Topic: Kid Show Stuff - Specifically Related to Halloween

All

I am tryingot put a Halloween Show together for Kids that is spooky but not to scarey.

Can anyone give me some ideas for tricks or performances that they have used that went over well.

I am using some standard magic tricks and converting them to or using with them, Halloween related items. Things to appear/disapear in mirror boxes, square circle mystery, fraidy cat rabbit converted to Ghosts, coloring book converted to a Peanuts halloween one, etc. I also have some things like the silk haunted house and Frankenstein (friendly looking) routines that I'm using right out of the box.

Appreciate any suggestions you could make. Especially if they can use a small child (my grandson - 6). I have already disappeared him behind a shower curtain and found a routine to appear him from a large cardboard box.

There's the Fairchild trick with the candy appearance finale, the Steve Taylor Rattling Coffin, the Practical Magic Black Cat (Cat Who Lost His Tail, something like that), all the "spirit" tricks (rising card, Glorpy and Hyrum the ghost hankies), also there's the Tim Sonefelt Wonder Imagery pumpkin silk blendo, and any candy appearance trick would work.

I use an effect called "The Haunted Castle" by Derek Rutt Creations. It is similiar to Run Rabit Run, except instead of Rabits there are Ghosts and instead of a barn (or whatever LOL) it is a castle. Goes AMAZING with some spooky music, but the great thing is it's not scary it's a comedy effect! I also like it because it goes a step further than Run Rabit Run, because in The Haunted Castle the ghost appears in either of the doors, or on the top towers of either side of the castle, and you can also make the ghost float around (no thread reels etc.), and at the very end the ghost dissapears and ends up being attached to your back! Everytime I turn around the kids scream SO LOUD!

Although I am not completely sure that is still being made, here is a link to his website and a similiar product http://www.derekrutt.com/haunted_house.htm I ordered mine right from there and had no problems!

I completely forgot about Rutt's Haunted Castle version (as well as the Haunted House version) of RRR. A very well-made prop (as all of Derek's cerations are).

One of the illusions my grandson enjoyed performing when he was six was the "Ghost Box," featured as a Halloween front porch illusion and described in The Wizards' Journal #4.

Jim Gerrish has used his "Spiderweb Solo Appearance Screen" from his Book 4 of PVC Pipe Illusions to scare the "yell" out of Halloween audiences.

One of my personal favorite Halloween pieces that is often overlooked by those looking for more "proppy" magic is a little Halloween skit called "Tricky Trick or Treat Bag" from The Wizards' Journal #10. The scary surprise is always on the magician and never on the kids, who always get "regular" treats while the magician draws rats, snakes, and other funny but undesirable treats from the bag. The kids also get to dress up and play a role, and there's a role for a large number of kids on stage if you wish to involve that many.

Afew that I use are Growing Head Illusion, Forgetful Frankie, Visible sawing, Using White, Yellow & Orange silks in a blow tube then taking the three silks and using a crystal silk cylinder and changing all silks to a tube filled with candy corn, David Ginn's "Monster Book" has a lot of good ideas. Mike Bent (forgetful frankie creator) also has a couple other good halloween ideas.

Built the coffin from Magic and Monsters when the book first came out and have used it ever since. Announce that my uncle wasn't at the airport, but his luggage was; let's see if he sent any presents... Good animation and spring snakes too. Added a flash paper burst via a flint flasher just before I open the casket for another gag.

Made up a set of 2oth century silks ages ago with some Hallmark scarfs patterned with spider webs on black and bats on orange. Use them w two assistants to go on a ghost hunt where we scare the bat ghosts out of a haunted house (change bag) and catch then in the spider web nets. Added the use of increasing-sized wands w the third wand holding two sets of spring snakes.

And I use an Abbott's Elusive Bunny Box as the Imagi-monster Box to imagine-up the Abominable snow man. Added a silk with red eyes and a set of snaggily teeth, and the blow-off is my Himalayan Dwarf Beowulf.

Hi all
thank you for your nice comments about the Haunted Castle...as said this is no longer made but a new version called Haunted house will be available from the end of this month May. The pictures are the finished facade to give you the true picture of what it will be like.........by the way I find that it goes well any time not only at Halloween .
Derek
Hope this helps.

I make a 20th Century Ghost set, and couple of other Halloween silk effects. You can see some of the custom stuff that is possible also on the website.

On a simpler note, Do the rope through a child using a pumpkin in the front to tie the silks. Disecto is another good effect provided the kids are old enough.
