Topic: To busk Australia, do I need a working visa?
Message: Posted by: Latig0 (Dec 27, 2012 02:02PM)
Hey there fellows.
I'm planning a new busking trip and this time it's going to be New Zealand and Australia.
Do you guys know if a working visa is needed for these places?
I'm not talking about working permits, which I might need or not, depending on the city.
Any pointers are appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi there first up to work in New Zealand or Australia you need working visas for both. I think you know this but there pretty stricted on this so just want to make it clear.

As for busking your find your pretty free to set up and get on with it. I would stay out of malls. But along buy shopping centres and high streets just go for it. If your asked to move on just move on down the road around the Connors. In Auckland you do need a busking permit which you get from the security on the street. Also there are areas to busk check out http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/licencesregulations/streetperformanceandbusking/Pages/home.aspx

Wellington is a greta place to busk http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/streetperf/index.html

Sydey Australia also has a permit http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/business/documents/Busking/BuskingPermitApplication.pdf

In New Zealand lots of market also like to have buskers. A lot let you turn up ont he day and do your thing. But a Google search on the market well get you a contact. I find this route helps a bit.

New Zealand is very busker friendly and they love magic. Also check this out http://www.worldbuskersfestival.com/

Hello Yellowcustard!
Thank you very much for the detailed information! It will definitely come very handy.
I guess I have to check online or call the new zealand embassy in my city to further enquire about getting a working visa.
Thanks again!

Just a couple quick points to add for OZ. having lived there for a period, years back.

If you're commonwealth (Canada, UK...) & in your 20's, you can get a working holiday visa for 9-12 months.

As far as a working visa goes.....forget it unless you are a neuro-surgeon or the likes.

But your busking and not holding down a formal job.

Unless you're drawing undo attention to yourself, you probably won't get much of a hassle.

They are very strict in New York, Police took a street performers gear not to long made him pay a fine , and
when he tried to get his magic gear back he told me that it had all be "disposed of" as they were not a storage warhouse/
This was very disheartening to hear. Im not sure if ther is anything that can be dome about this .

Just a backup to agree for above Post from Yellow custard

I work indoors now & get paid to perform at festivals & tradeshows....much easier!!

Auckland in particular you can aslo get the permits from the council for 1 yr for free also-takes about 15mins during office hrs 5 min walk from main st,
but in general you'll be ok..

I busked & pitched, magic mainly for 4 years around CBD and had a blast-

Also I worked the 2 biggest Markets for 5 yrs Pitching so the money was More rewarding by far,
on Sat & Suns, a small fee is usually asked for..but worth it.

I also work many years with Promotions company behind scenes & now with the performers for the Auckland Busker festival each Jan
started by Nick Nickolas many years back , hes been in each one except the last 2 I think, Cruiseships now also..
a Huge event with Invited Performers performing 6 shows daily at 5 Pitches with crowds waiting all day
and Our Night show with Big crowds each night etc-Weve had some Big Names here...

This Link shows great Pics we took of the fest & how the People really get into buskers...taken 10yrs though
