Topic: New Show - Eric Jones, Richard Osterlind and Matthew Bich
Message: Posted by: Craig Petty (Feb 23, 2011 07:22AM)
Hi guys, this week is our Blackpool highlights show.

We are trying a new format for this weeks show! this week we are interviewing Eric Jones, Matthew Bich and Richard Osterlind. Dave and I would love to know what you think of the new format as it's something we could try again in the future. So if you have feedback please let us know.

Here's the link to the show: Click Here!

Thanks guys

Craig

I like the 'old' format much more because the new format isn't focused on reviewing products any more. For example giving the Dynamo Deck 98% (despite this might be right) just after seeing the trick is like rating tricks after watching a trailer. No need to watch the WPR therefore.

What I like about WPR is you two really REviewing(!) tricks after knowing the secret so I can decide if it is worth buying the trick or not. I like watching WPR because I get a profund opinion of two experienced magicians about 4 products in about 30 minutes which makes the WPR effective, informative and a real joy to watch because Craig and Dave are really cool guys. Things the new format doesn't offer so for me it would not be worth spending time with it in the future.

Hope to see you in good old shape again next week! :)

Craig should I take your words at there literal meaning when you said that Eric Jone's Twizted(a great product btw) is better than ANYTHING Dan Harlan could come up with? I don't mean to be too nit picky but Dan is a friend and what kind of person would I be if I didn't stand up for the people I consider as friends.
Message: Posted by: Craig Petty (Feb 23, 2011 08:17AM)
Hi Ted,

Dan is a great magician - his work on rubber bands alone is ground breaking. You also should know from the review of Switchblade that I very much like him as a performer. The Eric Jones interview was done tounge in cheek with me trying to convince Dave that Twisted is better than Switchblade (which I do believe btw).

However, if you took it as me trying to belittle Dan's accomplishments I appologise to you and him.

As someone who couldn't make Blackpool this year I really enjoyed the format. Particularly liked the Richard Osterlind interview, the coin bend was amazing!

Well to be honest I did not take it that way. It serves as an example to others not to take the off the cuff remarks from C&D as anything other than a couple of guys having a good time. Long Live WPR the Waynes World of magic reviews.

I'm glad you addressed this. I was shocked to hear Craig's comment about Dan Harlan. Dan has cerated ground breaking magic and will be remembered long after many have dropped out of magic.

Even without his rubber band magic, if you look at the body of his work and how it has influenced the magic world, to mock that body of work is poor judgement.

Thanks for your feedback - much appreciated.

The 98% rating was more of a joke than anything after I was totally foolled by the Dynamo deck. We will be giving it a proper review on a future show although it's a great help that we got to see it live. Obviously our main focus will always be reviews although we get so many requests all the time from people asking to be on the show that we thought putting out a show like this every now and again would be a lot of fun for everyone.

Don't you think a special once in a while which focuses on interviews would be a good idea?

Craig

Great show as always. I agree that the Blackpool special was a good idea. I think people just want to be sure that the majority of shows are on product reviews.

You are now required viewing for a large segment of the magic community.

Loved the show guys...interviews every once in a while will keep it fresh.

I think a mixture of both is great...makes it more like a talk show format and gives it some variety. Frankly I'm glad the shows have gotten longer too...gives me more to look forward to on Wednesdays!

I liked the interviews and thought it was another great show (as usual). It was good to see the people who created the effects performing them. I couldn't get to Blackpool this year so I'm looking forward to seeing more hightlights next week.

Now that I enjoyed this show a lot,
let me ask is Richard 's coin bend routine shown going to be released?
Message: Posted by: Shrubsole (Feb 23, 2011 02:57PM)
A very talent bloke that Richard Osterlind. He could be the trick straight out of the packet!
But seriously he is looking well and more relaxed than he does on some DVDs made years ago. Has he discovered the secret to eternal youth?

I like this 'special' from Blackpool and is great for those of us unable to get there. You could keep the normal format and just do the odd 'special' if and when needed to cover an event or happening. That way everyone* is pleased.

* I had better make that 'Most people' or get corrected by a humourless poster.

I think the 'new format' is a nice idea on big events like Blackpool but in general I don't think interviews are interesting enough - not only because people would mainly use this to market their products. With interviews the WPR would become a magic talk show. Nothing I find interesting, but perhaps other people might.

As mentioned what I like most about the WPR is getting a profound and honest opinion from experts reviewing magic products so I can decide if a trick that looks good on the trailer is worth the money or not. As you present the show in a very entertaining way I don't see any need to get other people into the show or change the format in any way. Oh well, their is one way you could improve the format: make it longer and review more products ;)

Hi Craig,

Loved the new format...

I didn't great chance to come to Blackpool , so it's a great chance to see what was going on there.

Loved the fact that you got the guys to demo the effect.. I saw richard oslerlind at a lecture on Tuesday night and we were blown away with the coin warping trick that he performed.. and loved the fact that he didn't give the secret away in the lecture.

He did some great stuff with spoon bending too..!!

Keep up the good work..

Will you be in the shop on Friday?

Cheers

Carl

Eric Jones is a great magician BUT Dan Harlan created "Starcle" the greatest impromptu trick ever!

There's another opinion....With an exclamation mark as well...Must be true then.

Love it too...missed reviews though...where is Osterlind's coin bend version available? Is it on that Without a Net DVD coming out?

Hi guys,
just wanted to make it clear that the WPR is NOT changing. This is a special format just for Blackpool. We hope to do the same thing again but the focus will always be product reviews.

Thanks for all your great comments. Next week you will see me trying to hold it together at 2:30am and it's not pretty!
All the best
Dave

Great show guys and loved the interviews. Your WPR is definately must see TV! I would be happy to see you do an interview show quarterly or even twice a year. It was a real nice change of pace.

I also liked the comment about you guys being the Waynes World of product reviews. After all, you did bow to Calen Morelli last week. (Although you should have also chanted, "We're not worthy, we're not worthy!") I'm looking forward to a future show where you wave your hands in the air and make doodle doodle noises and go into a dream sequence.

So, serious question. The penny bend isn't availble is it? I think I had heard some time before that it's one trick Richard isn't releasing.
Message: Posted by: michaelmystic2003 (Feb 23, 2011 11:48PM)
When I heard about this I wasn't sure, but upon watching it I loved it! BUT, that said, it could never replace the standard format. For special events and conventions though, I love it.

Even though I like the original format way more I really enjoyed this weeks show.
and it would be great to have guest appearances from time to time.
or a show just like the last one every now and then.

cheers,

Anything to keep the reviews as unbiased as possible.
There are already places doing great interviews... but only a handful doing unbiased reviews positive and negative.

I enjoy the reviews as well as your effort in creating an entertaining show. The interviews are great, but I also agree with d above in that keeping it unbiased is important.

Hi Guys

Perhaps Format Change is the wrong way to describe what we were doing with this show. It was a format change just for this week and next week then we will be going back to normal. We will probably revisit this style again but only at special occasions. Our main focus always has been and always will be reviews!

Regarding being unbiased, that's something we pride our self on. There are no friends on the WPR just viewers. As you all know we get a lot of flack for saying what we think. It's never stopped us before and it won't to now.

Hope this helps

Craig

This was by far your best show yet. Well done guys.

To echo others opinions, the mix of reviews and guest spots were great.

Thanks Andi

Next weeks show is the second half of our Blackpool special. Following this we go back to normal in terms of the layout if the show.

Can't get enough of the Wizard Product Review, the best review show by far. I wish they could come to Los Angeles and do a show live from the Magic Castle in Hollywood! That would be GENIUS! However I am super grateful to be able to just go on youtube and BAM there they are! Keep it up GUYS!

Nice show at Blackpool guys! I enjoyed the bit of change. Eric Jones also convinced me that Twizted is a keeper. Producers can always fool us with their edited previews and multiple audience reactions...this is something that is done real time and I still can't believe how visual the product is.
Message: Posted by: mormonyoyoman (Mar 10, 2011 01:43PM)
Though I couldn't argue with the reactions, I originally wondered why Richard Osterlind demonstrated one of the more basic effects with the Dynamo Deck. Until today, when I tried it.

Yow! They really DO start to jump out of their chair!

Lovely show Guys - however you do it!

I now find myself looking forward to each episode in greater anticipation than the next edition of Genii, Magic or Magicseen.

Keep up the great work.

I would like to make a suggestion though:

Please organise all the WPR episodes into its own playlist on Youtube (preferably in chronological order). This way we don't have to search and trudge (?!) through all the different demo vids etc before we get to the reviews.

Thanks,
Aubrey
