Topic: The Kids Deck: Playing Cards For Kids & Magicians
Message: Posted by: Justin Impossible (Jul 29, 2014 07:15PM)
Hello Café Members!

For the past six months my design team has been working on a new project that will go live via Kickstarter next month. The Kids Deck...a deck of cards specifically designed for kids and magicians. 3 decks in total, a red & blue backed deck containing 52 beautifully designed cards done in a kids style, two fun jokers, and a double backed blue/red card. The third deck was spawned from my time as an elementary school teacher. We call this the ABC123 deck which includes alphabet cards (A-Z) and numbers (1-26). No longer will magicians need to use boring black block letters. And kids will also be able to practice multiplication with the numbers and memory/concentration games with the letters.

At certain reward tiers decks will also include an instructional DVD, "Card Tricks For Kids...No Rabbits Required". We know this doesn’t really pertain to Café members, but thought we would mention it.

Below is a sneak peak of a few images. I will post the kickstarter link when this goes live next month but you can also follow us on Facebook HERE for updates.

We hope you enjoy and consider backing this project :)

How is the main deck different to Kids Kards by Richard Pinner ?? http://www.littleshopofmagic.co.uk/kidskards/index.htm

This has been on the market for years and used by many magicians

That's a great a question. First, Kids Kards is a great effect, and one that I really enjoy using. But, it is an "effect." This isn't a deck of cards, or at least a deck of cards that most people would know to be a normal deck of cards. This is a mental photography deck. My question is this, do you trust a 10 year old with an invisible deck? The answer is obviously no. You can't hand it out and one wrong shuffle and the deck is done for.

The Kids Deck is a complete deck of "normal" printed playing cards. I hate saying normal...what is really normal nowadays :) Hope that answers your question.

I definitely want some of those alphabet cards!

UPDATE:

After careful consideration I have decided to separate the Kids Deck from the Bicycle brand. With a brand such as Bicycle we were limited to what design elements we could implement while including their logo. As you can see, the card boxes are more detailed with 3D features and fun images that fill up the entire area that kids will love. They will still be printed by the United States Playing Card Company at the highest standards. Hope you enjoy!

I don't think it will matter if they're not Bicycle backs. We kids' show performers don't use many card tricks....but I do like to present a few, and these cards look fab!

The decks would be perfect for "Ambitious Card", I think kids will much more easily relate to and remember these images, than a regular deck.

It depends on price, but I'd like to upgrade many of my kids' show card tricks to these. Perhaps you should get some jumbos made as well?

I should add, though, that having once again looked at the boxes, I think the Bicycle ones are pretty cool, simply because they are Bicycles!

What do the backs look like?

A jumbo option is good thinking!

They are pretty cool. There were also a couple other reasons we went unbranded. I think we made the right move.

I like that the cards are actually not so obvious - the ten of hearts is an apple tree with ten heart shaped apples.....

Kids will easily remember a tree with ten heart shaped apples, and I bet many adults won't even recognise it as the ten of hearts. Likewise a shark that's swallowed seven heart-shaped fish.

It's like a hybrid regular deck and a picture deck, cool!

I have a few favorites from the spades and the 7 is one of the them :)

I spoke with USPCC today and we all agree that a jumbo version is a great idea. If The Kids Deck Kickstarter project gets funded we will then run a second campaign for just jumbo cards. The tough thing is they require a run of 5000 just to get started. And we are talking the classic jumbo size 7" x 4 1/2". But hopefully this will all work out :)

Couple quick updates on the backs. The red deck as you see in the picture above will indeed be red. The blue back is actually changing to a different color and the blue back we will unveil next Friday. I hope you are as excited as I am. We showed this deck to kids today and they could not stop going through the pack looking at all the cards. Chat later friends!

Looks nice, except the backs have a top and bottom, a card can be upside down. That limits it a bit, but otherwise a nice looking deck.

Hi wwhokie1, thanks for the comment and I thank you for taking the time and letting me know your thoughts on the back. Yes it is a one way back and I did that intentionally. Remember, this is a deck for kids as well as kids becoming magicians. One of the decks that is widely used by magicians is a Stripper Deck. I wanted a deck of cards that kids could use as a Stripper Deck, without the Stripper portion. And I teach this in the DVD that is also part of the Kickstarter package. You can show the cards to a layman, have them select out a card, and then put it back the same way you would a stripper deck. 98% of people will never realize what is happening. And other than die hard card fanatics, having cards this way really doesn't matter. These cards look like they were made by kids and that's what I was going for. Thanks again for checking it out and any questions are welcome :)

Thanks for the comments about the one way backs. I can see your reasoning, and I don't find the backs objectionable. I do use a few select card tricks with kids depending on the age, some would work with this deck a couple would not. I will say that for a one way back it seems very subtle. In fact I had to look twice to make sure it was one way. I do like the look of the cards, and may even find myself joining in; I particularly like the ABC deck. I always loved Richard Pinner's "Kids Kards" routine (mentioned above), and wished a complete deck of those cards would be produced - but that never happened. What I would really like is some blank face and the ABC with blank backs.

No problem my friend. I will keep that in my about the ABC deck. I will see what I can do :)

I almost presume that you'll be offering a few gag cards like "NO" and 3 1/2 clubs......also double-backers and double-facers, etc. All the standard stuff. And forcing decks, definitely. I think you should print a lot of extra "Y"s, so you can make up plenty of "Y" forcing decks (who hasn't longed for one of those?)

Is a number deck possible? I like the alphabet deck. I don't like the complete words of the cards in the drawings. because I am not english. so other languages can't read it. but I like what you do, great job.

The red and blue decks will have red/blue double backed card. That is the only gaffed card in that deck. In the ABC123 deck there will be a double backer and a blank face card for you to write whatever you want. I always recommend you purchase 2 ABC123 decks so you have a full deck of alphabet cards and a full deck of number cards.

What do you mean is a number deck possible? Totally understand about not being english but you will be able to tell what the cards are :)

Why don't you simply take advance orders from wholesalers which will save on all the kickstarter hassle?

Besides selling to magicians and collectors this is an obvious product for gift and toy stores.
Message: Posted by: WayneNZ (Aug 16, 2014 08:41AM)
Agree, sooner combine it with other items from My normal magic shop.

We already spoke with Murphy's Magic and they will be doing an order once produced. Magic shops don't usually put down on pre-orders and pay you ahead of time. That would be nice though :)

I think they're great cards, and I wish you every success with them. If the day comes when they're £2 a pack, and you also offer forcing decks, and blank-faced decks, I'll jump right in and buy at least 20 decks.

Right now, the cost is simply too high for me to consider, and I really would require forcing decks.

I don't get the way you're selling them. I use only red-backed cards, so blue-backed cards are of absolutely no use to me. I'd order 20 x regular red-back decks, probably 4 forcing decks (nice if you gave the option to choose the card), and 4 blank decks.

Every magician is gonna have his own requirements, but the options given don't suit me.

I think you have to decide if this is a deck for magicians, or for children to actually play with.

Thanks for all the comments. The main issue is cost, it's costs $7,500 just to make one deck (red or blue) and that's a normal deck, not gaffed or trick. That's why gaffed decks are so much more expensive than normal decks. If you want a kids deck I would just pledge a dollar and add on red decks. Or just pick up one and if you like it when it comes in December order more. But if I don't have enough backers the project won't become a reality. Chat later :)
