I was wondering what everyone's preference was regarding the back design of cards used for packet tricks. This would be the type of trick that doesn't use normal Ace-King. The card faces would be graphics. Do you still prefer bikes or is a custom(non-bicycle) back design ok?

I think, in this case, a Bicycle back is, uh... , dumb. They're not playing cards. For something like ESP cards or Color Monte, I think all a Bike back does is alert the audience to the fact that your REGULAR playing cards could be fakes, too. Until they see an obvious fake, it never seems to occur to them that a card with a Bike back could be anything but a regular playing card.

Definitely custom backs for these.

I concur. If the cards are "different", the backs should be different also. If the faces are "normal" (eg. NFW, 3 card monte) I'd use regular Bikes.

I also don't use the holder if I'm using "normal" bikes. Just cull them out of a normal deck. I think bringing cards out of a packet wallet screams different than usual.

Yes, I'd go along with what's been said above. That is, unless there's actually a reason for having "normal backs" ie bikes?

I read a lot of posts where people talk about specs getting suspicious of other cards and how Bike backs are less suspicious. I don't know. A lot of lay people I perform for don't know Bikes from anything. For all they know, Bikes could be trick cards. Have you ever gone to someone's house and seen the types of cards they have? A lot of people have airline cards or cheap-o brands that they pull out to play solitaire.

I use Bikes because I like the feel of them. But I doubt most spectators would think differently of different types of cards.

Just an observation.

That being said, I don't know that I'd even use cards with different graphics on them unless they were ESP cards. I don't like my faces to look to gimmicky.

In his Svengali pitch DVD Don Driver says that folks don't know Bicycle cards from a hole in the ground.

The back design, a packet trick wallet or your hip pocket, they don't care where they come from either.

I'm not saying you won't perform one day for a poker player or another magician who won't notice, but 98% of the folks you'll perform for don't know and couldn't care less.

I always try, but not always with success, to stop visualizing what the trick would look like to another magican, and to start thinking about what it would look like to somebody who knows absolutely nothing about cards or magic.

I've concluded that to many of these folks it's the cards with puppies and mountain scenes on them that are normal, and it's Bicycles that are the kind of cards they've seen Copperfield/Blaine/Angel use on TV.
