Topic: Amazing effect with Euros bills.
Message: Posted by: Paolo Venturini (Jan 31, 2007 12:43PM)
Hi everybody,

I'm looking to know this trick and I need some help (specially from european people).

The effect is... Asking to borrow any euros courrency and adding the serial number, the magi is able to devine the final number.

Ex. A 20 Euro bill could be: S06201338236 = 34 3 + 4 = 7 This is the number!!

Thanks from "thoughtsexplorer" I know this:

Every euro bill (5. 10, 20, 50 and 100) have one letter on the serial number, and this letter is the same for each bill (as above), and every european country have one for his own.

Belgium Z, Greece Y, Germany X, Spain V, France U, Ireland T, Italy S, Austria N, Netherlands P, Portugal M, Finnland L, Luxemburg (no special letter because they get their notes printed in other countries and have their letter then).

Now, the serial number I've wrote before is from Italy (S) and the result from each bill (all the bills) is the same 7, so for Italy I'm done!

For France (U) is 5, Spain (V) is 13... But I don't know yet the other country, that's why I need help from you, please.

Also I think it will be a good trick for everybody, right?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Paolo,

I found the checksums on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_banknotes#Serial_Number

Z Belgium 9
Y Greece 1
X Germany 2
(W) (Denmark)(3)
V Spain 4
U France 5
T Ireland 6
S Italy 7
(R) (Luxembourg)(8)
(Q) Not Used
P Netherlands 1
(O) Not Used
N Austria 3
M Portugal 4
L Finland 5
(K) (Sweden)(6)
(J) (United Kingdom)(7)

Have fun!

Best,
Josef

Ex. A 20 Euro bill could be: S06201338236 = 34 3 + 4 = 7 This is the number!!

I did the same for german euro bills, and I had as a result 11 on each bill.

According to the list above 11 should then be added 1 + 1 = 2!

I think they made all the bills like this for magicians to use ;)

I wonder how well known this is? I'm assuming this is a device for detecting counterfiets, in which case you may find that every merchant and banker in Europe may be aware of it.
If it really isn't widely known, it's a pretty exciting thing to find out about.
I seem to remember something similar with US bills involving a "Check Letter" that appears on the bill, and a checksum calculation with the serial number. I read about it in a "Rick Brant Science Adventure" back in the 1950s, but I don't remember the calculation used, or even which letter on the bill is the "Check Letter".

Thanks Josef, you've saved me lots of time!!

DStachowiak, I've asked it to a couple friends of mine (one was a banker) and they wasn't aware about it... I believe could be an amazing effect!!

Thanks everybody!
