It appears that there are unknown species interbreeding with our ancestors.... The article suggests a "Lord of the Rings" kind of world.
Did we have paranormal ancestors?

I was under the impression that species are defined in terms of viable offspring. If two critters have kids and those kids then interbreed with the community then both were of the same species.

Introducing genetic material... gotta be careful with coding and expression variables. KISS and expect surprises.
