Hi Mya,

That truly is an amazing list!!! Shows with a shared interest we really are a global community. Thanks to you and Steve and all the others that made the Café a possibility.

(If you're ever in my area I will invite you for chocolate moose...I'll make sure it's French chocolate and Canadian moose of course) nyuck nyuck. :rudolph:

The list is really mind boggling. Just goes to show you...if you build it, they will come. Again, hats off to you and everyone that was involved with the creation of the Café. :jump:

I am surprised, no one from China? There's gotta be at least one magician there who surfs.
Message: Posted by: Hideo Kato (Mar 19, 2004 09:09AM)
I am also surprised seeing no China. There are so many magicians in China.

I should also point out that Bavaria is not a country. It is the German equivalent of a state.
Message: Posted by: Alan Gold (Apr 1, 2004 12:23PM)
I nominate the Conch Republic for that list.

Sure, people can sit there and say it is just another name for Key West, but the fact is that the Conch Republic DID secede from the United States (April, 1982) and was never reincorporated, AND that the Conch Republic has had its passports accepted in several foreign nations. Just some food for thought. (And if you had ever been here in the Conch Republic, you would realize it may not just be another country, but another planet!)

Not to be picky, but Nova Scotia is a province within Canada, not it's own country. Just a small mistake, and I don't mean to make a big deal about it. Perhaps you can ammend that in your list down the road, as you already ammended some other small errors.

How about the ratio people form other countries to Americans? How high is the percentage of Americans on this forum?
Message: Posted by: Chrystal (Mar 8, 2006 12:24AM)
Hi Edith

It's been my experience after being here for aprox 3 years greeting New Arrivals that the majority of posters are from the US, Canada, U.K, France, Australia and then followed by the other countries. The list Maya orginally posted is also 3 years old and since then many other people from various countries around the world have joined.

It probably needs to be updated.

I've also noticed that sometimes a large amount of people will appear from one country - perhaps friends tell friends and they all join within a short time of each other? Most appear to be from English speaking countries but everyone is encouraged to post as the Café provides grammar host. The post are left untouched except for correction of some spelling in order to assist those from overseas. Truthfully, it's never been a problem as it's the ones that have English as their first language that often make the most spelling mistakes. Ha Ha! I'm just as guilty!

I think this is a political problem.

HK and Macao are parts of China - listed as special territories. Taiwan is indeed a political issue . ..
Message: Posted by: msc455magic (Jun 9, 2007 12:34AM)
Being that I live in Taiwan, this issue has been very controversial over the past few years. Generally speaking, the North believes that Taiwan should be associated with China while the South believes that Taiwan should remain independent. I also recall a politician on TV once said [through translation], "Why don't you split Taiwan into two parts? North and South? Much like North and South Korea." Indeed, that's what I think too.

Charles from Taipei, Taiwan
Message: Posted by: abc (Aug 10, 2007 02:03AM)
The above is only a tiny part of the problem. Without getting into politics too much China and a number of countries believe that Taiwan IS part of China while others believe that it isn't. Taiwan is rightly shown as a country as that is its current status. Whether it will be 1 fully recognized or 2 changed to being part of China is not really for me to discuss or decide. Right now it is in the middle of the two and many people get very emotional over the issue.
Message: Posted by: todsky (Apr 11, 2008 01:28AM)
We'll give Taiwan a half-smiley, then.

Taiwan is not part of China.
Message: Posted by: magic76716 (Oct 15, 2008 10:49PM)
Taiwan has its own President who was elected by every Taiwan's voters.
The TRUTH cannot be confused and ignored.

Maybe someday this country will be part of China;

However, Now it is still not part of CHina indeed.

Now It is a very vague status/position in international situation.

Since this thread is about welcoming members from every corners of the world in a united place, I'd like to welcome our friends from China and from Taiwan with the same enthusiasm and magical expectations: in magic they have a very strong link. Let's share magic with as many different people as we can. It will only make magic better.

I think the final word on a countries status should be elft to its representatives.

So, if the folks here from Taiwan say its a separate country then IMHo that's how we treat it.

Lets not get embroiled in ancient national politics ;)

(I guess that goes for the Conch republic, too :P )
Message: Posted by: Cyberqat (Oct 9, 2010 03:48PM)
Oh... and Wales is part of great brittan... but AIUI the Welsh have their own identity, as do the Scotts.

So if they wanted to be listed independently I say that's fine, too
