Topic: The Magic Café: Best Book of 2007 Awards
Message: Posted by: Christopher Williams (Aug 14, 2007 03:28PM)
Ok guys, now for the famous 'Magic Café best book of 2007'. Again this year will be run by myself and Peo Olsson, strict rules apply this year. Last years winner was Mike Power's 'Power Plays'. Good luck to this years book entries, we will include a list of all the books released this year, if any are added, I will add them to this post. Be careful with your votes...no changing your mind 10 times like some did last year! Any questions, PM me. So...here are the rules...

1. Only members of the Café may vote.
2. You have only one vote to use.
3. Once you have used your vote, you can't change your mind. Use your vote carefully.
4. A list of books to choose from will be used. The list will change as long new books arrive during the year.
5. No E-books or reprints can be voted for.
6. You can only vote for ONE book.
7. A member of the Café, who also is an author of a book, may also vote, but not on his own book(s).
8. The votings will start October the 1st and end December 31th (three months).

And here are the entrants:

Magicsanta, we tried to compile a list of all the books we knew had come out this year, we know we might have missed one or two, and state in the first post to let us know and we will add. As for 'Thought of Cards Across', I agree with you, and I don't expect it to get one vote. That was a book a couple people came to me and said they really enjoyed and why wasn't it on the list, so it was added. I don't myself, even as the author, consider it a book worthy of its place amongst the books named around it

So, I guess the only prudent thing to do is to not vote until 11:59 PM on December 31st.

A wise and prudent decision, Peo.

BTW, will long awaited 2007 reprints of OOP books be eligible for "Best Book" consideration? Will it matter how long any such book has been OOP? Also, are people able to submit (or suggest) their own candidate(s) for inclusion on the list?

Mike

Can we vote for a reprint??? All I am saying is 31st Oct Hermentic press
Message: Posted by: Christopher Williams (Oct 4, 2007 07:13AM)
I don't believe a re-print is fair to go against the books listed. Re-prints are books which are high enough in demand to warrant a re-print, so are obviously going to be popular. I feel they would have an unfair advantage...anyone else agree? Or is it just me?
Message: Posted by: todsky (Oct 4, 2007 07:15AM)
A reprint isn't a new book, as far as content goes, so it shouldn't be counted among the best of 2007.

With all due respect I respectfully suggest that the decision to bar reprints from the competition might not have been thoroughly thought through.

I understand the rationale for not wishing to allow the reprints into the competition. That said, I think it is a sad but interesting commentary that the reprints (some of which were published and haven't seen the light of day for 20-25 years) are not to be considered because they are automatically perceived of potentially too high a quality and to have an unfair advantage over the left-overs (i.e., the remnants and remainder, or, what, by default would then be deemed the cutting edge materials of "today").

By such disqualification, are the nay-sayers suggesting that the standards of today are lower than they were 15-25 years ago? Are they seriously suggesting that the quality quotient be rigged so that a book that might be of percieved higher quality not be allowed in the competition so that a potentially lesser quality book have a "fighting chance" to win based upon a watered down quality standard? If so, perhaps the "winner" should have an asterisk placed next to its name.

Can you imagine the outcry if this standard was applied to Olympic competition or NASCAR racing competition--or some other meaningful competition? "Sorry, you won last year and are ineligible for this year's competition because you might be too strong and win again--thereby depriving some lesser talent of a chance for a pyrrhic victory."

Had Max Maven's "Prism" been published in 2007 would it have suffered this same fate because the 5 individual books had been published back about 25 years prior? Would "Practical Mental Effects" have suffered this same fate because it was a compilation of the best of the Jinx (which had been published in the 1930s?)

I dunno. But if a book gets beat out by a reprint that was never ever even in any such competition when origiinally released and the "new" book cannot beat out the reprint for quality, content and impact, perhaps being the best of a diluted talent pool is an empty win at best.

Just, IMHO.

Mike

P.S. And, fortunately, this "Best Book of 2007 Awards" list notwithstanding, Café members can still post a competition that makes a valid comparison between the diluted talent pool and the quality reprints and they can still offer an opinion as to which is the better value and of higher quality so that people seriously interested in making the best buying decisions for their hard-earned money will have an opportunity to make such valid comparisons. So, I guess, "no harm, no foul."

Vote for what MagicSanta?....

As for the reprint issue Turk...i think you were missing my point. First off, this is the award for best release of 2007, not best re-release.

My point earlier, and it was not the offical rule, was just my opinion, but the material that comes out is new. People are hesitant of new, they wait for reviews, to see if they are worth picking up.

However, re-prints are long awaited and highly sought after. I only heard of Session about a month or so before it came out, and people may not know about it or read about it. However, a book which already has a reputation in the Magic world has an advantage. There are years worth of reviews and comments about the books, whereas new books come into the world cold, and have a tough job to make it to where the highly sought after re-prints are.
Reprints are very popular, hence they went out of print, so people rush to get them to make sure they get them this time round. New books released this year, people know they are going to be readily available.

Again, that is just my opinion, NOT an offical remark. However, lets please try and leave this thread for votes

Pity ebooks are not included. Switchcraft deserves some praise too.

Are e-books not included?

Does the Reprint of Mike Powers' TOP SECRET STUFF count on this list also???
Message: Posted by: Christopher Williams (Oct 8, 2007 04:47PM)
No e-Books are not included, as the list is for new published books of 2007. The book section has its own 'section' on the Café, as does the eBooks, therefore they are classed as different. And unfortunately Salby, no re-prints will count

before even reading a trick, I thought the layout of the pictures was the best of any magic book I'd ever seen.....

Then tricks like Laser Aces and the psuedo-memorized deck are worth the price of the book!!!!!

Mark, I think any new books suggested could be added to the list. Am I right Christopher? Peo?
Also, I don't think it's necessary to update the list every couple of posts!
Message: Posted by: Hansen (Oct 15, 2007 11:26PM)
What happens if you haven't read every book on the list?

Won't people just vote for the only one they've purchased, or their favourite one from a few purchases?

Session gets my vote as well. What a great read.
Message: Posted by: Christopher Williams (Oct 16, 2007 03:44AM)
Todsky, yes new books have been added, like 'Devil of a Bar and Pub' has been added. Please remember it was a decision myself and Peo took on to do this again this year, so it was just us two remembering what books came out, so as in the first post of this thread stated, just let me know if there is one we have missed you want to see added. As long as it was published this year, is Magic related, and not a re-print, then it will be added for voting. As for updating it, we like to keep on top of it and keep the list as up to date as possible.

Hansen, if you haven't read every book, then you obviously can't vote for every book. If you only bought one book, and you think it is the best read you have had this year and worthy of getting the book of 2007, then by all means vote for it.

I have only 9 of the books listed above, not including my own, because I buy the books I know I will be interested in at this time. So therfore, I disqualify myself from the other books, however, I wouldn't vote for a book I am not currently interested in anyway. So that cancels that out. So, out of the books I have, I vote which one I enjoyed most. Now, others will get books I don't have, as there are already votes for books I don't have, therefore they have a chance to vote for those books, thus making teh votign equal. I am a Close up Magician, so buy books on either Close up Magic, or books that I think would interest me. I wouldn't buy a book on Kids Magic or something, so therefore I wouldn't vote for it even if I bought it, as it is of no use to me...i hope this is making some sense...

Both Josh and Joel come on here, but it isn't very often. It really is one of the best books to come out not only this year, but for the last few years. A very unusual, but clever way of writing a book that makes you have to read it and find it very hard to put it down
Message: Posted by: mrehula (Oct 17, 2007 07:52AM)
I probably shouldn't be voting, since I have only three books on the list. I know that everyone else has all of the books and is making a sober decision based on an analysis of all the books under consideration. Right? Otherwise this would just be a popularity contest, based more on sales than quality, and that would be pointless!

My vote: Magicians Cookbook Ltd

Session is a fun read and Behr's book is a great achievement, but I'm using tricks from the Cookbook. Best of Friends is next on my 'to buy' list, but it's rather pricey for me now.

The only book of all these that I've read is 'Card Dupery' by J.K. Hartman. So my vote goes to him. My book, 'Impossabilities' has sold 45 copies and to non-relatives (LOL) which isn't bad for an unannounced publication. Just thought I'd toss that in as well.

Shakey/Caliban: Hey guys, finally - people who know the good stuff!! I wonder if your votes have been recorded. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.
Message: Posted by: Vlad_77 (Nov 3, 2007 12:17PM)
Mr. Lorayne: I also voted for Best of Friends vol. III quite awhile ago. I know that my vote was recorded. Each to her/his own of course, but while the list of books is quite impressive I felt that your book was the best buy I have made in a LONG time. J.K. Hartman's Card Dupery is a book on this list that seems to have been overlooked on the Café. It's a shame in one respect because it really is a good book with some wonderful and practical work.

In the end, for those of us who have read or are reading Best Friends III, we have at our disposal a true classic in every sense of the word. I want you to make money of course, but I also want this book to remain a secret lol!!

Once again, a tip of the proverbial hat for another great work. I am a unabashed fan as I have told you in numerous posts. Your column in Genii has allowed me to revisit some great material in your other works.

One last note, thanks for the Relativity Color Change! I followed your suggestion for using it in the Joe Rindfleisch Stanley Collins ace effect - sorry I cannot remember the name right now - in Apocalypse. It works like a charm. When I first learned this routine I had great difficulty doing the Side Steal on the third vanish. It felt very awkward doing this from a small packet. The Relativity Change made all the difference.

Best,

Vlad

While I have not read most of the books in contention, I nevertheless vote for Magicians Cookbook Ltd by Andi Gladwin and Jack Parker based on the diverse and exceptionally high quality of practical card magic. It’s also particularly well written. Profit going to a good cause is the icing on the cake.

I brought this up last year when the voting began, what, in June or something? It's still absurd to vote for best book of 2007 when there are months and many worthy books still being published. I also find it absurd that anyone would value an opinion that's based on having read only a (I'm guessing small) percentage of the books on the list offered here (which is rather incomplete!) Of those voting, how many people have read ALL the books, making an informed decision?

Of course, the results are what they are. But I'd be more interested in 'best of' lists from reviewers from Genii and Magic Magazines. Then there'd be a more informed decision making process. Genii has started a list of 'bestsellers', so why not develop a traditional list, such as 'five books you must own from 2007'. THAT I'd be interested in.

Guys, the 'rules' as it were are there for you to see before voting. You can't change votes. If you don't want to vote til the end of the year...don't, that shouldn't be a problem though, but there are those that will and have voted already. It isn't like this is hugely offical or anything, but more of an intersting curiosity of who likes what. Now, for some, they can only afford one or two books, so they vote for the one they liked best this year. If it was for a huge statue or medal or something, I would understand what people are trying to say, but it is just a bit of fun to be honest. People like myself have about 85% of the books on that list, and I still think that if anything came out, I still wouldn't change my mind. But, that is me. Everyone is different and entitled to an opinion, so vote when you want to, and vote what you want for, but remember, you get one vote.

Many great books on the list and it was tough deciding between Session, WD40, Handcrafted Card Magic, BOF III, and Devil of a Bar & Pub. Ultimately, I am casting my vote for Bruce Cervon's Castle Notebooks (volume 1), based on its historical significance and the depth of material it contains. I must say, however, that many of the books named on the list are deserving of the title. I can name more than a handful of e-books that were released in 2007, as well, that deserve equal recognition.

90% of the list already has a place on the shelves of my library. Here's to hoping that I can complete the collection sometime in 2008.

Happy New Year, everyone!!

Congratulations to Joel Givens for his fabulously clever material. Stiff competition all around. 2007 was witness to some truly exceptional offerings, much of which wasn't even mentioned on this thread.

The business of books is very much alive and I, for one, am very thankful for that fact.

Thanks, guys, for your kind words and your votes. I hope you all enjoyed the book, and more
importantly, I hope everyone was able to find some things of use. Josh and I both worked
really hard on this, and this award was a very pleasant surprise.

Thanks everyone!

Wow! Thanks everybody! There were so many great books this year—I’m honored that anyone would count ours among them.

As I’ve said once before, our goal was to write a DIFFERENT kind of magic book, and we had specific, new goals of what we wanted to achieve. From the start, I knew some readers and critics wouldn’t like or understand the choices in format. But I also hoped that others would “get it,” and I feel both gratified and vindicated by this thread.

Joel’s material is, I think, fantastic, but a lot of it is also specific to certain venues or situations. I knew the format had to frame this material in a way that would help the reader understand the trick IN CONTEXT. I won’t bore you with more details on the format, but for the curious, I wrote an essay on this on my website, http://www.joshuajay.com/merchandise.html that details the process of Session.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Now back to work on the “new” project. Happy New Year.

Josh

My vote goes to Devil of a Bar and Pub a very entertaining book.

Hi Peo,

It's a book (maybe two volumes) on the close-up and stand-up material of Rune Klan. As you know so well (being his neighbor), Rune is an extremely talented, successful magician almost unknown to the magic world. I hope to change that!

Got to say that in Talk about Tricks, I found Rune and his material the most constantly entertaining. Great Stuff
