Ali Bongo once told me the following about the magic community,

"Neophytes talk about tricks, mid-level ones talk about
others unfortunately, whilst the true professionals discuss
not others, but creative ideas and trends."

John Calvert related to me something similiar, but not
quite as succinct.

David Regal creates and markets several new products
for our community each year, not to mention writing for
many television programs. Where does he find so much time
for magic, one must wonder?

He doesn't participate in gossip, but does discuss trends
and creative philosophy in casual discussion.

It took me quite some time before I was able to progress
beyond the second level, I must confess. Being in close
contact with many of the prominent members of our community;
and celebrities from the music and film industry allowed me
to see how they model their lives and follow suit.

It's a path that we all must walk for I surely remember only
discussing "tricks" with fellow magicians at one time. Sure
I regress into negative thinking on occasion, but it's a very
encouraging sign to recognize my error and self-correct.

Happy thoughts and fat hats folks!

Hi Devious!
Great post! William and I got well acquainted when we shared the Charlie Miller Suite at Magic Inc. He was, to use a cliche: ONE OF A KIND.

I drove to Boston with Magic Inc.'s booth (SAM Conv. 1974) and Ali and his mother were passengers. It was a great trip. I earned the title of "favorite chauffeur"! I remember asking him what he was saying as he did the act. he replied, "Gibberish".

I hope you're warm in BAJA. It's about 10 below here in Upper Michigan. Next fall, I'm just going to HIBERNATE!

I'm fond of our friendship as well Gallagher.

Dick, I'd love to read more of your time with Ali Bongo.
He once stole my last bottle of saki at a soiree during a
convention at The Riviera in 2002. There's a funny story behind it.

Gentlemen,
I thank you profusely for being kind enough to read my ramblings
and share your comments as well. I find that by writing down our
thoughts, they serve to reinforce our paradigms.
Fondly, ~Devious

Those are such lovely thoughts ( which could be applied to any art ). It would be fun to make up cards

"Neophytes talk about tricks, mid-level ones talk about
others unfortunately, whilst the true professionals discuss
not others, but creative ideas and trends."

and hand them to a fellow artist that spoke in negative terms regarding others. Not to chastise them or give tough love, but as an after thought in the conversation; "oh, here's something interesting that Ali bongo used to say. You can keep that and share his sentiments with other performers".
