Topic: Use of a non-gaffed pen thru bill in performance
Message: Posted by: will lane (Sep 15, 2018 11:57PM)
Is anyone doing a no-gaff pen thru bill in their performance? I only know of the ones with the paper sleeve or f**d. I am not sure how well they would go over. I would probably avoid the sleeve and use the f**d method. I think this could fit in well with a bill switch as part of a routine.

Hi Will,

I have dove the s***ve and gave it up for the f**d. My partner Tom had a great handling for the Conielius Pen thru Anything but after seeing him session with a lot of Magicians and seeing a few pen t**s go flying I decided not to go that way. I did take aspects of Tom's handling that I liked, like the display before the "poke".

I just did T+R dollar several times strolling yesterday. It went over very well every time. I have a patter line that is sort of funny ( involving defacing currency and laying the blame for the tear on a Spectator.) I think the patter helps to defray the Spectators burning me afterward.

The f**d can show if it is not shown taut and preferably slightly twisted. Making the f**d align with the leaves on the face of the $ and showing that view most also helps. Make sure the triangle f**d is below the other fold for display or it can show from the top. This will put your initial poke slightly off center but it won't hurt the display.
After the "poke" and all around display, grab the pencil from the top (with the hand on the exit side and slightly tilt the top away from the exit) and pinch the pencil through the dollar with the supporting hand. When you "tear" it out it will make a very satisfying sound.

I have the Spectator use the pencil as a wand to restore. Sometimes I have them use the Magic word "Ticonderoga" .

Best of luck. I love this trick.

^ Do you use your own bill or do you borrow one? I think the biggest hurdle is getting the f**d in if it was a spectator's bill.

I use my own bill but I show it held taut between my hands as I refer to it saying, "Did you know there were rules about how you can treat money?".

I don't say check this out, does this bill seem fine to you? I just show it casually as a reference.

Cameron Francis sells a good practical method on his site.

I teach a version in my At the Table. You can see a full performance in the trailer. Its called Play Dough. Its impromptu and 100% angle proof

I went to the gimmicked pen with the cap, after trying a non-gimmicked method. Jeff Olds showed me a simple handling of the gimmicked pen and I've been using it ever since.

There is a non-gimmick version by Michael Kaminskas in the latest V 1.1 assembly if you are a member of S.A.M.

There is a method that uses a s*it (no, not the letter "h" :)) that is easy and looks good. To the spectator, it looks like "Dough", but the bill doesn't have those tell-tale signs. (but you shouldn't hand it out).

Cameron Francis has a completely no-gaff, borrowed props, and fully examinable afterwards: "Driven". It has 2 phases that look just like the 2 phases of T. Wenk's method.

Cameron's is fantastic. Probably the best non-gimmick.

Best

While not a pen through bill, I found this penetration from my youth. it's not the best performance or instructions but could just be, the kind of thing your looking for? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8aoA7yBG8w Personally I think it looks more magical.

My favorite "no gaff pen" thru bill is with a gaffed or add on bill gaff. My favorite pen thru "no gaff bill" is with a gaff p n.
Although this is somewhat of a pun, it is what I believe about this effect. The displays are not clean enough for me in the truly impromptu
versions. So I resort to a gaff with switching and with great displays.

I think this is an effect put out by A Mayne(sp), called Ghost Bills
