Topic: Worse actors and why?
Message: Posted by: MagicSanta (Mar 6, 2009 04:20PM)
Who, on TV and films, do you think are the worse actors and why? Please try to include some that are noted. My least three favorites are:

1. Martin Lawrence: He cannot act, in fact he takes his inability to act and combines it with overacting to destroy any scene he is in. He has been in some good movies but his facial movements are way overdone, in fact all of his movements are exagerated and he delivers his lines like he is delivering lines. If he had been replaced in Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins by a lamp it would have improved the movie, the lamp could have been in all his scenes and they could hire a 12 year old to read the lines, great improvement would have been found I'm sure.

2. Owen Wilson: Another guy who plays the same guy no matter what the role. He doesn't care if it is a Western, takes place in the modern day, or if he is in a character driven role, he just does everything the same way. He sucks. The only thing saving him is it is funny watching him act so badly, on Shanghai Noon seeing a surfer portray a cowboy as a surfer was funny. If I was the EMT that went to his house when he tried to snuff himself I'd have given him blood thinners and a sharper razor.

3. Alan Thick: How did this guy ever get on TV? He actually makes the cast of Saved By The Bell look talented. He is so unnatural it is sickening and he is bad in everything he does.

Well, what say you?

I'll get boo-ed on this one, but I've always found Katherine Hepburn to be the most annoying actor ever. Mannered and never able to make the transformation.
Message: Posted by: Magnus Eisengrim (Mar 6, 2009 05:00PM)
Jack Nicholson plays the same character in every movie. And he's been boring for several decades.

Any of the Baldwins?
Message: Posted by: Scott Compton (Mar 6, 2009 05:18PM)
Adam Sandler. I have never found him to be funny either.
Message: Posted by: MagicSanta (Mar 6, 2009 05:26PM)
I agree with Katherine Hepburn, never understood her popularity. Sandler is one of those guys who makes a movie that is very funny or unwatchable.
Message: Posted by: Michael Baker (Mar 6, 2009 09:45PM)
I have seen numerous celebrities from other professions, such as sports, talk show hosts, musicians, etc. who get parts in movies, and suck. They are usually noted in the credits as playing themselves.
Message: Posted by: MagicSanta (Mar 6, 2009 11:24PM)
I can forgive those guys, I'm talking 'stars'. I went to school with a nameless actress who has done movies and tv series and while I don't watch her often she is nothing like her real self when she is on TV, she can act! Over acting, bad timing, just horrible performances but they have a recognizable name and they get roles. Then there are guys who you want to suck, like Brad Pitt, and the guy is freakin' good at what he does. I'm a fan of performances that don't seem to be performances.

I personally don't like:

-Kelly Ripa, enough said.
-Eva Longoria thinks she's Miss Astor.
-Drake & Josh-Stupid & untalented.
-Anyone on Disney sitcoms (Trust me)
-Shia Lebeouf, obnoxious, loud, flares his nostrils for every emotion and is nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is.
-Adam Sandler, let's not forget his idea of funny is a speech impediment.
-Val Kilmer, dude's never wowed me and he is a total pedophile.
-Heath Ledger, NEVER seen anything good. He SUCKED in Dark Knight. It was like if George Burns had a concussion and nerve damage.
-Chritian Bale hasn't ever done anything great.
-Raven Simone doesn't have a talented bone in her body. She seems nice, though.
-Julia Roberts plays Julia Roberts in every movie, what a gig!
-Dane Cook hasn't been funny, ever.
-The entire cast of High School Musical. All they do is rely on their looks. Can't act and their voices are emotionless when they sing cuz they're obviously paraded through massive amounts of computer software to improve their voices.
-All the people on "How I Met Your Mother", NOT FUNNY.
-Jennifer Aniston never seems to have emotion..
-Tina Fey has no personality and is over-rated.

And Clint Eastwood always seems to play the same guy over and over and over.
Message: Posted by: acesover (Mar 7, 2009 12:22AM)
While he is a legend. I have to say that John Wayne was not a good actor..just that everyone loved the guy.
Message: Posted by: daffydoug (Mar 7, 2009 12:29AM)
Farrah Fawcett was pretty infamous in her day for her atrocious acting. But then, Olivia Newton John who also can't sing, btw, decided to get into movies..so move over Farrah.

And as far as dudes, remember when O.J. took a shot at acting? Man, I'm trying to forget!

Hey Matthew W, I'd have stuck a crowbar in the wound and pulled it wider.

Boynextdoor, you are very astute sir. Thank goodness I'm not the only one that thinks Heath Ledgers greatest advancement in his art was dying.

I'm not really sure who Tina Fey is, but I always thought all the Fey sisters were good at what they do. Felicity Fey, especially.

Steven Seagal, about as expressionate and versatile as our kitchen chair.

Chuck Norris, who is always himself-though compared to Seagal, he is academy award level.

Robert Deniro in his later years...he used to be good but these days mostly plays a parody of his earlier roles. Still, he is always the same guy.

Tom Cruise. I enjoy the movies, Cruise is just always Cruise.

Everyone on Beverly Hills 90210-new or old series.

Message: Posted by: Cliffg37 (Mar 7, 2009 09:30AM)
Some actors play themselves all the time, and they do great things with it. ie. Jimmy Stewart or Henry Fonda. Some play themselves and are OK, while others are boring and/or terrible.

Demi Moore was one of the best known actresses. Her acting never did anything for me. I was never sure what made her so great. She did make some great movies, but it was more of the situation that made it great, not her.

Drew Barrymore would have been on my list of lousy actresses, but she has managed to turn herself around.

She got popular in a time when "mannered" and "stylistic" were the rage. By the time people got tired of mannered and stylistic, she was a "legend" and couldn't be critisied. (sp)

Rent "The Towering Inferno"

I don't care if an actor only has one character as long as he gets it right.

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood knew what they were doing and did it well.
Same with Jack Nicolson, although I don't really care for him. I liked "As Good As It Gets" though.

Pia Zadora, anyone?

Pia Zadora looked great naked, however.

Can I say that here?

Even worse than her singing and acting is Newton-John's attempt at dancing. Painful.

Randi Brooks! I watched an entire bad movie ("Hamburger, The Movie") just because she was in it.

She's certainly not a great acresss, but oh man!

I would have to say you nailed it, there.
And her singing...that scrannel voice makes me want to stick my fingers in my ears. How in the world did that woman ever land a recording contract???
Message: Posted by: Michael Baker (Mar 7, 2009 10:56AM)
It seems that the "stars" are the ones that don't cut it as actors. One exception in my book is Johnny Depp. He is today's "Man of a Thousand Faces", with lots of diversity in his roles and portrayals.

On the other side of the coin are the minor part character actors with lots of face recall, but little name recall. Ranging from early movies to 50's-60's sitcoms, some of those character portrayals were insanely cool! I rarely see that these days. Now, whenever I see a character actor play a role that's way off the hook, I am imagining puppet strings attached... jerked around by the studio heads. It seems nothing is coming from the actor themself.
Message: Posted by: landmark (Mar 7, 2009 11:34AM)
Two more controversial ones:

Robin Williams and Steve Martin.

Both brilliant at stand-up, and excruciatingly boring and plain vanilla in their acting choices.

Mr. Daffy, it would seem you are not aware of Olivia Newton Johns reputation in Nashville prior to her fame. Let us say that if I was a producer I'd have her over for a private meeting....think Clinton.
Message: Posted by: stoneunhinged (Mar 7, 2009 01:14PM)
I remember when I was fourteen or fifteen and Grease came out. For a solid month, all us guys were talking about how Olivia looked in those leather trousers at the end of the movie.

I honestly cannot remember whether we thought she had a good voice or not.
Message: Posted by: MagicSanta (Mar 7, 2009 01:19PM)
Olivia was a cutie! Of course if people think she was bad in Grease, she wasn't, they need to see Xanadu.

Point well taken. You win a cigar!! :kermit:
Message: Posted by: boynextdoor (Mar 7, 2009 02:34PM)
Oh, totally Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda. I can't stand anything they're in.

And, The Olsen twins. They look like troll dolls. Never were good at anything other than being ugly. And now they wear hideous outfits and high heels. Joy.

Beyonce, she needs to be sent to an island of ravenous beasts. She sucks at acting, can't sing, and is a total ass. You don't sing a Etta James for someone Etta James hates.

Paris Hilton obviously. Being in a film called Wax Museum must have confused her because she just stood there and stared blankly at the camera.

Zooey DeChanel (or whatever) I can't stand that idiot!!! All she does is say everything in the same tone and has the same dumb look on her face. She could be in a remake of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'd kill to shut her up. I hate her so bad. Until she arrived on scene I never knew you could get botox injected into your voice box.

And Bing Crosby also has no personality. He ruins everything he was ever in.

And Ester Williams. No good and too busy always thinking she's better than everyone.

And Jessica Alba. I can't stand her. Also has no personality.
Message: Posted by: MagicSanta (Mar 7, 2009 02:45PM)
I have to disagree about Zooey Dechanel. While you are accurate that she is the same all the time I find her absolutely facinating. She steals scenes just by being in them. I've yet to see a movie she's been in where she hasn't been my favorite part. In fact I saw two movies, Elf and that one with the girl trying to get the guy to move out of his parents house and told my wife she was great in both of 'em not realizing it was the same girl.

About those Olson Twins. I've never heard them talk! I mean when they were kids on that show they talked but since then I've seen photos and film of them walking in their bizarro world. They look like they sound like elfs.

Beyonce is a good looking woman but her voice is like a man out of the ghettos. She needs to get a womans voice when talking.

I actually heard her get interviewed today and she does have a raspy voice, she also seems to be lacking a filter and makes comments she might want to not make.

Now now, let's not say things about '2001: A Space Odyssey' we can't take back!
But that's beside the point...

Michael Caine once said that the best thing anyone watching him on screen could say would be, "I think he's playing himself". And there's nothing wrong with playing yourself, provided you are still good, engaging, skillful, entertaining, etc. Ralph Fiennes, Jack Nicholson, Rebecca Pidgeon and Robert Duvall come to mind. And playing yourself is fiendishly difficult.

Agree with Hepburn. I'd add Gregory Peck and Helen Mirren.

Keanu Reeves is pretty terrible.

In Point Break one of his lines was "I am an FBI Agent!", it was cringe inducing.

I did like the Matrix movies but definitely not because of him.
Message: Posted by: Platt (Mar 11, 2009 02:27PM)
The Hmong teenagers in Gran Torino. What was Eastwood thinking casting them? They were beyond bad.
Andie Macdowell may be one of the worst actresses of all time.
People still act like Hepburn. They just do it on a stage. In Hepburn's day, film actresses took their cues from stage performers where overacting is a mandatory.

Jackie Chan!

No matter what the movie is, he is just Jackie Chan.

I think going to see someone perform and knowing it's them the whole time gets boring and is a step away from reality television.

But seeing a lovable comic play a deranged psychopath is awesome because it's not them.

Michael Caine... Psh. Don't make me put him on here!

I have never cared for Hugh Grant. He has been described as a lower class Jimmy Stewart. I was really bummed when he teamed up with Sandra Bullock. That meant there was a film staring an actor who I refuse to see working with an actress I absolutely love. I will pass up a movie if he is in it. I will always see a movie with Sandra just because of her.
