Topic: Blank deck effect list
Message: Posted by: jfquackenbush (Jun 6, 2008 06:00PM)
Hi everybody, I find blank decks fascinating and would like to compile a comprehensive list of major effects that use blank and double blank decks since it doesn't seem that any such list exists. Also, I'm working on a routine using a blank deck that goes through multiple phases and I'd like to make sure I'm not reinventing the wheel on blank deck/card work. Here's the list of effects I've seen and I'm hoping other folks will help me add to it, along with the sources for the trick.

in no particular order

Dill's blizzard (single marketed effect)
fadeout (Meir Yedid single marketed effect)
mental photography/nudist deck (I don't know the inventor but it must be really old because you see different versions of it everywhere)
I've read Aldo Colombini has a couple of tricks in the Solutions lecture notes, but I don't know what those tricks are.
Wilson's blank deck ACR on pasteboard pyrotechnics
Guastaferro's "Snowball Aces" (I've only seen video, don't know where this is published)
Mathieu Bich's Erazed (single marketed effect)
Peter Duffie's "point blank" (packet trick marketed on it's own)
Sleightly Touched and Mates for Life on Kenton Kneppers "Blank" dvd

That's all I could come up with with a few quick searches plus searching my catalogs.

Any others that should be added? Also, any historical references about the use of blank cards I think should also be considered for inclusion. I'd really like some suggestions for places to research.

Thanks,
Jason

Jason, I don't know if these perfectly fit your criteria, but:
John Guastaferro's Supra Gemini is a great effect, practically self-working.
Aldo Colombini's Draw a Blank is a fun trick.
Richard Sanders has an excellent blank deck routine on Super Cards.
Mathieu Bich's Spreadwave.
Peter Duffie's packet trick, Ghost Flight.
Phil Goldstein's packet trick, B'Wave.
John Bannon's Call of the Wild.

Those are all I can think of off the top of my head, and all ones I enjoy doing. I'm sure the historians in the Café will come up with much more.

The Princess Card Trick variation called Limited Edition (Gordon Bean, IIRC?) I use it as an opener of Mental Photography deck - "Perhaps you're wondering what I do with all the blank cards?"

I Dream of Mindreading (John Lovick)

It's a great blank cards effect in Talk About Tricks Vol. 2.
It is easy and the presentation is great.

Add to that Bob Hummer's (and the many variations, including a recent one from John Lovick called I Dream of Mindreading from Joshua Jay's Talk About Tricks DVD) Mindreader's Dream. Not originally written up with a blank deck, but is more powerful with one.

Check John Racherbaumer's Dreamworks booklet for a whole slew of ideas with this trick.

One of the easy-to-do but knock'em dead blank deck routines in my mind is Jay Sankey's Fade Away in his 22 Blows To The Head...

As well as Helder Guimaraes and his "Blank DEck Routine" on his latest (and only) DVD...

The DeJavu deck get's my vote! Awesome effect, and real baffler (NOT to be used on magicians though!)

John Guastaferro is an excellent source for tricks with a blank deck. And, he also uses a reverse fan which sure looks like a blank deck. His new book, One Degree has at least one trick using a blank deck.

Going back a while but Pale Face Cards by Horace Bennett & Alan Alan is a great trick. Finish clean and everything examinable. Probably no longer available for sale as it used to be sold by Harry Stanley. Easy to make up.

I second Marshall Brodien's Blank Deck, Marshall is a legend of 20th Century Magic, he is one of my friends and Magic Mentors and I hope magicians who read this post will at least take a look at it.....

I also recommend Goshman's Nudist Deck Routine...it's in His Magic By Gosh Book....... Along with Coins Under The Saltshaker, Sponge Balls and the rising cards,
Al made a living with it for years,,,

....also...check David Solomon's "Nothing" routine on his "Card Solutions by Solomon" DVD...it's a KILLER!!!

Having said that, I think I want to order Blizzard from Dean Dill......

I'm not sure if the original poster stills needs contributions here, but ...

in addition to Craig Petty's "Blank" DVD, previously mentioned, he has an effect (called "Over the Rainbow" I believe) with a blank-backed deck. Three cards are chosen, an invisible "magic paintbrush" is waved over them, and the backs are revealed to have been painted different colors.

Then, because the 'magic paintbrush' was accidentally put on top of the card box, the deck is shown to have been painted in rainbow colors on the back.

This is shown in his video on the use of roughing spray, and I think it's in his Kidology lecture; these were available on the Wizard Product Review 'tv' channel (just search for Wizard Fx Tv).

David Regal's open prediction with an all blank deck--except the named card--is called "Alone!"

Alexander de Cova has a nice blank deck routine.
His routine is called "Blank Thought Surprise"

Effect:

The magician shows a deck of cards that consists of blank cards.
The cards have neither a face nor a back.
The magician takes one of the blank cards and writes something on it.
The card is folded and placed in the box from which the cards were taken.

A spectator thinks of a card.
The magician concentrates and then places one of the blank cards on the table.
He claims that this card is the card imagined by the spectator.

First the spectator should read the prediction.

It says:
"The picture of your imaginary card is visible in the mirror".

The magician takes the blank card and places it on the highly polished top of the box (or on a small mirror).
If the card is removed, the image of the freely imagined card appears in the mirror and on the card.

Do Kimoon has also a nice blank deck routine:

My current favorite would be Blank Inside by Kyle Purnell. There is much to like about the routine. It uses no equivoque, no force, ends clean with the magician having the advantage of being done (as in setup and ditched) before the specator thinks anything has really happened. And it uses a freely chosen number (under 30). You can also use Tool to make the ditch worry-free.

I like a couple different versions of ambitious card using a blank deck. You have the advantage of a full deck of "double backers" if you understand how powerful that can make it. Gregory Wilson and Suzanne both have great versions.
