It looks like it's set to premier at the Cannes Film Festival in France this month.

The original cast had Tom Cruise in the lead and was supposed to be directed by Ang Lee. That would have been different!!

The director, Gillian Armstrong, has a good eye for period films, so I expect the film will have a nice visual style...at least.

I think this film was originally called "Smoke & Mirrors" and was in the works about
3 years ago with a first draft, long before The Illusionist or The Prestige hit pre-prod.

Also, it was originally Michael Douglas to play Houdini and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Beatrice.

I remember when they were interviewed on The View talking about it...

...eh.

Hello, Flying Magus.

I actually got my info first hand from Ang Lee. I had a small part in Brokeback Mountain. [I was the straight guy. Ha! Ha!]
We were sitting around between shoots, and I was doing a couple of tricks. One thing led to another, and we got talking about the Houdini movie. Ang Lee took my card, but he went on to other larger, greener projects (The Hulk).

The script for Smoke and Mirrors actually sold about 10 years ago. Sean Connery was going to be in it at the time.

I'd like to see Johnny Depp as Houdini. Okay, he's a little scrawny, but he could be [i]really[/i] intense and, well...weird!
