Topic: Illusions with a tarnished past.

I'm a part time Magician, we perform at a lot of the same places each year. I try to use a different large illusion if I can, in the show each year. I'm a single dad raising a kid with autism, so I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I'm always on the look out for good deals on used stuff, which brings me to my point.
I came across an ad for several used illusions for sale. I sent the guy a message and he sent back photos of them. For the heck of it I decided to type in his name to see who he was, and it ends up this guy is associated with with that stinking masked magician series. He's asking a halfway fair price for a jam cube, which I could possibly swing once I get my Tax return, but deep down inside I keep thinking that it would be wrong to buy something from someone who has tried to make a buck out of exposing magic to the public. I personally have never had someone yell out how my Zig Zag, Assistants revenge or any other illusion works, but I often do get asked what I think of him. On the other hand I do know a Magician who was performing an illusion that was exposed and he had a teenage kid yell out how it was done.
I would really appreciate your views and opinions about this.
Thank you for your time.

Not sure what he real question is but yes the masked moron is indeed a moron and yes there will be soem that call out they know how its done but that was going on prior to his shows and now adays people are using their iphones and blackberrys to look up the trick while you are performing it.

I had it happen when some one before the show said they new how my subtrunk worked I simply replied "so do I" I kne they did not really know how but they thought they remeberd wha the masked magician did. after the s how the guy came to me and commented that I did not do the same trick the masked magician did as the one he had has a trap door in it! so don't worry about the exposure part.
Now if you are wondering if you shodul by the prop or not as it once was withteh masked moron well first real question is it a knock off or a real legit version. if its a real one then go for it if yo can get a great price and use it for good.

if its a knock off well then yo need make that call.

now to open a can of worms I know most of the Café people wil want to burn you at the stake if you buy a knock off however I find th at kind of silly sometimes as so many top pros and top magic dealers sell knock offs so I never quite understood all the hype, now that being said I do not use knock offs and would not buy one knowingly.

so there you go jsut my thoughts but I think it comes down to your gut check and what you want to do.

good luck

My thoughts on this change as my eyes are opened by talking to other people. Mostly via my chats with Jim Steinmeyer.

Jim tells some great stories on this topic and shares some great anecdotes in the interviews that I have done with him that might make you think.

He was our guest on This Week in Magic last week and I did another two hour chat with him last year.

Hope that those help.
