Topic: Please vote for a "Darwin Ortiz At The Card Table" reprint...
Message: Posted by: the fritz (Jul 13, 2013 11:15PM)
In response to a six year old thread about a reprint of Darwin's book, "Cardshark," it was suggested that the title of the thread was confusing (it wasn't then but it is now with respect to his first book). I decided to end the confusion (hopefully) by adding this thread. I vote for a reprint of "At The Card Table." Feel free to share your vote here. If I'm not mistaken, all other books have been either printed as a first run, or reprinted since his first book. I think this one has been patient enough. I can hear cries of "Reprint me, reprint me, please!" Anyone share the sentiment?

1000$ for a book is just a tat too much for me, espescially if it can be reprinted :)

$1000? No. There is one for sale here at the Cafť for $80 right now. But isn't the good stuff worth it? If you really want something, you'll get it. Reprint or no reprint.

He could pay $80 to someone else or give the author Darwin $45 directly when it is reprinted. Why not have the author enjoy a little profit for his troubles?

I don't understand why someone would encourage an author not to reprint his material unless there was the expectation of exclusivity when it was printed...which was not the case with any of the books in question. I have all Darwin's books and I hope that he continues to print them for years to come. I bought them for reading, not collecting.
Message: Posted by: magicfish (Jul 14, 2013 04:20PM)
Jim, it is not my intention to discourage Mr. Ortiz. I believe his books contain some of the best magic in history and I wish him prosperity.

The op asked if I shared his sentiment. I don't. I don't wish to see every great book reprinted. Weather it be magic, or history, or poetry.

The reason I mentioned the 80 dollar book was to let the gentleman know he didn't have to pay 1000 dollars.

Another vote for a reprint from me.
Message: Posted by: the fritz (Jul 15, 2013 10:36AM)
I agree, nooner. I would always rather the author receive the money first. No offense intended to magicfish or the seller he mentioned. I have all of Darwin's other books and love every one of them. I'm am confident this one is no exception, especially having seen some of the material performed on video. I know for a fact Darwin is considering reprinting this book, so let's support this consideration and convince Mr. Ortiz that there is a nice market for a reprint.

Due to financial issues at the time I had to sell off nearly 75% of my collection of over 250 books many rare and hard to find. Tracking down copies of out of print books has become a labour of love and I would LOVE to see this book reprinted, you have my vote assuredly.

Message: Posted by: Leo H (Jul 19, 2014 07:49PM)
Ortiz is publishing/republishing his own books. He recently republished Strong Magic and I believe he might have already republished Cardshark. I no longer see folks on the Cafť looking for Ortiz books.
Message: Posted by: Robert P. (Jul 27, 2014 07:03PM)
He does own the rights but he republished Cardshark back in 2007. Darwin last year in the same thread asked if there was interest in republishing either Cardshark or Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table:

Please Vote for a "Cardshark" reprint

--------

As for not wanting a reprint because you like the exclusivity, I guess I just don't get that. I have many collectible books on my shelf, if there was interest with people and the author also wanted to do it, I would be all for more people getting to experience the author's work.

Our art is so niche and small as it is, we already have that exclusivity.

I would also request that, if possible and not too much work, mr. Ortiz add comments (performance tips and an analysis section) to the book. I believe that mr. Ortiz mentioned he was starting that in Cardshark due to the response towards Strong Magic. If this were to be done, I think it might be in line with Pit Hartling's reprint of Card Fictions where many of the comments were added years later.

I have all of Darwin Ortiz's books. I originally delayed getting Cardshark and was greatly dismayed when I discovered it went out of print and was no longer available, except going for outrageous prices on the second-hand market. So I was grateful when Darwin reprinted it, and I snatched a copy right up. I see now that it is once again out of print and out of stock everywhere, and this time it will never be reprinted, so I give a sigh of relief that I managed to get a copy.

Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table is one of the greatest books of card magic ever published. If you are into card magic and don't own a copy, should Darwin reprint it, you need to grab a copy before it becomes unavailable once again, this time also for good.

Even though I own a copy, I would like to see it reprinted so that others who are unfamiliar with it, or missed out on it the first time, can have the enjoyment of owning a copy and studying, practicing, and performing the wonderful material contained therein.

I want to thank everyone who has posted so far, but particularly kShepher and Ray Haining. I had just about decided not to reprint. But these last two posts have made me reconsider.

I've decided to hold off deciding a little longer, depending on further response in this thread.

Sincerely,

Darwin,

From being the first reply in this thread back in 2013, to numerous other times in this and the Cardshark thread (for example, like here, here and here), I have been really pulling for a reprint.

But after waiting for so long, I lost hope, and ended up picking up a used copy from eBay earlier this year (only a few months before your post came back up...darn!). While it is not in the best shape, and I really would have preferred to get a new signed copy from you, I am grateful for being able to finally have this book.

Though I am lucky enough to no longer need a copy, I know there are many others who would love the opportunity to purchase it. You are an awesome creator and put out some wonderful material and I know a reprint would be greatly appreciated.

Just my 2 cents. Also, just want to say thank you for doing the audio book of Designing Miracles. It is so great to listen to this while mowing, driving, etc. to really make the time go by while hearing you break down and analyze what makes a trick great. I still need to pick up the paper copy (the only paper book by you I still need), but just wanted to say thanks for putting the time and effort in recording that.

Dear Mr. Ortiz,

count me in. For some years now, your books have been my 'main road', my backbone of card magic. I work through them again in again in order of their appearance, a kind of 'programmed course'. If I'm done, I redo from start and every time I discover something new which I haven't noticed before or a new idea comes to my mind. Maybe it sounds silly but I found that by working through your books repeatedly I not only learned terrific card tricks, but also the most important sleights and lot of things on presentation, psychology etc. that have made me a more complete cardician and I use the many references in your books as my 'secondary roads' if I need more details about a sleight or a trick. Unfortunately I havent't managed fo far to find a copy of 'At The Card Table' for an affordable price, so I have to use the DVD as a substitute, which feels unsatisfactory because I prefer books over DVDs. So please: REPRINT ASAP !

Greetings from Germany
Marcus

Yes. It will also continue to be available directly from me for a while. So there is no problem if you have to wait.

Sincerely,

This is where I've ordered it from... didn't think to check here first to see if Darwin had given an option to have a signed copy like I have had done with his other books. Still, at least I'll get my hands on another great book.

I would recommend either purchasing from the author directly, or ordering it from a magic shop. Support Bricks and Mortar magic shops and skip the online dealers.

About half the printing has now been sold. I don't expect that the second half will sell anywhere near as fast, so you still have plenty of time to order. I just thought I would bring everyone up to date.

Sincerely,
Darwin Ortiz
