Topic: The Official "Trick of the Year" thread - 2018
Message: Posted by: Jamie D. Grant (Dec 27, 2018 09:14AM)
Heya Gang!

Can you believe that another year has come and gone? Holy smokes! And I've got an announcement of sorts: as it is with some sadness that I won't be chairing this years' contest. No problemo, though, as Tom Cutts has generously agreed to step in- and I have no doubt in his abilities to see this through as the joyous event that it is! Thanks, Tom! I'll still be awarding official "Anything Is Possible" bottles for the winners of:

The Houdin
The Thurston
&
The Tarbell

so, on that note, over to you, Tom!

Have fun, everyone! And it goes without saying that I know all of you will help Tom by being positive, celebratory, and awesome! So thanks to y'all, too!

I would like to nominate "CoG", Center of Gravity by Dario Capuozzo. Just a cheap Penguin Magic download, but startling, baffling and wonder-inducing, IMHO.
Message: Posted by: Magic from A to Z (Dec 27, 2018 03:56PM)
Can we include or make a category of downloads (regardless of cost) as well, i.e., Revive by Duane Williams?

Thanks,,,

Amazebox Kraft. Oddly enough, I wasn't that high on it when 1st received, but now that I have fully developed my Sherlock Holmes/Jack the Ripper routine, it has become indispensable.

I love to see whats coming in on this thread. I have been a little out of the game lately, but my best buy this year was

It’s in my Genes - by Michel - Vernet Magic

BTW - Maybe we should announce this thread in other threads just to attract more people?

Best Jan

I like It's in My Genes as well though I have changed the premise. Must be synchronicity at work as I was just preparing some new paper inserts for It's In My Genes a few minutes ago.

Hi Gang! Sorry for the delay getting in here. Kudos to Jamie for once again providing the prizes here!

For those who don't know the rules, here ya go... From Jamie last year

It's that time of year! Who will win The Houdin for 2018?!

First, why "Houdin?"

Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin is known as the father of modern magic. He was born Jean Eugene Robert and took the "Houdin" portion when he married the daughter of one of the few watchmakers of the time who was still using old world techniques; Jacques Francois Houdin. So, in honor of love and the adding of something to yourself to make you better (in his case he took the name), the nature of watchmaking, creating, tinkering (something I think we, as creators all do!) and the simple coolness of the name, it's what I came up with!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Eug%C3%A8ne_Robert-Houdin

Okay- What is your favourite effect that was released in 2018?

Please submit up to 3 entries and we'll tally them up on March.01 (that now gives us 2 months of voting and using various effects that get published at the end of the year). The winner will relieve a special Limited Edition "Anything Is Possible" bottle- "Trick Of The Year" trophy, called THE HOUDIN AWARD! Fun!

2.
3.

As, well, we now have "The Thurston Award"...

This award will awarded to a creator who created an effect in 2018 and who represents the true Spirit of Magic. Great customer service, kind, and a gift to the community.

And, gang, I know firsthand how much of an impact this thread will have on someone's life. Seriously. The prestige from this little thread will drive their sales through the roof. So please let's take this seriously, say nothing but nice things, and have fun! We're going to change someone's life!

RULES:
_____________

What started out as a fun thread between pals several years ago has turned into a HUGE event and, you know what? That's a good thing! It shows that the art of magic is alive and well and that we're all passionate about it!! To help reduce drama, though (we can never eliminate it, I'm afraid,) let's try and keep to the following...

Vote with Trick Name and the Creator Name for Trick of the Year (Houdin). Please submit 3 Entries.
Submit 1 Trick Name and Creator Name for Customer Service/Spirit/Kindness of the Year (Thurston)

If you have been selected and want to encourage your pals to take part...

You must have 50+ posts on the Magic Café for your vote to count. If you're new, that gives you over 2 months to join in the community and share in our passion.

It is impossible to police or enforce a "no asking your clients, friends, etc to vote" rule and, personally, I think it's silly to ask people not to share their excitement. How can you have a contest if you're not allowed to talk about it?! On that note, I ask that you please...

Don't offer financial incentives.
Encourage people to vote for 3, not just one.
Limit the number of your announcements to 3 times.

I trust people (perhaps that's a fault, lol) but I also trust the voting public to choose what they truly feel is the best and not just what soemone tells them to do.

Lastly, this is a thread for JOY. Let me be clear- HAPPINESS! Any post that is not a vote or is something positive, will be deleted. There are other places on the Café (Right or Worng) for political disussions. But they won't be here.

So there ya have it. Let's all have some fun and make Jamie proud to be keeping his tradition alive and well!

Houdin Award:

- DFB by Nick Einhorn & Craig Squires (one of my most used item from this year, it so much fun and versatile. It's like having a customizable Svenpad with you at all time, allowing you to force nearly everything in a very clean and direct fashion. I love it).
- Sixth Sense 3 by Hugo Shelley (despite the lack of customer service from Hugo, I have to say that this is the best magnet dectector and I had them all - Scan3D, Flux - it's customizable with the associated app so you can change a lot of settings including the sensibility, it's small and self contained, you can charge it with USB, the battery lasts a very long time, it's self contained and very durable. I can say that because I had a special leather wristband made so I can conceal it inside and wear it on a daily basis for the last 7 months).
- Timeless by Joao Miranda, even if I didn't use it as much as I want, this item is amazing the way it works and the effect on the audience is killer! It's like a mini big illusion for close up and can also be used on stage, I like the fact I can get a lot from an item like this one. And when you see the working, you can't be disappointed, I think this is a reputation maker if your routine is well structured.

Thurston Award:

It will sound a bit cliché but man, Craig Filicetti (for the Color Match item) and his team at Promystic provide the best customer service I've ever seen. They're quick to answer, they always make their best to help you out, I've bought 2 item from them this year and Bobby was amazing to answer my question each and every time.

Message: Posted by: egoli (Jan 3, 2019 03:40PM)
In 2013 there was some controversy as there were two tricks neck and neck and the trick originators sent out email blasts to get their friends, clients and neighbours to sign up to the Café and vote for their trick. This resulted in a large number of people voting who only had one or two posts to their name. In 2014 the 50 posts or more rule was implemented.

2018 was one of the BEST years of new magic releases! Narrowing my selections down to only three was incredibly difficult because several of my honorable mentions are equally deserving. But, here are my choices:

1) Turner Watch by Nobody Knows (NK)
2) Digital Force Bag by Nick Einhorn
3) Mental Dice by Marc-Antoine

Thurston: Craig Filicetti (the "standard" in our industry)

Honorable mentions: Timeless by Joao Miranda, Bliss by Looch, Flux by Pro-Mystic, It's in My Genes by Michel and Vernet, Split Focus by Gregory Wilson, Mint Box by Daniel Garcia, Peek Pack by Brian Gillis, Scorpion by Bobby Motta and Pro Mystic, Out of the Blue by Mick McCreath, Bliss by Noel Qualter, Copycat by David Parr, C3 by R. Paul Wilson, PIN by Marc Paul, Occultatum by Menny Lindenfield, and Multi-Sensory Bags by Luca Volpe, Alan Wong, and Paul McGaig.

Since this area is searchable, voters should refer to the popular new watch effect as T Watch, not use its full name.
Message: Posted by: egoli (Jan 9, 2019 11:18AM)
It's a bit late for that - the full name has already been mentioned 14 times in this thread

Since you are required to have 50 posts to cast a vote anyway, we should have the voting (i.e. this thread) in a restricted area and then post the winners in either this forum or better yet in the latest and greatest because that is what we are really voting on anyway.

It would make tallying easier because you wouldn't have to double check post totals to see if the member is eligible to vote.

All in favor say AYE.

In previous years the final post would announce the winners as well as having a list of all the effects that received votes.
As I mentioned before that could then be posted in a public forum. It shouldn’t be difficult to perhaps make a couple small edits where necessary in order to disguise the names of certain effects.

Houdin
Isolated - Kieron Johnson
Copycat - David Parr
Deformer - Menny Lindenfield

Isolated was quite groundbreaking for me as I did not have a desire to get into cube magic before. It changed all that.
Copycat is quite simply one of my favorite card tricks of all time. The presentation idea(s), the ease of performing, and the reactions make this one truly brilliant and deserving of recognition. If we were doing a price to magical impact comparison - Copycat wins hands-down.
Deformer - An amazing device with which you will use to perform amazing miracles with ease.

Honorable mention: Sixth Sense 3.0. I have not had much of a chance to play around with this yet, but I suspect this one will be a go-to in my walk-arounds. Destiny Deck is also great.

I would like to recommend a value for money award. (eg. best trick under $100 or $50)
The watch mentioned earlier is great but it's $300-400 for a couple of minutes of magic vs routines that can last several minutes (eg. Pantheon for $75).

I'm really not sure why the Turner watch is on here?......myself and many others have had rediculous amounts of issues with the watch, many people including myself have found the battery has died within weeks of buying the unit, and have had to have it replaced. Many have found the unit to be faulty and have had to ask for a replacement, there have been constant issues with the app not working and having to wait for updates to solve fundamental issues. And the customer service is basically non existant?. Plus we as purchasers were told the watch would be kept hidden from plain site and the next minute were seeing people like Chris Ramsey reviewing the watch with links below there video so hundreds of thousands of people can buy a 'time traveling watch'

As a person that rarely buys anything over £80 to have this level of issues with a product costing over £300 is rather annoying.

Yes the watch does some clever stuff but at that level of cost id expect much higher levels of customer service and quality control? the watch strap was cheap as chips and why would anyone put an ultra cheap battery into a product that needs something crazy powerful?.....

and on that note is worth noting that my watch has failed recently after only a few weeks and I'm hoping another battery replacement will do the trick otherwise ill have to attempt to contact the makers to get a replacement.....which will be painful I'm sure

I must agree with you on many of the things you said.

The POTENTIAL of this watch is/was enormous. But are we voting on potential or what we received?

I don't hate my T watch (as its generally well executed) and fairly priced, but not sure I trust it ENOUGH (yet) to use it on stage for 500 people just yet. And as a result I did not put it into my top 3.

If you don't trust your t-watch, you either aren't using it enough or aren't using it correctly. I perform with it every single day, multiple times a day, and I never have a problem. It is, hands down, the best money I have spent on a magic prop in at least the last five years. I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that's fair, but if people are voting for it, there's got to be a reason why, and that first guy jumping in here complaining about it just makes him look like a troll.

I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that's fair, but if people are voting for it, there's got to be a reason why, and that first guy jumping in here complaining about it just makes him look like a troll.
Because new user - with only 12-16 feet of usable Bluetooth distance, for a stage show for 500 people - that’s not a lot and not reliable enough for me to trust T watch for a show that size. Do you perform often for 500+ ? If not it’s a completely legitimate minor complaint. I stand by my response. I didn’t say it was bad.

Honestly, Mental Di-Mentional is freaking FANTASTIC. It has quickly become a staple of my strolling work!

That's so wonderful to hear Matty. You have no idea how happy that makes me.

It is a worker for me also.....wonderful effect.
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Feb 12, 2019 12:26PM)
Thanks Aligator. I'm thrilled to hear that from you especially because I know that you were on the fence for quite a while about getting it and extra selective about what you purchase. I'm pleased that you weren't disappointed.
Message: Posted by: aligator (Feb 12, 2019 04:37PM)
Definitely not disappointed. This is ideal for walkaround if you have table space available and for close up or as a demonstrator.

Being pulled in so many directions this *** watch. So many ideas yet equally concerns. I have the option to get one and yet sit on a very wobbly fence.

Turn@r had a big booth at Blackpool and I think they sold loads of watches.
A lot.

Also not everyone is using for stage with 500 people

I don’t think it was ever advertised for that I use in mix and mingle and has worked fine since day one

Thank you ladies and gentlemen, voting is now closed. Please give us a few days to tally and verify your votes. We will announce the Trick of the Year winners next week.
Message: Posted by: Tom Cutts (Apr 2, 2019 12:07AM)
My apologies for taking longer than hoped to complete the tally here. Wow, it has been an adventure getting this all wrapped up. Counting, recounting, eliminating the people who didn’t bother reading the rules, conspiracy theories, and even hijacking of threads. Some people overlooked that this is meant to be a fun, friendly competition.

In particular, the Trick of the Year was a neck and neck race which came right down to the wire; ending in a TIE!

So here you have the OFFICIAL Houdin results:

Tied for first:
DFB by Einhorn and Squires
T-Watch by Nobody Knows

Rounding out the podium in third place:
Flux by PM

And because they were in such a tight race...

Another tie is found for fourth place:
Brass Coin Casket by Airship Magic
Blink by Looch

Right behind that another tie for sixth:
SvenPad Ultimate by Brett Barry
Destiny Deck by David Gonzalez
It’s In My Genes by Michel

It really was a year of many innovations and wonderful creations which we all should celebrate.

And let’s not forget the Thurston! This year’s winner is Vanishing Inc.

2018 Thurston results:
1. The crew at Vanishing Inc.
2. Craig Filicetti at PM
3. Mark Traversoni at Saturn Magic

And tied for Fourth place:
Sudo Nimh
Penguin Magic
Marc Kerstein

These are the 2018 top of customer service as voted by you members on The Café.

Good to see this back on track. Thanks Tom and congrats to both DFB by Nick Einhorn and Squires and the guys from T-Watch & Nobody Knows, two fantastic ideas brought to fruition by their creators.
But boy, the 2018 Thurston's, all those mentioned are fabulous, truly outstanding and all deserve congrats.

Well deserved:
I never was a big fan of iPhone Magic - the DFB App changed that
I never was a big fan of "watch" magic - the T-Watch changed that

DFB is awesome. It really deserved to win. Maybe someday it might become totally hands off too :)

Thank you Mathuu for mentioning my new PreDate trick. I really appreciate your consideration of this.
I've just created a performance video which closely matches the basic printed instructions included with the calendar, meaning NoMem, shuffled deck, and cross cut force: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPhhOh3IG94

Also the trick was picked up by Murphy's Magic, so the pre-printed calendar with cover and instructions should be available at many magic dealers.
