Topic: Using Magic to change History
Message: Posted by: Paul Lungu (Oct 15, 2017 10:18AM)
Hello, I am working on a video, something like - "8 Times Magicians Changed History", or something like that.

I will be talking about magicians through history, who have accomplished great feats, using their magical ability in fields other than Magic. A few examples are:

Jasper Maskelyne creating illusions on the battlefield in WWII
Georges Melies using new film technology to do magic and thus inventing modern cinematography
Robert Houdin using magic to impress the Algerians on behalf of the French
Houdini using his knowledge to debunk fraud psychics
And so on.
This is what I have so far, possibly a few more that I'm looking into.
I heard somewhere that pirate Anne Bonny escaped after showing magic tricks to a guard but I haven't found any credible sources.

Please let me know, if you have any more examples like this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You!

For Robert and Jasper, you hire a ghostwriter to document your illusory tales .
Preferably one who was not an eyewitness.

These miracle traditions go way back to the New Testament.

Christopher Columbus frightened the natives of Jamaica into doing his bidding in 1504 by causing the sun to disappear. Having an ephemeris with the date and time of the eclipse was somewhat helpful. Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" later used this idea as a plot point.

Daniel Boone saved a fight between his band and a group of Indians who met by accident in a forest by swallowing a knife borrowed from one of the Shawnee and apparently pulling it from his butt. The owner let Boone keep his souvenir...

Christopher Clayton Hutton was another magician who, like Jasper Maskelyne, helped the British develop magic techniques to aid in the war effort--especially to help P.O.W.s in German prison camps to escape and elude capture.

...[/quote]History being a consensus view of the past - look at the Indian Rope Trick or how Ben Franklin introduced the lightning rod. ;)
Perhaps also film makers with a background in magic who introduced how we imagine the past - for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Million_Years_B.C.
