Topic: Bigger Fish by Peter Turner
Message: Posted by: Biovf (May 15, 2012 05:56PM)
So I’ve just finished reading “Bigger Fish” and I’ve got to say that I got this book because I liked a lot “Symphony of Silence” but “Bigger Fish” is in a whole category of its own. The book itself its very nice, beautiful hardcover with a very “tattoo-ish” cover design and the paper quality is also great. Peter took the time to properly explain every single element of the routines, saying all the “what’s and why’s” and detailing every single sublety. Each routine has 3 sections, an effect (what the audience sees), a breakdown (basically the explanation) and the performance (where you see the complete routine in action with the full script!). In every sections there's lots of golden nuggets and tiny subleties that can be applied to any mentalism routine.

Here is a brief breakdown of some of the contents:
Tattle Tale – This is a lovely hands off routine using esp cards and a couple. There’s a nice story in the script provided which gives this routine a stronger impact. Peter also provides a “couple-less” version of it.

Sweet Force of Mine – A series of psychological forces applied to ESP cards.

The Book of the Fallen (and other additional effects) – This routine blew me away…in my mind it’s worth the price of the whole book! It’s a super clean book/word/name/drawing dup where they have a complete free selection and you always guess their chosen word.

Trust your instincts 2.0 – A very improved version of a routine in Peter’s previous books.

AWAAP – Well I have to say that this is my favorite routine from the book. A friend from anyone in the audience is called by another spectator and that friend makes up a word (the spectator confirms the phone number!). You’re able to divine the word every single time! A terrific concept to say the least.

The confirmation principle – A very powerful principle that Peter uses regularly explained in detail.

Seven bald keys – Peter’s version of Annemann’s Seven Keys to the bald plate, very ingenious and well structured.

Pray proceed – A very nice quick routine, simple but powerful.

Get busy living or get busy dying – Peter’s version of a living and dead test, very strong.

Pm Peter to get the details, I don't know if there's any books left.
I bought directly from him and as far as I know everyone else did the same.

Hey guys,

Even though I have not received the book yet, since I just picked it up today, I talked to Peter about a routine in the book that Biovf said was worth the price of the book

Book of the Fallen

Its a really great and clever principle, and I cant wait to get the book to read through it.

This has so many uses and applications, and I agree this is worth the price of the book, and I havent even seen the other routines.

Thanks Peter

I am very taken by some of the esp stuff, and have thought of a nice way to present it with two people...and I really like the first book test...though I will be tinkering with one part of it...

I bought this knowing there was a phone effect in it, even though I don't do phone effects...but it was nethertheless very enjoyable to read the workings of it...i need to re-read the entire book though, as pete's approaches to things are so different to mine (and partly why I bought the book in the first place)...very enjoyable, and very cleverly put together...

more comments to follow - and I'm glad I bought it...

Here is my review of "bigger fish".....

TATTLE TALE
a couple are handed 5 esp symbol cards each,it is explained to the couple that it is not the conscious decisions a couple make that ensure the longevity of a relationship, but a subconscious connection that the pair shares that is the deciding factor.they are both asked to mix the cards under the table and to turn one card face up and place it in the middle position and square up the cards.
they then bring out the cards and are asked to fan them, when they do the face up cards matches!
they are them asked to turn over each card in turn and they match also!

this effect WILL make the hair on the couple necks stand! the story told with it gave me goose pimples when I read it! I cannot wait to find a couple to perform this on,brilliant!!!

THE BOOK OF THE FALLEN
any book, any place, one spectator(selected at random) selects any page then any word(no force) the book is handed to a second spectator(also selected at random) and they also select any page and any word.
they nominate a judge who selects the most interesting word of the two.the judge is then asked to concentrate on the word then the performer reveals the word!

it has been said before and I will repeat it again, this effect is worth the price of the book! the thinking that peter has put into this is unbelievable,it is as clean as it sounds!!

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS 2.0
the performer invites a male and a female to the stage,he asks the female to mentally create a painting of a place in her mind,he then asks her to build a playing card in her mind, starting with the colour, suit and then value.nothing is ever written down and there is no way anyone can know what she is thinking.
the performer hands a regular deck of cards to the male and tells him to imagine that the female is screaming the name of her card to him,he it told to deal the cards face down until he gets the feeling to stop and then place that card forward on the table.(performer never touches the cards)
the female is asked to name her card that she is thinking of,she says the "jack of hearts",the male is asked to turn over his card and they match!
the performer tells the female to reach under her chair to find an envelope, she opens the envelope and finds a postcard...with the place she painted in her mind, and on the back it says "thank you for successfully transmitting the jack of hearts"!!

the is no p..s...no swapping cards,no deck swaps,no touching the prediction under the chair.this is utter class! I have performed "trust your instincts" from symphony of silence and get amazing reactions from it so I REALLY cant wait to perform this!

A.W.A.A.P
the audiences attention is directed towards an easel covered with a cloth,a spec is selected at random to be a judge type character(so no info can be misquoted by the performer) the spec is asked to select a member of the audience who is going to provide a phone number to partake in an experiment of influence.
the 2nd spec provides a phone number and HE dials it into the phone and then it is called.the performer explains to the person on the phone that he is going to partake in an experiment, the phone is then handed to the judge who then asks the person on the phone to imagine a book in their mind and to call out a page number and a word.
(this cannot be misquoted as the performer is not the one calling out the info, this is completely bookless and is all done in the imagination)
for example the person on the phone says page 63 and the word is dust, the cloth is pulled away from the easel to reveal the prediction...page 63 and the word DUST!!
and the spectator can call their friend back after the show!

every effect in this book I was smiling to myself as I was reading them but this gave me butterflies just like you get when you drive over a humpback bridge!! ffing amazing this effect is,i wasnt really into phone effects on stage before but this one has changed my mind, there is no special apps,no onstage prompting,no instant stooging and again no preshow.

SEVEN BALD KEYS
a ring is borrowed, examined and locked onto a padlock which can also be examined all by a spectator.
the owner of the ring is blindfolded, while the spec that examined the lock and ring is asked to assist the performer to ensure everything is fair and to try the keys.
7 pay envelopes containing keys are laid out infront of the owner of the ring mixed by the helper.the ring owner is then asked to hover her hand over the envelopes and to decide upon one of the envelopes, she selects an envelope.
the other 6 envelopes are opened and the keys inside each envelope are check to see if they will open the lock and prove that they cant open it.
the envelope that the ring owner chose is opened and the key inside is tried in the lock and CLICK it opens!
no equivoque,no switching keys, and envelope choice is a free choice!

I like this one alot, its not something I can see myself performing for awhile but that doesn't mean it isn't good,it IS very very good!!

GET BUSY LIVING OR GET BUSY DYING
5 cards,4 saying living and 1 saying dead are examined and shuffled by a random spectator.5 random people are selected and the cards are distributed amongst the 5 people.
the performer is instantly able to point to one of the specs and tell them they are thinking of a living person.he then walks passed the spectators and doubles back and reveals the name of a person a lady is thinking of at that moment in time, she is also thinking of a living person.he then deduces the next person that is thinking of a living person.
it is now down to the last two,the performer then takes a white board and starts to scribble on it,he writes childhood memory, missing puppy? woods...rusty?
he then deduces who is thinking of living and who is thinking of dead! as the two specs head back to their seats the performer stops one of them and asks her what she was thinking while up on stage, she says she was thinking of her childhood memory when her puppy called rusty got lost in the woods!
no pre show and the cards are not marked!

ive never done a living or dead test but this is definately one I most certainly will be performing! trust me this will play very strong!!

this is my first real review ive done on a book so please forgive me if its not up to your standard, this book to me is THE DOGS BOLLOX!!!!!! I would seriously give each effect in the book a 10/10,with each effect peter kindly credits everyone that needs to be credited, the verbal subtleties is where the real value lies and with each effect everything is broken down so the explanation is simple to follow!
to be able to have mr bob cassidy write the forward is saying alot,i predict that peter turner is going to be very big,he is a serious thinker and really thinks outside the box,
to anyone that didn't bother purchasing this then hey your loss!

The post came this morning on my way to work, I was so tempted to stay at home!! ;) I have just read and re-read Tattle Tale, wonderful stuff and suits the way I love to perform - given the right venue.

I have other commitments tonight so, alas, I have to put the book down until later.

I knew when I ordered that I wouldn't be dissapointed. Only one effect read so far but I think this book will be a classic!

Even more important though, Pete is a good guy, and a very generous guy, if he keeps himself together - he can go "all the way"!.

After having some free time yesterday, I turned my phone to silent; had more tea than China and decided to read the entire book: This wasn't a chore.

Peter's writing and thinking makes this an easy read and I found myself sinking into "Bigger Fish".

I won't break down the effects, as magicman has done a good job of that already.

What I will say is this is a fantastic book with some great ideas. Some are re-workings or layered methods, but, as Peter says, it's not just about the method. You will want to read the performance scripting and the effect description as the nuances you MAY think of will make sense.

The first effect with ESP is such a beautiful story and as magicman correctly states: "It will make your hairs stand on end."

What I will add is how benevolent Peter is. Extremely helpful and friendly and isn't just in it to 'make a quick buck'.

I will read this book several times and will definitely use a couple of the effects.

PLUS - Not only did I receive the book, but Peter kindly sent links to video explanations, a copy of "Isabella's Star" and "A Symphony of Silence"

And, finally, on a separate note - The artwork on the dust cover is great!

10/10 Peter. Great stuff!

Lucky For me I got to see pete perform a close up version of awaap at the weekend and must say it was amazing!
When I read awaap in bigger fish I could only imagine how it would look and after seeing pete perform it live made me think that with a little bit of tweeking you can perform mostly
Any stage effect close up!
Peter performed awaap for two girls in a pub with me and his friend tom (top bloke), the four of us were floored by it even though I know the method :)
I said it before and I will say it again I'm glad there is only 50 copies of bigger fish, the less people know these effects the better!

From spectator as mind reader to telephone mentalism.

I would like to offer my thoughts on 'Bigger Fish' and the even Bigger Fish, Peter Turner himself.

Allow me to explain, I purchased Pete's book a couple of weeks ago as an early birth anniversary present to myself and more importantly I met Peter Turner.
I PM'ed him on here (at 11pm approx) and he was online so he swiftly replied, I sent him the payment for Bigger Fish via paypal and received an email within minutes. Peter thanked me for buying the book and included, as a gift, his skype lecture, a draft copy of Isabella's Star and his Symphony of Silence ebook.

An extremely generous gesture. Which is indicative of his nature, Pete is a really great guy. I know this because after he emailed me his skype address we chatted and he showed me MY book that he would be sending the next morning. He then proceeded to perform each effect from the book, every one 100 times stronger than the effect descriptions read. My mind was blown, after a moment basking in the pleasure of amazement he began explaining the methods to me and teaching me all the subtle nuances.

So I received personal tuition on material I purchased minutes before. Customer service, no. It was 'Bigger' than service.

But this isn't the main reason he's a BIG FISH. Speaking of fish... I have said this before but it bears saying again. I think that the key principles behind this kind of mentalism are EVOLUTIONARY.

Me and Peter have chatted at length many times since we met and discussed many topics and areas of the mystery arts.

I feel that the next evolutionary step is 'Real Mind-Reading', a symbiotic combination of methods, ideas, psychology, linguistics and more.

Let those with ears hear and those with eyes see...let those with minds think.

I may have said too much already.

Jeeeez there'll be no talkin' to 'im in a bit.

At the end of the day he's just some bloke from Yorkshire.

and you know what they say.....

It's not a routine but the confirmation principle is my favorite idea in his book, I know It will enhance my mind reading performance. Brilliant!
Message: Posted by: SubconsciousSymbols (Jun 25, 2012 09:01AM)
I'll second that Parmenion.

Peter is also expanding the confirmation principle, he has already shown me several new uses for it.

It is principles like this that elevate our mind-reading to an incredible level and we need more of them. (get thinking Peter!)

I know this is not anything to do with current affairs but I will post it here anyway :P

This is what I decided would be the effect that went into Dale's book :D

You guys are the first to get a peek at it ;)

Mind Map

Effect:

The performer introduces a wooden box and places it on display on a near by table. He then invites a subject onto the stage and asks him if he's happy to participate in an experiment between two minds. After the subject has agreed, the performer asks the subject to ensure he never says anything out loud, never nods and that he stays as in animate as possible.

The performer explains to the subject that every time he touches the air (like he's drawing a full stop) the subject is to think of a different letter of the alphabet.

The performer starts to touch the air (he never draws letters, just literally makes full stops in different parts of the air). The performer never says anything during this process, it's just mind to mind.

He tells the subject to think stop on an invisible letter (remember the subject is never going to nod, move or say anything). The performer makes a notion of wiping the air clean as though they really were letters in the air. The performer now draws an invisible world map in the air and asks the subject to merely think of a country starting with that letter.

(Remember he has never said anything out loud and had free choice of any letter).

He is to imagine travelling to that country, walking into a gift shop and bringing one gift back from his mental journey.

The subject is now asked to say where he went and what gift he brought back.

He says “Holland” and “Clogs”

The box is opened and sure enough inside is a pair of clogs, with the word Holland engraved in them!

No Pre-show, the subject never writes anything, free choice of any letter (therefore it could be any country) and there is no instant stooging.

P.s You never touch the box once it is placed on the table!

:D cheese!

Peter touched on this during our marathon Skype session.

I'd like to think I was the inspiration for Holland and Clogs :) but I doubt it.

Only if you can persuade someone to part with their copy.

Only 75 copies printed. I don't miss the boat often, but this boat sailed well before I boarded. That's for sure.

I remember a fairly high price tag and Peter was fairly unknown at the time. I took a chance because I sensed something special about Pete. So glad I bought Bigger Fish (worth every penny) and helps make up for some other not so good purchases.

Hey Guys,

If anyone wants a copy, I have one for sale right now. PM me for more information. I need to pay off my college fees so as much as I don't want to sell it off, I have to.

This hardly comes up for sale and as you guys know, only 50 copies were sold by Peter. So yeap! (: The routines are exclusive to Bigger Fish and wasn't in Bigger Fish 2 so probably those gems within this book are still gems!

Thanks

You have the wrong product

This is Bigger Fish, you want to list it on 'bigger fish files'

It should be a clue that this is the wrong thread as all the [5 pages] comments are from FIVE years before BFF was released... I know PT does long presales - but even his aren't as bad as 5 years

This project took time and it shows how far Pete has come in his development, not only as a performer but, as a producer too.

The Bigger Fish Files are impressive.

From the production quality, to the material shared. I enjoyed the series/episode style frame. I also loved “sitting in” on the jam sessions the gang would have during the explanations, it’s like you’re really there at a private master class of champions and heavy weights discussing the real work.

The material shared, like Pete, has grown and is polished and developed. It’s very strong stuff. A lot, if not most, is taught demonstrated as propless, that being said, it’s be very easy to add any props you like to any of Pete’s work.

One suggestion, keep a pad handy or open up the notes app on your phone while watching this. That’s one of the things I love most is how often, when I’m watching through Pete’s work, he’ll say something or I’ll hear a framing or premise that I connect with and can adapt, so I’ll write it down and work on it.

The material shared is very workable and useable in the real world. From TV, to up close and personal on the street with real people, from tips on PK touches, to street hypnosis, to psy forces, to using playing cards in mentalism (plus plenty more), every routine and tip shared in the series is a powerhouse and is insightful. For real.

I look forward to seeing more from 13 Souls Productions, to mentalism and beyond.

I share most of your opinions but as Duster said, please take care to post your reviews in right thread.
Thanks in advance!
