Topic: Gift: Hoshi's Lucky Star
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Jun 16, 2019 06:15PM)
It's been a while since I last shared something.

This is a truly beautiful piece which wonderfully fuses magic, storytelling, and mentalism and guaranteed to be memorable and endearing. Treat it well and it will repay you many times over with good karma in return. And you never know... you may even make the occasional wish actually come true. ;)

I've been working on this tirelessly for several months now and the end result is something very special and beautiful. I'm really very pleased with it and the direction it takes. If you liked A Simple Truth, you're going to love this. Just to be clear though, you aren't going to find a single new method here - not at all. What you will find, however, is a truly magical and heartwarming presentation married to a perfectly matched set of events and principles.

And to the cynics: get over yourselves. You don't know my motivations (nor will you ever understand) despite the fact that you think you know. If you have an issue with that, the problem exists within you and not any imaginary ones that you have prescribed to me.

Look, I know this routine touches hearts. Maybe in some small way it'll help to make the world just a little bit better - I don't know. But you'll never know if you don't try, right? That's why I'm sharing it. This isn't about "tricks". It's about magical thinking and doing something meaningful and uplifting that brightens up another's day and gifting them with a special memento of the occasion that they'll actually keep. If Hoshi's Lucky Star brings a smile to even just one person and puts a little magic in their heart (no matter how short-lived it may be), then I'm happy.

**This will never be made available for sale, though, I may contribute it to a project for someone later on.

If you'd like a copy - there's no strings attached - just PM me with your email addy.

Have a nice day all.

Apologies for the delay in getting through the requests, the last two days were spent taking care of some personal things in my life... and even some performing. It felt really good to be back in the saddle again. It was also interesting to note how much I've changed both as a performer - and as an individual, over the last few years and after such a long hiatus from performing. One thing I've seemed to finally learn is that 'less' is definitely 'more'.

I'll be clearing out my PM box today and fulfilling all the requests received so far. A few people have sent multiple requests - in the same day! Please don't. I promise to take care of you, you don't need to do this. It just takes a little time because every pdf I send out has to be rebuilt by hand specifically for that person because of the coding system I'm using so I can discover who is leaking my work that I share here to pirate sites. I've already discovered two people from the Café here who are doing this. It's really disheartening to see when I'm putting so much work into doing this for people for free and makes me feel like abandoning any last bits of faith in humanity I may have.

And I don't want to do that. I've been through that already and seen the kind of destruction it causes in my life.

@ Lou: Your class will definitely LOVE this. It's one of those rare pieces that plays equally well for folks of all ages. As for the storytelling aspect of it, I think it strikes the right balance between story and effect. There's a fine line between 'too much' story and 'not enough'.

Hang tight and I'll get you looked after, ok?

Sometimes my mind wanders to dark and lonely places, did you know? But not this time. This time, I shall choose to chuckle about the certainty of some things instead of lamenting them and falling into despair...

Yes, that's it. :)

After I downloaded it and opened it, the first thing I literally said out loud was, "woooowwwwww"

I haven't read it yet... I am talking about the formatting and size. Sudo has formatted it extremely beautifully. It has dozens of Pages. WOW!!!

I want to thank you Sudo for sharing your hard work, creativity and time. I really, really appreciate it.
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Jun 20, 2019 01:24PM)
You are so welcome Shaukat!

This is precisely why I do this; I know that there are people who actually appreciate it and that it will make their day. The only way I could be happier is if you use the magic inside to enrich someone else's life. This is especially so with this piece. You'll understand when you've read it all the way through. It's... real magic.

Mind you, this piece is so "me" that I doubt anyone will perform it "as is".

The amount of work I poured into this pdf was absolutely insane - even by my own standards. I wanted the thing to appear as magical as the effect contained inside. I'm pleased you noticed it immediately. 48 pages for a single effect, is, well...

I dunno. :)

Hi Sudo,
I have sent you a pm but it still reads „unread“ in my sent folder.
Have you seen it? It is ok if you choose to ignore me, but I would like to know if there is a technical problem.
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Jun 20, 2019 06:16PM)
As I mentioned already...

I have to set up each file from scratch for each individual. It takes approx. 20 mins per each - from start to finish, until it's in your email.

Now times that by the 60 slots in a PM box... and you'll only be getting a rough glimpse at how long this takes.

It amazes me how impatient some people are. If I was in Sudo's position, I would've stopped sharing a long time ago... but he is a much more giving and forgiving man than I.

I received this and have to say just opening the file and looking at it is stunningly beautiful and put me in a frame of mind that is magical and transforming. And that is just by looking at the presentaion, graphics, illustrations and sensing the mood and style of the author...Sudo. The amount of work that went into this is beyond, Then there is the magic of the routine that can captivate any age person into a fantasyland. This is magical on many levels. Many thanks.
Message: Posted by: Shaukat (Jun 21, 2019 08:46AM)
I read it... And what a beautiful piece of Mentalism it is with a captivating story. As Sudo said you will not find any new method here. However, I believe this is the best variation of the method (and I have seen many).

It packs small and plays big. It's completely hands off and yet everything is always under your control. This effect is colorful, engaging and mysterious.

Also... As I said in my last post, the book looks extremely beautiful. It deserves to be printed as a hardcopy.

Thank you Sudo for sharing this with the community. Your hard work can be seen when we open it... But, when we read it, it's clear that it must have taken you a very long time to put it together. Yet you have shared it freely. You are more amazing than the effects you create. Thank You!
Message: Posted by: rmorrell (Jun 21, 2019 08:53AM)
Sudo, thank you for this, as others have said the care you take in the presentation of this in terms of the layout of the PDF and photos and artwork, and that is before you get to the effect, this is simply beautiful, and I can see it working really well as a one-on-one piece for someone. Without giving too much away having something similar to the photos in the pdf on display in your house for example would be a great lead in to this effect, and what a special giveaway.

Simply brilliant and thank you for your continuing generosity.

Richard, that's exactly what I did. It's an immediate eye catcher and a great conversational piece to have as a decoration in your house.

To say Hoshi’s Lucky Star is a magic trick or mere mentalism material, would be like saying that the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling just has a picture painted on it. You have shared a performance piece that can bring about emotions, allowing a special moment to be felt and remembered.
It is hoped that when someone else presents this, that the bit of soul you put into creating this, in some way, reaches out and touches those who are gifted that little star. It is also hoped, that those of us that present this understand what a powerful gift this is you gifted us.

What I really like is that this has the potential to be meaningful and emotional, but in a way that seems very wholesome and genuine.

I've felt that some of the stuff out there that tries to be emotionally touching ends up coming across manipulative and feels a little dark as a result.

Thank-you Last Laugh and Wrayvn - and you're welcome. It's my pleasure.

I performed Hoshi's Lucky Star for someone about an hour ago. There's a person in my neighborhood who comes by my place every once in a while and knocks on my door asking if I can show them some more magic and hang out a little.

All I can say is that this really moved them. Their secret wish was to simply have a dog. Out of all the things in the world... this is what they truly wanted.

Now I really want to get them a dog. :)

Just read through Hoshi's Lucky Star and am blown away. What a moving performance piece! Can't thank you enough, Sudo, for putting so much work into the project and then sharing it with the community. Unbelievably generous of you. The method is clean and efficient, the presentation is inspiring, and I admire how you even weave your storytelling in to the description and explanation throughout the PDF -- not to mention the care and detail to crediting and inspiration.

Well done, sir!

Thank you - and you're most welcome.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed it.

That plot twist right at the very end was something that had me dancing around my living room in pure joy for several minutes when I first conceived it.

The hard part was hiding it in the synopsis so that when the reader gets to it later in the presentation... it comes out of nowhere like a sudden crack of lightning. ;)

You make a nice star, still working on getting mine to “puff out”!
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Jun 22, 2019 06:08PM)
Thanks. :)

A few tips:

Cut your strips as squarely as possible so that both ends are the same size, and make sure your knot is snug. Make your pentagon as snug as possible and hold the star by opposing corners between the thumb and forefinger and slightly push inwards while making the dents with your right thumb.

You'll get the hang pretty quickly.

Once you've gotten them to puff out, you'll find they are very sturdy. The key is tightness and uniformity in your wraps. If you can indent them too easily, you know you haven't made it tight enough.

There's also Etsy. You can also purchase the strips pre-cut in all kinds of variety of colours etc.

However, I have an interest in origami so I like making each one by hand purely from scratch. There's something satisfying about knowing that each star I gift was made with love by me directly.
Message: Posted by: Sudo Nimh (Jun 22, 2019 09:40PM)
I'm not complaining, but can people please read the initial post. I require your email address. So many people just send a msg saying "I'm interested. Thanks." No email address or anything else.

Also, please check your typing! I've had copies of this go out to random strangers because people incorrectly typed their email address and then they send me another msg wondering where their copy is. As it takes roughly 20 minutes to prepare each file, it adds up to a lot of work because I have to prepare a new one all over again - plus, random strangers are receiving this as a result. Not good. I've had a few emails bounce back several times now due to this. Double check it please. You're making my workload more work than it should be.

Finally, do not spam my PM box please. One person has sent a request three times now - and within hours of one another! Not only is it irritating, but it's not fair to others who are trying to get a request in. If you do that (or you have bad manners), I will simply ignore it completely.

Help me help you.

*Lemniscate, I tried sending you a copy but you provided no email addy and you're not accepting PM's.

Hi Sudo,

Sorry if my PM was not clear. I tried deleting the PM (I think I only deleted it from my PMs) but, and my apologies for not being clear, please ignore my request and, instead, send a copy to somebody else who got in later than me. I won't be able to use this, even though I'm sure it's brilliant, and I felt it wasn't fair to have you spend 20 minutes on something I'm not going to be able to take advantage of. I felt like it was unfair to you as well as whoever might have missed the cut-off. Again, sorry if that wasn't clear. Please ignore my request for this and, instead, send to somebody else as I know it's not trivial on your end. Thanks for being great and best of luck to you in all you do.

As usual, Sudo has once again gifted us with a fine piece of magical theatre; simple in method, and yet complex in possibilities.

I would probably use cards from a Japanese-style tarot deck, instead of the distinctly Western Rider-Waite, just to keep everything thematically unified. But that's just me.

This is what magic should be all about . . . providing inspiration in other people's lives . . . one person at a time.

Thank you, Sudo, for such a lovely gift.

I agree. I allude to that in the performance section when I say "...it was originally played with hand-painted cards, but we'll simply use these three tarot cards instead."

Personally, I'd prefer to actually use hand-painted cards (or something similar) instead of tarot cards entirely. But until such time that I can find a suitable alternative or a gifted artist, these will suffice for now and are easily available. The important thing (for me), is that they fit in the wallet. Audiences don't pay attention to the fact that they're of western design because it's of no consequence; it's the actual symbols on the cards and the story which are the focal point.

That said, I may eventually design some nice cards specifically for this and have them specially manufactured. It's an idea I've been considering for quite some time now; the effect is absolutely worth it.

Sudo was kind enough to send this my way. This is a wonderful piece of art. I could go on and on about all of the little touches, the simple yet devastating method, the script itself. If you've been following Sudo's releases over the past few years, this meets the expectations that one might expect from him.

As mentalists (and magicians), we have a wonderful platform to share our thoughts with others. In this case, I can't wait to take Sudo's routine and share it with my audiences. And no, I won't be performing this in my paid performances. Not because it's not good; it is a wonderful piece. This will be one of those special moments that I save for one-on-one. And it won't be used to make me look good, or to show off my skills as a mindreader. This will be used to create a memory for my participant that they won't soon forget. If Sudo is still offering this, I would ask him politely if he would share it with you.

Thank you Sudo. This, along with all your other contributions to the art, is fantastic.

Thank-you for the touching comments all.

I apologize that I've been slower than usual in getting this out to everyone. I've been a little busier than normal with things lately, but I've pretty much caught up with all the Hoshi requests - for now. I'm really happy that everyone is enjoying this one so much. I've been performing this a lot lately and it really is having such a wonderful impact on people - more than anything else I'm doing. It really is touching people lives in a very positive way and such a surreal thing for me to witness. We have such an immense responsibility to our audiences - and to the art. It truly isn't about us at all. I don't even know if it can be captured in words.

More importantly, this seems to be having a ripple effect too. One person I gifted this to made a donation to the Make a Wish foundation on my behalf. Another helped a graduate student researching autism with their research.

That's the kind of real magic no money can ever buy. I know I've made some terrible mistakes in my life - for which, I truly am sorry, but all anyone can really do is try to be a better person than they were the day before. I'd like to think that in some small way I'm helping to make the world a better place with all this. It seems to be the case so far. Perhaps not; I don't know. But the universe knows what's in my heart and I suppose that's all that matters.

Sorry, I'm getting a little emotional and rambling now.

I'm still taking requests. If anyone would like to get in on this, by all means PM me. I will get to you eventually, though, it may take you a few attempts as I still have virtually no wiggle room in my box.

Such a beautiful routine this is. The method is woven into the narrative in such a natural and organic way. And the production of the PDF is top class. I was very inspired to use storytelling to a greater extent in the future.

I am very grateful for the generosity Sudo has shown by sharing Hoshi´s Lucky Star.
Message: Posted by: boboswitch (Jul 6, 2019 10:09AM)
Hoshi's Lucky Star is a piece that provides an indelible "moment" for someone that they will likely never forget. Sure, there is a little bit of "clever" going on here; however, the "clever" part is dwarfed by the "forever" part. The "forever" component is where the effect essentially allows someone to believe that actions that are all of their own choosing/control can achieve magical moments for them. While I think that it is a common belief that life's magical moments are rare, Hoshi's Lucky Star leaves a spectator with a hope and belief that magical moments will be more frequent/plentiful in their life going forward. This is a piece of magic. However, it is more strongly a piece of hope, real hope. Simply brilliant! Kind of like a star.

Message: Posted by: Seth speaks (Jul 7, 2019 10:51AM)
Finally had a chance to immerse myself in this. Wow, I love this kind of magic! Sudo strikes again... and the result, again, is effing beautiful, simple, and meaningful. Aside from just waxing poetic about the all around wonderfulness of this piece, I will also say that one of the valuable things about Hoshi's Lucky Star is the fact that it uses a methodology that has been explored by other notable players with sometimes confusing results, IMHO. Sudo has streamlined the process significantly, so that this method (or rather, this game) is largely stripped of any confusing factors and is now more straightforward and easier to follow. There is no way a spec walks away from this experience without feeling like they've been touched by something magical.

I will definitely make a jar of stars to keep on my desk at work. I work in a juvenile prison, and I always keep a compact and attractive prop/effect of some sort on my desk at all times, to arouse curiosity and help engage with the kids in fun way.

And of course, to echo the praise of others, the design of the PDF is gorgeous--which makes reading the manuscript a comforting experience, rather like walking through an attractive home that is infused with pleasant aromas and the supportive energy of Feng Shui placement. Another home run from our wise and generous friend Sudo!
