Yet another reminder that any time we advertise, it's essential that we show the copy to a number of different people and listen to their opinions before putting the final version out there in the public eye.

Watching TV last night, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard a line spouted in a commercial for Winn Dixie (a major grocery chain, for those of you not in the U.S.).

Apparently they were trying to show that they donate a portion of their profits toward the early detection of cancer. A noble cause, but some who heard this quote in the commercial might have gotten a different picture of what Winn Dixie is trying to do:

"Because everyone deserves a chance to catch cancer early."

OUCH.

It's a shame there's no Grocers Café where they could have posted the script before they shot the spot so all their fellow grocers could have ripped it apart...

At least they're "getting better all the time!"

(Winn Dixie's latest tag line for those who don't know...)

Ray, you need to finish the poem!

There was a time I had the blues,
the reason was I had no shoes.
Until I met upon the street
a man who had no feet.
So I took his shoes.
Come on, gimme a break, the guy had no feet! What did he need shoes for???

We will see if this post stays. I actually told this story before.

In the "south" as it is where I am now living, the in thing among the religious sects is to denounce the adult book/video stores with a billboard.

Of course the irony is that they create free ads for the places, and basically tell you exactly how to get to them.

The funniest of these billboards was the one which right over the book/video store had a huge sign that simply stated "Jesus is watching!". My wife almost drove into a guard rail laughing.

Not a bad ad mind you, hey if it is good enough for Jesus.....
