Topic: Guess The Rule
Message: Posted by: Freak Prodigy (Feb 3, 2009 06:55PM)
OK, so, maybe I'm stupid, or I'm over analyzing this, but my 8 year old brother brought home this piece of home work;

"Guess My Rule with Letters"
Look closely at the letters that do fit the rule and at the letters that do NOT fit the rule. Then Answer the questions.

FIT THE RULE:
A, E, F, H, I, K, L, M, N
DO NOT FIT THE RULE:
B, C, D, G, J, O, P

1. The rule is____________________
2. Write 3 more letters that fit the rule._____________________
3. Write 3 more letters that do NOT fit the rule._____________________

So, that's it. No one in my house can figure this out. Is something wrong with us? This was home work given to AN EIGHT YEAR OLD!

Who can figure this out?

Thanks in advance.

Brett.

Have you tried threatening to hit him? I bet you could easily beat the answer out of him.

Already did that. Now he's unconscious and his work is due tomorrow!

Hint: Think of curvy letters versus those with only straight edges.

I assume you can work it out from there.

Wow. I can't believe that is it. So simple.

Haa haa, I can't believe I didn't catch that.

Thanks so much! Maybe Justin will send you a free D'lite.

So did your brother ever regain consciousness? if not, I have this nice big cardboard box you can have.

As soon as I saw it, I knew the answer...

because I use the rule in a telephone mind reading bit.

Now every eight year old is going to start doing mind reading routines in school!

Oh well...back to practicing my classic palm. How long does it take to learn, BTW?

10-15 years...

Then I'm doing something wrong because I've been trying for 25 years!

Is there a way I can learn it without all the practice? I want to get premission from my boss to practice while I'm on the job, but I don't think he likes magicians? What to do, what to do?!

This rule is used in the magic game on the nintendo DS and is a very deceptive concept.

I also remember reading it in a puzzle book when I was about 8- so that was 32 years ago!

For some reason, I was thinking the assignment was a math problem.

So, I was trying to find some sort of numerical pattern.

Again, thanks for your help.

Same here until I scrolled down the page and found out what the real rule was.

Curved versus non curved is my guess, I didn't read the other posts, but that jumped right out at me.

Happy Birthday Brett, have a great day! :)

Will freely admit I hadn't a clue. Although I only spent about 15seconds thinking about it before scrolling down. No shame on me, I could beat up an 8 year old any day ;)
