NPR had a piece on Krampusnacht. An old european tradition (mostly in the alpine region) that is beginning to catch on in the states.

I think the Reason for the Season is the tilt in our Earth's axis.

Happy Whatever till spring. Then I'm really happy.

Here at 53 1/2 degrees N, I'm really looking forward to the days lengthening. The worst part of mid-winter is going to work at dawn and coming home at dusk.

Hmm, if my son ever decides that simply not getting any Christmas presents isn't a good enough deterrent against being naughty, I now know who to turn to...

We've got a little Bavarian themed town a couple of hours north of here that always does a big Holiday bash. Perhaps I can convince them to include this tradition in their yearly festivities.

Payne, you'll need a Krampus mask for your parade. Check these out, the masks are all hand carved out of wood. I'm amazed at how realistic the expressions are.

[/quote]Same difference, really.

Just so long as I don't have to resort to the Elf on the Shelf- that thing creeps me out. We do have sort of a work-around, though: a 3' tall Mickey Mouse in a Santa costume, whom I've convinced my son is Santa's Helper, and will report directly to Santa everything he does.

Leavenworth. The best place to go for Octoberfest. Except, you know, Germany.
