Just a brief note to say that my copy (6/50) leather bound, signed by the author (thanks, Larry) and various props arrived, and I must say this is one of the most wonderful books I've purchased. Leather bound, first edition, too....

Original material, great routines (including scripts), wonderful ideas on how to make your own props (will keep me busy over the winter months), and some magical coin effects.

The Backhand Coin Change (bonus) and Xanthomorphic Coins are beautifully illustrated - crystal clear descriptions and excellent photographs.

Along with 21st Century Coin Mechanics, I'd recommend these two books very highly to anyone interested in fully developed routines (not just quick tricks - you need to put in a bit of practise, but it's well worth that little bit of effort).

As with "Coins from Vegas", Larry's scripting makes these effects come alive.

I wish you the best of success, Larry, and thanks for all the effort in bringing this to the market.

Looking forward to a good Review, Kyf.

Gary, if you get the chance to purchase this, it's a wonderful book.

Card effects, ring/string, coins, haunted boxes - each beautifully described. The DVD is excellent, and the photographs crystal clear....

PS: I'm NOT connected to Larry in any way.

PPS: Larry, should I negotiate commission on referrals....? (joke)

Gary, I agree with Kyf 100%. I started a thread reviewing this wonderful book in the book review section of the Café. Check it out at:

How does this one compare to his last book?

And Larry, I want to hear from others on this.

Thanks you guys,

I have both books. Both are excellent. One is a specialty type book, and the other a more general book on magic.

21st Century Coin Mechanics is divided into sleights (mechanics) and routines (applied mechanics). This book is all coins except one (the exception uses bills). Original sleights including the URV and the Flying Changeover Palm are taught, and many applications are found in the routines section. IMO, those two moves alone are worth the price of the book. The CD shows the sleights performed, but not explained. The book does a good job explaining the moves with stop action type photos. Complete scripts are included.

Kingdom of the Red is a larger book with more variety. Lots of magic with cards, but also coins, rings, ropes, original apparatus, card spinning, mentalism, etc. Tons of photos. Like the coin book, everything is well explained with detailed patter. I reviewed part of the book in the book review section, so you can check that for more info. The DVD contains some complete performances and a lot of explanations in detail with multiple angles shot. I think this book will appeal to more magicians because it's not geared just to coin magicians like the first book. There are easy effects and harder ones, a good mixture. The quality of printing in both books is excellent, but Kingdom of the Red is the better of the two overall. I prefer books to DVDs, but here you get both and a lot of value. Or, you could spend a lot more cash on the latest gizmo or coin gaff that will satisfy a craving but not stimulate your mind. I recommend both books highly, but if you were to just get one I'd go with Kingdom of the Red because the average magician will find more choice in quality material.

Kyf, great review of this. If it's anything close to his first book, it's got to be good. 21st Century Coin Mechanics was exceptional and a real treatise on magic from a real magician and all-around great guy. I'm sure Kingdom of the Red is even better. Larry is an interesting writer, and with his wonderful wife, who I believe shoots all the pics, they are some tag-team in producing quality work. I look forward to getting this new book as "The Good Doctor" here puts a tremendous amount of work into his passion, makes it affordable, and gives you a lot of good value as Kyf most illustratively spoke to. His first book sits with all my other great books as an expert reference on magic. Oh, and Larry always gives you quite a bit more for your buck. ;) He's always available here, puts bonuses in his mailings, and usually packs with a DVD of presentations. It's a complete package of magic for you with great routines, moves, sleights, and good will from a great guy. :) -Mb

I purchased Kingdom of the Red in its leather bound glory. What a nice book to hold in your hands. The text is clear, and the photos are well shot and plentiful.

One thing I particularly like is the structural layout of each chapter. The effect is stated clearly and simply. The skills needed are listed. The props are listed. There is a clear explanation, then a discussion section, and finally a step by step synopsis. Additionally, some of the chapters have a video example on the included DVD.

I wish that the DVD had performances of the tricks with an audience, but perhaps that is in Larry's future!

Bravo, Larry. This is a well done book.

Thank you all for your support (Kyf, BJ, Marion, David, and John). It means a great deal to me.

On another note, I would advise anyone who is interested in the limited leather edition to purchase it now, since I'm running low on them and they will not be reprinted.

It's a great book - and for reference, the leather bound copy is excellent quality and will last a lifetime.

Is the coin routine spectacular? Or, would you recommend 21st Century Coin for a coin man?
Message: Posted by: Kyf (Oct 13, 2007 04:52AM)
Hi Gary,

21st Century is 100% coin routines. Kingdom of the Red has 28 routines, 6 with coins (if you include the coin element of the Haunted Cabinet), but the rest add variety to any routine.

All of Larry routines are spectacular, IMHO.

I've marked the coin routines below.

Kingdom of the Red

Alignment of colors are Montauk Point
Binary Predictions
Comedy Rope and Ring
Dice/No Dice
Entropy I and II
Flying Single and Double Spinner
***Gateway through Space and Time
***Haunted Cabinet
Intrusive Black Threes
Juxtaposed and Joined
Kingdom of the Red
Lost in Limbo
Magic Lesson
Natural Selection
Outer Limits
***Peace Dollar Production
Quantum Spinner
Rendezvous Aces
Shuffle, Cut and Fold
Three Lesson Monte
Wedding Ring Redux
***Xanthomorphic Coins
You Do as I Do with My Dough
Zero-Sum Game
***All Heads Up
***Backhand Coin Change

Hope that helps.

Hi, another thumbs up for this material. This is my second book from Larry, and I am pleased with my purchase.

Thanks, sleightofhander, for your thumbs up. Kyf, many thanks for your support, too.

I'll be in Paris Oct. 21-27, but the staff at Gyromagnetic Press will continue shipping books/DVDs and apparatus while I'm away.

There is one other routine that uses coins (for part of it), and that's Binary Predictions. That makes 7 routines with coins. Not much sleight of hand used, but it does use a bunch of pocket change.

Thanks, BJ.

Sorry, Larry, I missed that one - neat effect.

Message: Posted by: Larry Barnowsky (Oct 25, 2007 11:01AM)

When I was creating Binary Predictions I thought to myself, if I hadn't created this first, I think Gaetan Bloom (who I greatly admire) would have had to. The method uses mathematics and an apparatus, the style that I think Bloom would have come up with.

On a different note, I am almost out of Time Tunnel kits. So if you are thinking about getting one, I would suggest ordering now.

Message: Posted by: Larry Barnowsky (Oct 28, 2007 07:30PM)
I've located another cache of genuine, solid, Chinese, dollar-size coins. They have milled edges and are naturally shimmed. For each book ordered, while supplies last, I'll include a coin FREE with the purchase of one of my two books; Kingdom of the Red + DVD, or 21st Century Coin Mechanics + Video CD.

All the Time Tunnel Kits have been sold.

I do have a few extra Time Tunnels without the coins (you can get the coins from most magic dealers but I provided them in the kit much cheaper).

I don't know when I'll be able to make more Time Tunnel Kits available, If you would like to reserve a kit, please email me at barnowsky1@aol.com and I'll put you on a waiting list (no money need be sent).

There is a real gem at the end of the book called All Heads Up. It's done with a dozen quarters more or less and a cup or glass. It is basically self working and can be done anywhere you have a small surface to work on. I did this for some people at a diner and performed it right on the counter. It's sort of a prediction effect where the spect. mixes the coins and turns coins over. At the end all coins are facing face up. I wouldn't close my act with this but it's easy, can be done with borrowed change, and there are no gaffs.

Message: Posted by: sleightofhander (Nov 4, 2007 11:29AM)
I like the principle that makes that effect work. Also I've always wanted to learn a good ring and string and wedding ring redux looks like real magic.
Message: Posted by: sleightofhander (Nov 4, 2007 11:31AM)
I just realized I posted off topic about the coin work, my bad.
Message: Posted by: Larry Barnowsky (Nov 7, 2007 10:59AM)

You're not as far off topic as you might think. Wedding Ring Redux uses the type of moves and concealments that coin magicians would find right up their alley. Even if you don't have a rope or cord with you, you can use a shoelace and your own ring.

All Heads Up is fun to do and very baffling. All you need is a bunch of quarters. The mathematics takes care of the rest.

By the way, I have only two Time Tunnels left (all kits sold out).

It sounds like you're kidding but in case I misread your post here's the situation. I have two copper Time Tunnels in stock. This is used for a favorite coin effect of mine called Gateway Through Time and Space which is taught in Ch. 7 and on the DVD. You can see a picture of it at:

I'm hoping to have the kits available in a few weeks.

My book has material that has been performed over decades and it's all practical stuff, sone easy, some that'll take some practice, and some challenging items. It's an assortment of magic with cards, coins, bills, balls, rings, ropes, dice and much more. Also, only 500 copies were printed including 50 in leather so not everyone is going to have this book. The companion DVD further helps you to learn the material.

I just sold the last Time Tunnel I had in stock. I expect to have more Time Tunnels and Time Tunnel Kits available by or before Dec 1, 07. On my website you'll see the words SOLD OUT next to the Time Tunnel. When they are back in stock the "SOLD OUT" will be removed which means that you can then purchase them.

Any chance you'll be offering a dollar size version of the Time Tunnel? I would use it for only the first part of Gateway Through Space and Time or you could do the whole routine using those cards that are half way between regular and jumbo.

Message: Posted by: Larry Barnowsky (Nov 17, 2007 10:14AM)

No plans for a dollar version of the Time Tunnel Kit. I did make a prototype of one for myself. From a marketing point of view, I judged that there would be too few buyers willing to spend the money for the expensive gaffed silver dollars that I would have to stock.
