Topic: Review: Dan Payes figure
Message: Posted by: Wanlu (Jul 17, 2007 06:08AM)
Hi everyone,

My Dan Payes Figure arrived yesterday. The figure looks great!!!

The body seemed like it needs more stuffings on the arms and legs but other than that...the figure is Great!

The character of the Payes Old man is very strong :) I plan to try him out this Thursday at an Adult show :)

He will also perform in our dual vent act with Ony Carcamo this month...produced by the Manila Enforcer, Rannie Raymundo.

Thanks

Here's Don Dom in his first ever gig :) good start for him because he got paid flirting with the girls in his debut performance :)

Quite a strong character for adult shows...BUT it would have been nicer, if the arms and legs were properly stuffed.

I can't believe the amount of figures you have Wanlu!! Do you buy a new one for every show? How do you come up with new routines for all of them?

The facial expression on this one is great. I like him a lot.

Wanlu,

How about switch Don Dom's body with other figures body, only for stage performing.
Or make another body for him, if you don't want to change the original.

Wanlu:

I am very impressed that you can put a new figure into your show within days of receiving him. It takes me months to write and practice a new routine for the figure I've had for nearly 40 years. I just received a new Selberg figure (Granny), and I don't think I'll perform her in public for several months. I have to perfect her voice, create her back story, develop her personality, and write and practice the routine. This is especially hard since her controls are different from my original figure.

At any rate, good for you! I hope you'll post some video for us to see.

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi everyone,

Thanks Budi for the suggestion. That's exactly what I was planning to do but I noticed it was quite difficult to change the clothes...so my wife did her own magic and stuffed more cotton stuffings in the legs of the Payes and it worked well. She had to open up an old stuffed doll and used the stuffing of the doll foe the legs of the Payes :)

Thanks Kimmo..Im quite new in Ventriloquism and I have to confess that getting new figures is quite exciting :) I use the Selberg and the Axtells as well as my old man figure from Ony Carcamo for my Kidshows :) The new Payes figure is exclusively for my adult shows :) I also have a Poyner which Im hoping I can sell soon...its been used only a few times. If I cant sell it soon, Implanning to turn it into a Gay character which is jsut perfect for the type of comedy bars that we have in Manila which is basically dominated by Gay stand up comedians :)

Hi Bob...Ive been practicing a script even when the Payes figure was still being made by Dan... his chracter is different from the Old Man figure that I use for my kidshows but they have a similar voice and they share a basic script...with the exemption of the adult materilas used by the Payes figure :)

Last Monday night...I went to a local comedy bar and offered to show my act for free since I really want to practise my new material in front of a real audience...Thank God it went well :) in fact the ownwer liked it and asked me to perform again tonight :) how can they not like it? IT'S FOR FREE :)

I just want to try out the new matertial in front of a real audience but for free ala open mic... before I do it tomorrow night in front of a paying audience :) The result was beneficial because I took out some lines that bombed last Monday night...

Im trying out the new material tonight :)

Thanks everyone :)

Thanks Bob :)

The show went great!!! Thank God

Ony Carcamo killed the crowd with his own hand carved figure Mr Parley and his Hartz figure Lola Belay. Ony's routine with the Vent tricks were simply remarkable...

Rannie Raymundo joined the Improv part of the show and it was a blast :) He's a crowd pleaser and his personality as a performer is simply put- Charming.

As for me, The vent masks were okay even for a lousy script :)

The Payes figure did great :) The crowd reacted very well with the figure's facial features :) This figure is for keeps :)

Thanks again :)

Must be difficult to teach a new California figure Tagalog! My Payes has enough trouble with English...I finally just let him keep his mouth shut and 'think' his lines and I repeat them. Easier that way. :)

Congratulations on your new DP figure...it looks great! Sounded like the girls liked him!

If you are 'Straight' and work with a 'Gay' figure the possibilites are wide open for huge laffs. Have fun!

Thanks Doug...I tried the gay figure and it worked out real well.

I used my Poyner as a gay character and he did well...

Thanks again,

Hi ,I am an amateur vent in Missouri. I have four figures and my Payes figure is my favorite. I kind of like the not so full legs. They stay in place a little better for me.I too am amazed at Wanlu's number of figures . Seems like he always has a new one and a few good things for sale on ebay.
Message: Posted by: Wanlu (Feb 21, 2008 09:04PM)
Not amazing at all my friend :)

I have a few Axtells (Orangutan, Cockatoo, Turtle, Seal, Big Baby, Cry Baby, Storyteller) and a MAT Duck...all I use for my kidshows depending on the party theme e.g. Safari/Zoo, Barn/Farm, Sea/Ocean...plus a Poyner and that's it :)

The Payes and a local figure I use for my adult shows...which I seldom have so I was planning to sell the Payes :)

If you think I have lots...check out Steve Petra :) and Kimmo :)

Thanks :)

Okay...tell me Im wrong...

...I figured I'll sell the Payes since I seldom do adult shows and if I do get an adult gig, the Axtell Storyteller can work the Payes' old man routine.

...and use the money to add to my funds for a Hands Free Orangutan... :) :) :)

In the future...when I buy a hands free Orangutan...Ill send my vinyl orangutan to a new young vent for FREE :)

This figure is now for sale at the Trade topic for vents or you can PM me for rates...

You are getting a great figure...the only reason Im selling it is because I only use him for my adult shows and I seldom do adult gigs...

Yup...I guess when you are new in the business you simply want everything...but as you go you realize you only need a few :)

I realized I only need my Axtells and my Poyner for my kidshows...

and my Hartz (currently in the process) and a Rael for my adult shows :)

Update:

I sold my first Payes figure...Don Dominador. (Dom I) I sold him because I figured a seldom do adult shows :)

Then late last year, I had several clients requesting for him...so I asked Dan Payes to make a Dom II for me and he did. Then a crazy idea got to my head...so I sold Dom II for a lower price and bought myself a Dom III from Dan but with added animations. :)

So now I have Dom III and I'm quite happy with it...at least for now :)

Dan Payes makes fine looking figures...his customer service is fantastic.

Highly recomended :)

Alright, this is not precisely true :) Now I have a Mack and a couple of Hartz, plus a Nelson-Jackson...of course my Payes, my Axtells and my Poyner.

I am however selling some of these figures...PM me if you need anything :)

Wanlu this character is certainly a popular one because you use him, Dave Malmberg uses him, and John Pizzi uses him too. You are in great company with those fellows!!

Wanlu I had heard through the ventriloquist grape vine that you had purchased the Nelson/Jackson Mr Horowitz. He is a great character. Too bad Bill Nelson never got the just rewards for developing that character.

Regarding Dan Payes figures...

I was watching his Blue Haired old lady on ebay this week, but when it jumped above $700, I backed out of the scene..Exit Stage Left,as Snagglepuss would put it...

I had a routine in mind of doing "The Dating Game", with me being Jim Lange, saying stuff like "and heeeeeere we go"...all while playing some of that cool Herb Alpert stuff as my background music....then having my main Guyll guy as the eligible bachelor, saying stuff like "I'm attracted to the Angelina Jolie type", with his back turned to her so he couldn't see her while he flirted with her.....then being introduced to his dream date, the blue haired old lady....although I suppose Dating Game stuff would be lost on anyone under the age of 40 or so...... ; )

This Payes character is really cool :) Dom III now has self centering eyes, raising brows and wiggling ears. :)

I'll post a video soon...Don Dominador is part of a big concert here in Manila tomorrow night. It will be at the Araneta Coliseum, the biggest venue in Manila :) It was where Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier in a boxing match dubbed as "Thrilla in Manila." :)

Here it is...but the video was taken at a bad angle and of course the language barrier...I'm so sorry.

The organizers gave me 10 minutes only...the show was for the benefit of our local tv and radio broadcasters who were killed...

I can only dream that someday I can do a full vent act at the Araneta Coliseum and call the show..."Venthrilla in Manila." :) Maybe do an Ali vs Frazier bit with two puppets :)

Thanks :)

Wanlu great job and you looked very comfortable on stage in front of a huge colliseum filled with people. I think your lip contral was great and the animation of Dom was also very fine. Just work on developing a different voice for him. His voice and your voice are the same. But still great job and Dom's a great character.

I used my new Dan Payes figure tonight, It was a tough crowd as they were sat the other side of the dance floor but he was fun to use. I'm useing him again on Thursday at a magic club!
I also used one of Wanlu's masks on a 21 year old man. All his friends were in stitches, I'm sure it'll end up on you tube. I'll keep you posted.

Dan makes wonderful figures with great expressions at a very reasonable price. I purchased my figure on eBay, It was damaged in shipping, I called Dan and he treated me like I was his only customer; He has great skills in making sure the owners of his figures are happy. I am very happy with the way my figure works and looks.

I plan to order an additional Dan Payes figure when my routine matures to include multiple figures

So, I've been contemplating ordering a Payes figure- I love his aesthetic, his creativity, and his design- and I was wondering if the gentleman on the forum could help me answer a few questions.

1. How durable are the figures?

2. Are they stuffed well?

3. Do the controls work smoothly? Are they easy to operate?

4. How satisfied are you with these figures compared to others that you own?

I've been interested in purchasing an "Andrew" model off of his website- it is the only one of his I can find that's 495.00 and has moving eyes in addition to moving mouth, so it is the one that has the most appeal to me. I've tried to jump on the sales of some used figures made by him, but I always get beaten to the punch- which I guess says more about the quality of his figures than anything!

I have the old man that I bought from Wanlu and I would totaly recommend Dan's figures. My only complaint is where the elbow joint is but that is so easily rectified. Go for it, I doubt if there is a better value for money figure out there!
