Topic: The world is sick

I was just trying to find out more information about a school shooting in Germany today, and ran into another report that there was a mass shooting in Alabama.

I'm teary eyed.

What in the hell is wrong? The world is sick.

The world IS a crazy place. All those families suffering because one person
decided to go bananas. Such a waste... :(
Message: Posted by: stoneunhinged (Mar 11, 2009 11:16AM)
Not just one. Two: one in the States, one here in Germany, within hours of each other.
Message: Posted by: Jimeh (Mar 11, 2009 11:23AM)
Yeah I was referring to both actually.
I was taken aback to hear about both of them this morning.

Part of my job includes media monitoring so the TV's are on all day playing the news.
When events like this occur I spend a good portion of the day hearing about it.

Not to mention the countless other shootings that go unreported all around the world...

Sad state we are in now when people can go on a killing spree on different sides of the globe at the same time.

Rest In Peace to the victims.

:(

It says it in the bible: Man against man in end times. Brother against brother.

If this ain't proof, what is?

Nothing new here. there's been killing sprees since Cain slew Able -- Killing one quarter of the worlds population in a single blow.

We've only become more efficient at offing folk in these modern times. Technology allows for an untrained and unskilled individual to take out far more innocent folk these days.

Still sad though.

Future shock coupled with global anxiety.

And not only are we more efficient, we are more aware. The current media lets everyone in the world know everything in close to real time.
You think that the number of children being molested or wives being beaten has increased? No. We just hear more about it because we can. Everything becomes a local story. Is the world more evil? No. It just feels more so because we can't live in ignorant bliss.
This is sad. It has always been sad but now we are all aware of it.
That might be a good thing.

I agree that this sickness is nothing new.

Still upsets me.

It is a very upsetting day. May some kind of comfort one day come to loved ones.

Yep, that's the biggest change: the speed with which information travels. That's why Houdini's 'escape from anything challenge' technique would be much more 'iffy' today (PM if curious about what I mean by that).

Yeah only mass shootings end up on the national news. Here in Oklahoma last week a 12 year old shot and killed his mom. It is sick to think that this is what people want to see on T.V. I do not watch the news anymore. And not much television in general. I will just stick to reading the neighbors paper.

The real question is, what ever happened to just killing yourself?
Now days people think they have to kill others before they kill themselves.

Geez... just do yourself in and leave others out of your wreck of a life.

If you just kill yourself then you won't get your "15 minutes of Fame".

Irosall, what's the point of the "fame"? "Infamy" actually...

If you are dead you are not around to "savour" it, are you?

I say just don't hurt others, do what you like with yourself...
Message: Posted by: stoneunhinged (Mar 12, 2009 02:09PM)
That's true. What's "15 minutes of Fame" when you're dead?

That's where the sickness comes in. The whole idea of "I'm taking out as many people with me as possible" is truly disturbed.

And maybe not new or more common these days. But then again, maybe it is.
Message: Posted by: Pakar Ilusi (Mar 12, 2009 02:16PM)
I think it's more common, just by the law of averages...

More people in the world now than 20 years ago, faster and more accessible media reporting it...

Just means more people are thinking of doing it... Translates to more people doing it for real imo...

BUT I hope I'm wrong...
Message: Posted by: stoneunhinged (Mar 12, 2009 02:29PM)
I hope you're RIGHT, not wrong.

More people doing it because there are...uh...more people is a lot better than a large percentage of people doing it than ever before.

I'm still pretty upset. I allow myself to be. We've got too jaded about all this. It's everyday stuff, almost. So I cry, and allow myself to cry, because I think we've got to go back to caring like we used to before we read this stuff every day.

I remember the very first mass-shooting I was aware of growing up. McDonald's, somewhere near San Diego. I was still in high school, and I was mortified.

These days we read these stories and say, "oh...again...that's terrible...." and turn the page to the next story.

We need to get back to being mortified.
