Topic: Tossed Out

Is there a good list of Tossed out effects (whether impromtu or otherwise) somewhere? I love the premise as a rather casual parlor trick during a party or event. I've seen some of the various marketed effects:

https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/stage-and-parlor-magic/gazzos-tossed-out-deck/
https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/card-magic/the-fourth-balloon/

... literally dozens.

Here is what I am after:

1) something as close to impromptu as possible (regular deck or prepared regular deck)
2) something easy for me as a hobbyist to pick up without huge amounts amounts of practice
3) something ideally I can get in bicycle red
4) something examinable by layperson
5) as many outs as possible
(please note - even I find my list unrealistic, so as many of these as possible!)

Can you fine people please help me on pros/cons on the various versions of these effects? While I am fairly knowledgeable on most of the classics, this is one I haven't studied much until a few days ago.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
Not sure what you mean by "as close to impromptu as possible". To me that is akin to being "nearly pregnant".
The setup for the traditional Tossed Out Deck is definitely NOT impromptu. But if you live in the USA where (apparently) just about everyone has Bicycle cards in their home, you could bring your own set-up deck, and switch it for the host's deck.

The traditional TOD involves tossing a deck (wrapped in rubber bands) into the audience. This makes it less suitable for casual small gatherings. You can hand out the deck, rather than toss it. But then, it might be harder to justify the rubber bands?

It seems to me what you are really asking for is the ability to identify cards that spectators have looked at. I think this is generally known as "Card Calling". There are probably lots of ways to do this. An obvious starting point would be to use a marked deck. Again, not impromptu. But would be a killer if switched for the host's own deck.

Your first link (Patrick Redford, Ninja Tossed Out Deck) looks pretty amazing. According to the blurb it uses a full unmarked deck - so examinable. Strangely in the demo, he does NOT toss it out to multiple spectators in an audience. He hands it to one person sitting at the table with him! So not a "Tossed Out" deck, but looks like a great method that could be just what you are after.

Hopefully you will get lots of useful suggestions from magicians with much more knowledge than me. I will be interested too, to see what is recommended.

It seems like you don't really want a tossed out deck per se. I would find it odd to be tossing around a banded deck in a party. Maybe Kennedy's Passed out Deck?

But also you want them examinable and in a particular color? that suggests you want a trick deck that's examinable. :) Theres a version in TA waters Mind Myth and MAgic that not really Tossed Out, but more like Princess Card Trick (not the silly online five card that switches for 5 others and yours has disappeard). But you show five people 5 cards each, and they think of one. and you call 'em out later, and find their cards. all normal cards.

That sounds cool!

There is quite a lot of info on the Café if you search for "card calling".
Richard Osterlind seems to be who most people mention as having the best work on this, although it seems to be a very old concept.
