Topic: Harry Lorayne Best Ever! Vol. 8,9,10
Message: Posted by: Fayaad Manie (May 17, 2004 05:26AM)
Have anyone seen Harry Lorayne's Best Ever series vol. 8,9,10? I have the first 7 volumes and was thinking of getting the other 3. Any reviews would be appreciated.

I've got them. I think Harry's work is well thought out and it would make a great addition to your library. I would rather he included more magic in his volume 10, as he includes a one-hour memory lecture (which is quite a good demonstration of his memory work, for which he is best known). However, I recommend them without reservation. I definitely think I got my money's worth on each of those volumes. Hope this helps!

Where can you get these?

Thanks Daeichler, I really enjoy Lorayne's material becuase he is so enthusiastic about his performances and his explanations. I do not know where he gets all his energy from. I really feel that he is the best ever teacher of magic. His explanations are as entertaining as his performances.

L&L put these videos out. You can buy them directly from them at http://www.llpub.com. There are other magic sites online, as well, that sell them.

If you like Lorayne's material, you should seriously consider acquiring a copy of his book, "Personal Collection". It was limited to around 500 (or so) produed and sold for $150. In my opinion, though, it is worth it. If L&L does not have any more left (maybe they do??), you could try to see if Harry has any more left. His website (which does not cover his magic stuff, rather his memory stuff, but you can reach him via the site nonetheless) is http://www.harrylorayne.com.

The DVD is out for 8-10. I regularly send an email to L&L a couple of times a year asking if they plan to release 1-7 on DVD, but they state they have no plans as of yet. Perhaps if more people email such a request, they will be more likely to release it on DVD.

Fayaad: If you think vols. 1 to 7 are so great, why in the world would you need a review for the last three volumes??!! Makes very little sense. Why in the world don't people contact me when they want one of my items? Is a puzzlement. And - all the volumes are now in DVD. You can reach me and ask about them at: harrylorayne@eartlnk.net HARRY LORAYNE.

Harry, Why in the world would anyone invest in something without doing some research first?

Check L&L' April Flyer.....all the Harry Lorayne DVD's are there.....go for it

Harry-- With, respect, I think it makes sense to ask other purchasers, rather than the creator, about material that you're thinking of buying. When you do that, though, you're obviously going to get a wide range of responses.

I can only imagine that a broad consensus will establish something that I think is obvious -- Every single volume of this series is MORE than worth the price. If you don't find workable gems on each DVD, you're not trying. And, as has been mentioned, you never have to worry about if you're set up for this, or if you have the right gaff for that...each DVD has killer material that you can do when someone else hands you a deck. I have a ton of stuff Harry's put out, from math to memory to every volume of this DVD series to some of my favorite magic books (particularly Reputation Makers); my personal reaction is, I've never been disappointed with anything he's put out, and I've never for a second felt like I didn't get much more than my money's worth. If Volumes 1-3 in a series are great, and in this case they are, then I think it makes more sense to get volume 4 from a proven source than try volume 1 of another series when you don't know what you'll get.

Probably because you don't spell your email address correctly.

Wow, third thread in one day that I have come across where Harry Lorayne is whining about nothing. Is this normal or is it a bad week?

It's normal.

Hey NeoMagic: You mean if I spelled my email address correctly I can expect a bunch of orders from you? Wow! HARRY LORAYNE.
Hey Dranex: After all the whining I see, read and hear (like yours above), I really think my (whining) responses should be allowed. I do, however, appreciate your insightful input. It did add a bit of class. HL

Hello all,

I noticed this posting and was hoping someone could clear the following up for me. I've actually emailed Harry himself too, but as I'm sure he's a busy guy, I thought I'd post it here as well.

I'm interested in purchasing Harry's DVDs, but I'm confused by the names. Hopefully I can make my confusion clear.

The above DVD set that I linked to is volumes 1-4 of Harry's Best Ever videos. However, from what I can tell, these volumes 1-4 on DVD contain all the material from volumes 1-10 of the VHS series. Is that correct?

Then what does this set of DVDs contain? Is this entirely different material?

And if this is not volumes 8-10 of the VHS series put onto DVD, then where are volumes 1-7? Or if these two sets are meant to go together, then where are volumes 5-7?

Hopefully my question is clear. Thank you all for your time.

Negrette, why don't you contact L&L and ask them the question? I must admit I am a bit lost myself.

Furthermore, by asking a question in this thread, you apparently risk being flamed. I can see the post already:"What's to be confused about? All my stuff is great: get it all! "

To Mr Lorayne,

I must admit I was taken aback by this thread and your response to Fayaad. I simply do not understand why you were so abrupt with someone trying to find out more about your product. It's not because one likes vol. x and y of someone that s/he should necessarily conclude that s/he'll like vol. z. In fact, I personally have been burned enough times to know better. It seems perfectly valid that Fayaad would ask for a review to make sure it has the same quality of content than the other volumes that s/he liked... However, rather than responding constructively, you made it seem that it was completely irrational of Fayaad to even ask for a review... When someone tried to explain that, you completely missed the point and went on the defensive again and even threw more oil in the fire 4 months later.

The thing is the quality of your material is not in question. I am just disappointed by your response... That's really too bad because I do admire your contribution to magic. In fact:

Last April at the 4F convention, there was a vote amongst the attendees to decide who the 3 most influencial card magicians have been. The point was that at the next SAM & IBM convention, magic from these persons would be presented or something along these lines. I actually lobbied to get you voted along with Vernon and Marlo. I actually influenced 4-5 other persons to vote for you because of my respect for your teaching contribution. The result? you actually were voted (I think with about 10 votes) along with Vernon and Marlo as the 3 most influencial card magicians. I believe you just got a few votes more than Hofsinzer (spelling?).

So Mr Lorayne; You have earned the respect of the magic community. There is thus no need for you to be always on the defensive. Appreciate the people who take the time to inquire about your material...

Actually I did email Mr. Lorayne himself too, as I mentioned, and he has already responded. Pretty impressive. Anyway, here is his answer to clarify for anyone else who might have any questions:

Hi: The second Link is an old one. That's before volumes 1 to 7 were put to DVD. The first Link says it all. It's simple. Originally there were ten volumes. When one purchased all ten volumes, they also received the video containing my first two videos from years before. Now, all ten volumes, PLUS that bonus video are ALL included in the four-volume DVD set. That's it - four DVDs containing all. Would prefer if you purchased them directly from me. Any other questions, please feel free to email me. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

And I do agree with purchasing directly from him. Whenever possible I try to do this for magicians. I mean if you purchase something directly from them, they see more of the profit for their material. I like to support my fellow magi.

As much as I would love to buy Harry's DVD's.. I just don't have $100+ to spend on something I know so little about.

Hmmm.... Not sure what you want to to know but maybe I can help:

110 effects over four DVDs explained in EXACTING detail

86 sleights AGAIN explained in exacting detail

The four DVD set was originally in VHS format: Volume 1 through 10 of The Best Ever Collection plus Magical Classics.

Obviously you don't HAVE to buy all at once but here are some of the effects you can research, and many are on Harry Lorayne's YouTube channel

Among the ones I constantly use include but not limited too are:

HaLo Aces, Fantastic Ace Assembly, Take Me to Your Leader, Rock and Roll Aces (Peter Marshall), Earthly Powers (Richard Vollmer), Un-earthly Powers, Magician vs. Gambler, Lorayne's Poker Deal #1, Two Shuffles Harry (Bro. John Hamman), The Sting (Walt Maddison and Harry Lorayne), Color Quickie, Impromptu Out of This World, Impromptu Linking Card, Poor Man's Monte (Vollmer, Marshall, Lorayne), The Ambitious Card Routine, The Invisible Pass Routine, Watch Me Work (Wakeman, Lorayne), The Moving Pencil, Out of My Control.

All of the above IMO are great effects and ALL are impromptu. Harry Lorayne assumes you DO have basic card handling skills but that said, even with the number of sleights explained, Lorayne ALSO gives some cool finesses on other sleights you should already know,

These are an excellent investment - and THIS coming from a person for whom BOOKS are a first choice.

PS: I would be glad to answer any questions about these in PM
