel to clean up the blood.
