Carolina Close-up Convention 2010
(The East Coast Super Session)

I’m pleased to announce “Carolina Close-up Convention 2010”. Last year was my first at the helm and I learned a lot. Hopefully with a few tweaks this one will be even better than the 2009 edition,

The convention has been in existence for the past 4 years (under a couple of different names) and has always been host to some great talent such as Fisher, Asher, Wagner, Gallo, Kosby, Skutt, England, Beam, DeCamps, Tyler Wilson, Geoff Williams, Nate Kranzo and many others.

All the talent is already booked! We will continue having the special events that worked and I’ve have dumped the one that didn’t. (Yes I know the contest was painful).

Here are the details . . .

Date/Location
October 1st and 2nd 2010
Charlotte University Holiday Inn
8520 University Exec Park Dr
Charlotte, NC 28262
(704) 547-0999

Talent

I’m very excited about the line-up. I believe we have hit a great balance between established names and new “Up and Comers”. I hope you agree . . .

• Chad Long
• John Guastaferro
• Cody Fisher
• Karl Hein
• Caleb Wiles
• Chris Mayhew

Special Events

Newcomer Lecture –After the success of Aaron DeLong’s debut as the first “Newcomer” lecture, we will continue with the concept again this year with another “mystery” lecturer.

Like last year, the “Newcomer Lecture” will feature someone who is unknown to the masses but will be a familiar name to those “in the know”. The goal here is to give someone a chance to get some of the recognition they deserve as an innovator/creator of magic. The identity of the lecturer will remain a mystery up until the time they are introduced. This year’s newcomer will not disappoint!

Social Jam Hour (Hosted by Eric Jones) – A few years ago I lectured at “The Second Deal” convention in Atlanta. One of the highlights was a session hosted by Paul Cummins that allowed everyone to share a move, trick or idea they had created or discovered with the group in a “formal” manner. With permission from Jason Alford we have taken the same concept and expanding it to encompass all of facets of close-up magic. It was a nice success last year and we will continue it again with a few small tweaks. Once again Eric Jones will be hosting the event.

The Show – A formal close-up show featuring some of the top close-up workers around. Staged like a real show. After last year’s show Eric Decamps said “All conventions should do their close-up show like that one”.

The Sleight Club Lecture – The Sleight Club is taking a year off but will be back next year with a very special lecture.

As you can see we have a great line-up and some cool events. I hope you will make it!

Scott, sounds like a nice convention. Good luck with it! Any hotel discounts or rate info available? Probably still early, but didn't find anything on the web site. Will that get updated as things move along?

Mark.

Wish I could come back! Maybe I'll crash on somebodies floor. Plus I hope the Widespread Panic/Allman Brothers crew shows up. That was a good time.

My old 'home town' ... I have this penciled in on my calendar. Will make it if possible. Sorry I missed last year. Keep up the good work.

Hey Guys,
Last year was a blast. The contest was the best part, so I hope Scott keeps it in for this year!

And I must say that the Newcomer lecturer this year is hardly a newcomer. He is devastating, and easily one of my favorite magicians on earth. Sure, he hasn't worried about getting his name out to the masses, but make no mistake: he will kill you. And I don't mean "kill" in the figurative sense, this guy has told me that he plans on rigging explosives at the event to massacre everyone present. Sign up early to get a great seat!

Thanks again for all the bum kicking, Scott! (Disclaimer: Scott doesn't kick homeless people. I had to use "bum" because A - S - S gets censored out.)

Mark - The hotel rate is $99. I'll have link posted next week where you can get this rate via teh website or you can call the reservation # and say its for Carolina Close-up.

Nate and Tyler - I expect you guys to be there. You'll a blast without the "stress" of performing.

Cap'n Mike - I hope you make it. Bring a group of the Myrtle Beach gang with you.

I'm so excited about the line-up this year... except for that Caleb Wiles guy :)

Scott put on an outstanding convention last year. If you haven't been before, you really should try to make plans to go.

Update!

Due to unforeseen circumstances Chad Long has had to cancel for this year’s convention.

I hope to have him at a convention in the future.
Luckily I have been able to fill Chad’s spot with a great replacement.

Magic Castle Close-up Magician of the Year – Jon Armstrong!

The new line-up is . . .

• Jon Armstring
• John Guastaferro
• Cody Fisher
• Karl Hein
• Caleb Wiles
• Chris Mayhew

Thanks

Anyone planning to attend this year who did not attend last year? Just wondering how many new faces we'll see.

Like Taylor I too enjoyed the competition. The judges reminded me of an evening of "American Idol", Tony Miller was a bit harsh like Simon and one judge was a bit Paulaish (Sorry Eric). That's right old school idol. Everyone was very creative and a good time was had by all.

I am looking forward to seeing all again this year and you as well.

See ya there.

Sorry if I was harsh... I was told by the locals that they judged stuff "honestly, with nothing held back"... So, that is what I did... Then, I was told... "don't be so serious, it is all just for fun..."

oh well...

Hey I want to thank all tge judges for their views, you enter a contest to be judged on their views. Not on what you think they should say. I took they're words rather harsh or soft and put it to use and now almost a year later have improved 200% from what one person told me. So if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.

Actually I am remembering that yer act was quite good... It needed work. As I recall, I picked you and another guy as the best acts...

Tony I wasn't saying what you did was a bad thinking. On the contrary, truth in magic critiques are very rare but a beautiful thing. I was simply stating I enjoyed the whole format. Besides no one benefits from a undeserved stroke of ones ego.

I hear that some legendary work on the pass will be tipped at this convention. I can say from first hand experience that this convention is one of the best kept secrets in magic. Be there or be square. :)
