Topic: Mini Phantom by Magic Wagon
Message: Posted by: Tony Curtis (Jun 15, 2013 11:43AM)
This is essentially a miniature illusion; kind of like the classic Blue Phantom with Casino Chips, but even better!

A small pedestal, a brass tube with a lid and seven poker chips, six black and one red are displayed. The performer shows the tube empty and then spreads the chips on the table showing them to be solid and separate chips. He then places the stack of poker chips into the tube with the red one at the bottom and then places the lid on. He then snaps his fingers and lifts off the tube, and the red chip is now seen to be second from the bottom of the stack! This is repeated until the red chip mysteriously rises all the way to the top!

Please note that the casino chips can be shown to be all solid and separate immediately after each and every transposition!

This is a great effect with a clever method which of course is completely mechanical in operation.

Mini Phantom measures approximately 8.5cms square by 7.5cms high and is completely hand-crafted using natural aged teak wood and metal with an antique brass finish.

I will post the price and photos shortly.

Bought mine too!!!! I can't wait... this is a great father's day present to myself... OMG! I do like this theme of the chips more than the orginal!
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Jun 16, 2013 12:16PM)
I love the fact that there is no center rod. This really hammers the illusion home that the chips are separate from one another.
This looks to be classic Magic Wagon. Like magringo, I gave myself a Father's Day gift...and with MW's light-speed shipping, I may get it today! ;)

I always wonder how many they actually manufacture?

100? 50?

But judging from the popularity of their Blue Phantom, I can see why this sold out so quickly.
Message: Posted by: MagiChrisMitch (Jun 16, 2013 12:38PM)
Guessing total run 40 to 50 with maybe 6 going to Curtis and 6 possibly going to Stevens, since they sometimes have the new releases (but not the last one for some reason). How about all those that bought one chime in here so a better guesstimate can be made.

MW has had a quite the steady flow of new releases this year. They are a great company to do business with who will always have me as a dedicated customer. Thanks MW!

Tony.... I REALLY appreciate the way you give us all a "heads up" when Magic Wagon is about to come out with a new treasure. It alerts me to the need to closely watch my eMail for the formal announcement from the kind, artistic and efficient folks at MW - so I can pounce!

I was a lucky "pouncer" this time and I am now watching the mail deliveries like a hawk.

Best regards....

Meridanfan -- you are so right...I'll bet by Thursday or Friday our ebay "scalper" friends will be hawking this beauty for $150+ more than it sold for today. Such a shame.
Message: Posted by: ChasVH (Jun 16, 2013 09:43PM)
Got mine as well....never let a MW opportunity pass me by....just love everything about these folks. This one looks especially interesting and will go great with my MW Blue Phantom. I had to buy it 2nd hand as well and pay a high premium for it but I am totally happy with that. It's a beauty of a Blue Phantom effect. I did not start collecting until after this was released. Can't wait to get this new one which I bet I will receive on Wednesday as efficient as MW is.

So, I count 14 buyers of the Mini Phantom on this thread, which I think sets a new record for a MW new release on the Café. Anybody else?

It might be cool to create a permanent thread somewhere on the Café, dedicated to Magic Wagon's enthusiasts like us (to exchange opinions, tips & ideas, reviews, to offer some trades maybe, etc.). I don't know which section would be more practical / appealing for you guys (Tricks & Effects? Secret Sessions downstairs?). What do you think? Any ideas?

Simon

I got one as well, add me to the count.
Message: Posted by: ChasVH (Jun 17, 2013 03:51PM)
Nice Idea Simon....not sure where to put it though...you do want some exposure so buyers of MW effects can find us?

Charlie
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Jun 17, 2013 07:22PM)
I love the idea Simon, but I think Magic Wagon is too obscure to warrant its own home here on the Café. I'm surprised (but delighted) that Tenyo has found such an amazing following here, but MW claims a much more exclusive base due to their limited runs and high price points. It would be like asking for an Alan Warner forum...passionate collectors without a doubt, but not enough bites to deserve a separate section.

I do wonder if there could be a broader thread geared toward all micro-magic collectors that could reach out to all fans of this type of magic? I'll get the ball rolling...let's call it "Micro Musings."
Message: Posted by: simcoscor (Jun 17, 2013 07:56PM)
Thanks Wizard of Oz,
I didn't have in mind a whole section (like for Tenyo, etc) of course, but only one thread, like this one here ("Mini Phantom by Magic Wagon"), but with more a permanent and broader "vocation". The problem with the threads in the "Latest and greatest" section is that they are rapidly forgetten, and it is not appropriate to discuss anything else than one trick at the time (1 new trick or release per thread).

Charlie, I think that the Secret Session downstairs might be a good place for sharing, as it would be more acceptable there to discuss freely about secrets, gimmicks, mechanisms, tips, etc. It needs 50 posts + to have access, but it's not a huge problem I think (it can be reached in one evening! LOL!). The Tricks & Effects might be a good place too. What do you think?

The thread's name could be original, something like "Magic Wagon". OK, OK, I'm sure you have better suggestions... :)

This appears to be a super deluxe version of the Liebenow/Werry classic called Chip Lift, which is an ingenious micro magic effect.

The beauty of the original was that the props appeared so innocent and the base the chips rested on was very plain looking. It will be interesting to see how different or improved the method is.

Looks like another beautiful Magic Wagon piece!

As an additional thought - I am sorry that Magic Wagon does not ship the tricks in the custom sized fitted boxes that all of the tricks used to come in. They are sent carefully protected in bubble wrap - but still I would like to have those dark maroon boxes! (I have had a custom made road case made for my Rhine's Dice trick as I want to be able to take it to performances and have it carefully protected.)

I cant wait to get to this one too. I'm sure it will be another MW winner. These guy's are just so consistent. Review shortly

Simon,

I think useing SS downstairs would work as long as we could get others to join us and its not just you and I down there. (not that I would mind that, but you learn more with more people). How about a short poll on who would join us in Secret Sessions on MW effects? Chime in if you would? I'm in..

I received my Mini Phantom this afternoon! This was my first order with Magic Wagon and I couldn't be more impressed. This little piece of micro magic is absolutely magnificent! It really exceeded my expectations. You guys are in for a real treat. I agree with NashvillNewman's post above that $250 was a bargain for this.

Does anyone know how many were made? This is destined to a classic!

I would bet that Tony Curtis would likely know the edition size of this offering.

(As I have worked through the handling for a good number of times today, I find that the mechanism is expertly designed and constructed. The "something" is SO smooth.)

Thanks for your answer Charlie!

Yes, the purpose of creating a MW thread would be that the largest number of enthusiasts / collectors jump in the wagon! The more we are, the best it is!
So, at least the two of us :) would be interested in such a thread in the “Secret Sessions” downstairs (Banquet Room). Here is the general description of this section:

General magic discussions that may involve the secrets and methods employed in effects. Access to this area of the Café is restricted, only members who have written 50 legitimate posts may enter.

And yes, a short "poll" is a good idea : so...the question is  any other are interested? Other ideas or suggestions of any kind?
Thanks!

I just received my Mini Phantom this morning.
The quality of the apparatus is astonishing! The craftsmanship is top notch!
Despite the fact that the overall effect is similar to the original Chip-Lift, the mechanism and gimmicks involved are entirely different. The effect is much easier to perform than the original, there is no preparation involved (always ready to perform), and the chips are totally examinable at any moment (before, during, after the routine). That wasn't the case with the Supreme Magic verion. The original had some visual "convincers" that are not in play here but frankly, I prefer this Magic Wagon straightforward version by far!

I’m lucky to have more that 50 Magic Wagon pieces in my current collection. For me, this one definitely ranks above average, I would say among my top 10, along with their Blue Phantom. And these two lead to a tremendous combination!
Congratulations Magic Wagon, you did it again!

It's true. The crazy beauty behind collecting Magic Wagon is that the level of appreciation is so deep...sometimes I just look at the finish they put on their wood effects and I'm stunned into silence...

I agree with simcoscor's faves...they are all great...but keep in mind that Magic Wagon does a lot of partnership manufacturing with outside creators e.g. the now extinct Trickery, or our own Tony Curtis and others. These effects are the same unbelievable quality, but incorporate the thinking and engineering of supporting partners. My point...don't limit your Magic Wagon love exclusively to the effects officially released by Magic Wagon. Keep your eyes and internet connection open...

Where do you all put your MW pieces...along with all the other magic. I'll post of picture of my piles... in the office, on my night table, and the guest room closet and drawers all filled up. Agree with everyone on the latest MW effect... its a wonderful piece and at its price I am more than satisfied with quality and effect itself and how its accomplished. Another winner from MW... these are the kinds of effects I like and buy and by the comments most others do too.... keep it going guy's.

Can I have first dibs on The crystal Mental Die then Tony? By the way thanks for the mini Phantom BTW, looking forward to receiving it. Can't believe my broadband was down when this was announced!

I'm about 10 peices behind you Simon with 40 of their effects, still have a few gaps in the collection though. I also have a Blue Phantom so I'm looking forward to comparing the two. A MW thread sounds like a good idea so I'd better spend a bit more time on here and get posting.

Well Wizard of Oz, I'm unable to determine my absolute number 12. If I give you an answer today, it might change tomorrow. Let say that I have 10 to 12 number 12.

I get it....the rest are all good just not up to the other 11. The amazing thing is that there are few if any really bad ones. Maybe ones that are so-so but not bad. These guys are so consistent for so many different effects. Just outstanding all the way around.

I am also a satisfied customer of MW. Really like Mini Phantom. As always service was lightening fast. Anyone come up with some cool patter/ routine for this yet? Why is the chip rising? What justifies doing it repeatedly? I want it to be more than just a puzzle.

Because MW included the use of real props, i.e. casino chips verses the old weird looking checkers from the original trick, this effect is quite easy to work up a story with. Here's one...you bought this beautiful storage container at an estate sale. The deceased was a very wealthy, but crooked, Wall Street broker who had a taste for high-stakes, backroom gambling. He quit his obsession after a near fatal night, when he was accused of cheating. He grabbed his chips and was chased out of the game and nearly beaten to death. He swore it was the evil magic of the devil.

Since then, he made his money honestly, but kept those fateful chips close to him as a constant reminder. Let's see if there was anything magical afoot...

I've got mine ordered, thanks Tony! I can't imagine the two left will be available for long after all the positive reviews! I'll write a review after I received it.
Also, I support Simon's idea of a Magic Wagon thread in the Secret Sessions section.

Thanks for sharing the idea Wizard Of Oz!

Iwas out of town when my Mini Phantom arrived so I just got to play with it today.

To me this is typical and classic Magic Wagon. that si that the props are very well made and they are extremely collectable and displayable 9if that's a word). The actual effect like many of them has been around and is solid, but not spectacular in my opinion. All of the replacing the tube again and again is a little hard to justify but perhaps I just have not routined it properly.

So again, I am happy with the purchase though mainly from the collectors end of it. As an aside, and this was mentioned previously, I REALLY miss the boxes! Whay was this effect not delieverd with the usual Magic Wagon box? Mine was sent (as were the ohters I believe) with each prop bagged and bubble wrapped but otherwise lose. I like to to protect and store my tricks and the boxes were / are perfect for that. At this level I think nice boxes shoudl be the norm and I hope they get back to it on the next effect or even send the purchasers of this an empty box to use.

Only the Jewelry box effects come with the custom made boxes not the teak wood style items as they are both made by different company’s.

Thanks to Mr. Tony Curtis I was able to get my copy of Magic Wagon's Mini Phantom, thanks again Mr. Curtis!

Quality
Every, and I do mean every magic trick they make (at least the ones I have), is absolutely baffling, and so is this one. The quality is outstanding. Everything you get is build to last and (hand) made out of high quality wood and brass. The gimmick operates very smooth and the attention to detail is top notch.

Trick
This 'Phantom' does not work like the 'phantoms' we, magic collectors, are used to. For some this may come as a dissapointment when they open the trick and find out how it works but please ... try it out. The gimmick itself is VERY clever and NOT something you would have thought of probably ... . As with a lot of great magic tricks this is one where I thought when I received it: why the heck didn't I think of that!

Routine
The routine given by Magic Wagon is basic. It is OK, but there are a lot of better routines possible with this prop. See Secret Sessions for more info.

------

Overall: 8,5/10 (as it is sold)
When using a new routine (which enables a vital step in the performance and makes it a lot more convincing): 9/10 (see secret sessions)

This is definately in my top 5 (I own about 11 MW's ;) ). It is easy to do, the gimmick works flawlesly, it looks stunning and with the right presentation/routine this will fool a lot of people! It's a winner for sure. For collectors of self-working micro-magic an absolute must buy.

Diceolation comes in a nice box (however I use them to keep other valuables item. I prefer having my small collection on display)
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Jul 30, 2013 10:01PM)
Yes, Diceolation is old school Magic Wagon, and I love it. All the attention to detail that we expect.
Look up "Quality" in the dictionary...yep...Magic Wagon.
Message: Posted by: teevtee (Jul 30, 2013 10:43PM)
Diceolation is in fact my new favorite MW effect.
Message: Posted by: fregis (Aug 1, 2013 12:01PM)
It is organic...
Inside the box, I also have a few mentalist effects (esp chip-sational from viking, Mikame Card Case, a notepad).
The spectator can't backtrack the method.

Thanks!

Can anyone educate me on how rare getting your hands on a Mini Phantom by Magic Wagon is? I do collect MW items, but not everything that comes out. I am very interested in purchasing it, but I believe compared to it's retail price when it came out that the price is pretty steep. I seen where one on an auction site sold for over $600, which is me is reasonable, the price for the Mini Phantom I am interested in is over double that price. I appreciate any insight you can provide. Thank you!
Message: Posted by: Magic Mark (Jan 2, 2021 05:54PM)
I saw the one you are talking about (for sale right now) and the asking price is absolutely ridiculous. More power to you if you are willing to spend that much for this effect. I want this effect badly, but NO WAY IN HOLY HELL am I spending $1,400 for it.

I'm not sure if the original includes all of the phases shown in this Youtube video. Seems like the finale below wasn't mentioned in Magic Wagon's original description of the effect.
Unfortunately, even $600 would be too much for my covid-19 budget! LOL!

It is indeed very rare. If you are patient and lucky, you may be able to get one at a lower price. Good luck!

The finale in that video was the clever idea of the gentleman that made the video Simon Corneille. Adds a nice conclusion to the effect. It is my understanding this idea may not work on all of the units MW made but it does on mine.

Is this similar to Blue Phantom with Casino Chip? Which is better?
Message: Posted by: Wizard of Oz (Mar 5, 2021 05:04PM)
I find the workings to be easier in Magic Wagon's Mini Phantom than Tony Lackner's micro version of Blue Phantom (although the newer version by Andy Hurst is quite smooth in operation), and the prop is easier to explain because it involves a set of familiar objects. The Blue Phantom set is a magic prop, plain and simple.

The Magic Wagon Mini Phantom is nearly impossible to find, and when you do, it will cost a bundle. If money is no object then I highly recommend the expenditure. If you are in the market for a micro Blue Phantom, Andy Martin reviews several on his Martin's Magic website: https://www.martinsmagic.com/?s=Blue+Phantom&post_type=product&dgwt_wcas=1

Magic wagon definitely makes very good collectible products. I have the Bromley Deck and I was offered $700 for it I did not sell it because I really really like that affect very much in fact it is one of my favorites but I was surprised that someone offered me so much money for it. But magic wagon products are collectible. And let's face it for the most part they are made very well.

Good magic to all,

Eric

When I see all those crazy prices going around, I have to confess, I get tempted to sell... but then I realize that possibly I will be unable to replace it, and my collection will be incomplete, and I quit the idea of selling. Maybe someday, who knows.
