List your top ten DVD's of all time. It does not have to be in any particular order, but of course you are welcome to do so. A whole series of DVD's can be regarded as one title. Here is my list:

1. Bill Malone - On the Loose 1-4
2. Richard Osterlind's - Mind Mysteries 1-4
3. Tommy Wonder - Visions of Wonder 1-3
4. Dai Vernon - Revelations series
5. Darwin Ortiz - Cardshark
6. Harry Lorayne - Best Ever series
7. Alex Elmsley - The Tahoe Sessions
8. Michael Ammar - ETMCM series
9. Daryl - Encyclopeadia of Card Sleights
10. Lennart Green - Green Magic series
Message: Posted by: LeConte (Jun 18, 2004 03:31AM)
I have around 60 DVD's and these are the best in no real order. These are DVD's only!!!!

1)Visions of Wonder 1-3 (Tommy Wonder)
2)Richard Osterlind's Mind Mysteries 1-4
3)On the Loose 1-4 (Bill Malone)
4)Michael Ammar Easy To Master Card Miracles 1-9
5)Encyclopedia of Card Sleights by Daryl 1-8
6)The Flicking Fingers present: The Movie, Tricks and Fiction from the Road
7)Sal Piacente's Expert Card Magic Lecture Notes 1-2
8)Vernon Revelations (Dai Vernon)

This is my list so far, only the very best of my collection. The Ortiz stuff should be out on DVD very, very soon. I have not seen his stuff on VHS yet so I am very excited that the new format will soon be offered. Maybe these will round out my list.

Things that didn't quite(I love and recommed all of these) make the final cut are in no order:

Green Magic, Best of Sankey, Secret Files by Sankey, Art of Card Manipulation by McBride and well the list goes on and on and is probably of no real interest to anyone but me.

I have not seen Devo's "Cradle to the Grave" yet, but I am very interest in the way that this was shot and put together.

I'd add:

Derren Brown: Devil's Picturebook. I watch this over and over to see a master midirector and performer at work.

Stealing the Show - Pickpocketing DVD by James Freedman. Definitive work by a real gent.

Daryl Does the Full Monte - great teaching DVD, well produced. I developed a good entertaining routine with this DVD using this. Which is what it's all about.

Isn't it interesting that most of these videos being listed on this top 10 list were produced in the last 3-5 years?

I would love to see and own historical compilation tapes depicting the performances of the past masters. I wouldn't care if the tapes were "performance only" and were silent 16 mm conversions. Just being able to watch the style and the audience management and the routining would be invaluable information. And the nostalgia value? Priceless!!

Mike

P.S. I am aware of tapes of the following: Slydini, Dai Vernon, Fred Kaps and Alex Emsley. It would be interesting if other could list any other "oldies but goodies" that are available.

I am a new comer, but was surprised to see only a few votes for D. Roth and none for John Carney? Inspired by Steven's 1st Coin Classics, I am going to get some Carney materials as soon as I work through Roth's Expert Coin M.
Most folks just listed with few comments. So, a compilation may be interesting. Hope I did not mangle anyone's name.

Platt,

I just love watching this tape!! I think Dan Sylvester is a genius at routining. And watching his sight gags (especially his pulling his tongue), is priceless.

Mike

P.S. And his Syvester Pitch and other sleights are sooo well executed and thought out. His pitch of a egg plant (Yes!! An EGGPLANT!!) is just astounding.

Jees! I can't believe someone mentioned the Revelations series. They are pretty awful. Daryl looks bored as hell and the paid audience look catatonic.

I wouldn't pick 10 as there are so many average ones around. But the best I've seen are

Devils Picturebook by Derren Brown - superlative card/mental magic performed really well with good teaching. Great to watch over and over.

Stealing The Show by James Freedman - excellent pickpocket DVD. Sets a standard in high quality teaching and production. Enjoyable to watch

Daryl Does the Full Monte - complete, well performed, well taught. I ended up with a good routine from this .

For metal bending, the hands-down best DVD's I've yet seen are Banachek's excellent "Psychokinetic Silverware" and Patrik Kuffs' Metal Bending: The Real Work" DVD, the latter of which I coincidentally just watched last night so my impressions of it are still quite fresh in my mind.
Regarding Kuffs' DVD, on the back of the DVD was a mention that an assistant with a better command of English would be assisting Patrik on the video and, after having read this, I was a bit concerned that some of Patrik's own verbal descriptions on the DVD might be somewhat hard to decipher.
However, while watching the video it wasn't long before I remember thinking, "Kuffs' explanations are so good that even if I turned the sound off completely I'd still easily understand everything he's trying to convey." Moreover, I had absolutely no trouble understanding his (enjoyably, to me) French-Canadian-inflected English in any case.
Kuffs' DVD is about two hours long and, in my opinion, along with Banachek's "Psychokinetic Silverware" might be be considered to be the two "standards" in metal bending videos that should be consulted by all newcomers to the effect.

To clarify something I wrote in the first sentence of the last paragraph above, I should have more clearly written,

>However, while watching the video it wasn't long before I remember thinking, "Kuffs' *VISUAL* explanations are so good that even if I turned the sound off completely I'd still easily understand everything he's trying to convey." <

In no order, some of my avorite DVDs are

On The Loose-Bill Malone
Scott Alexander DVDs
In The Trenches-Paul Green

Honorable Mention: Hit The ROad

I chose these DVDs for a number of reasons ,the first being that all of these DVDs have time-tested, commercial routines. Another is that that though I can think of some other DVDs with flashier routines, the explanations on these flashy DVDs were very bad, with no thought put into them.

I am sure quite a few of you were surprised I put Hit the Road on my list. This was because in my opnion this is a great DVD not only because of the effects, but because of the atmosphere. The whole DVD is like being at a late night session with to pros. The material is great, and the atmosphere is fun.

Just my two cents,

Jonathan

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Stars of Magic series that Tannen released at least 20 years ago. Incredibly, these tapes were 70 bucks a throw - and these are 1980's dollars. Anyway, I seem to recall that the first four volumes were Frank Garcia, Paul Harris, Derek Dingle and David Roth. Later volumes (I think there were 13 all together) included Harry Lorayne and Eric Decamps. I enjoyed them (alas, I no longer have them) and they were considered state-of-the-art at the time. In fact, I believe it was the first truly professional series if top-notch magicians teaching their tricks on video. Does anyone know if these are now available on DVD?

3-10. Any other Patrick Page work I haven't got......

I don't have this particular dvd, but I have read some very good things about Paul Green's "In the Trenches'. Anyone?

I see that I'm a bit late for the tabulation.

Well when I made my list I had somehow completely forgotten about Derren Brown's "Devil's Picturebook". If you haven't seen it, you must. Derren shows that what he wrote in "Absolute Magic" and "Pure Effect" were not just the idle musings of an armchair magico-theorist but someone who found a way to make magic a very powerful experience for the spectator indeed. You can see just how blown away these people are on the tape and they come off like a pretty astute and reserved bunch to start with at least, a far cry from the L&L circus.

Less important than the spectators experience but just as impressive is Derren's smooth technical mastery of the cards and his supremely confident misdirection. He has also created some interesting and useful moves for the move junkies out there.

I don't know if this is a DVD yet but it certainly deserves mention and I place it above any video I own. I can't imagine that anyone wouldn't think this was terrific but then again this is the Magic Café and there's bound to be someone who doesn't like it much.

Cards...Cards...and more Card DVD magic! This list is mainly focused on finger flickers with Cards.

Is this the best magic? We forget there is a wide group of lay persons who do not like card magic.

Maybe this is why magic has not been accepted as an Art Form.

Although I am deeply sympathetic to your point- I think cards are way over emphasized by magicians and not to continue flogging a deceased equine, that although "Devil's Picturebook" examines effects with cards, the effects are very magical and transcend the routine boredom associated with "pick a card" tricks. Also, there is some very strong mentalism on the tape with a few effects not requiring a deck of cards at all. Also even non card workers could learn a thing or two from Derren's implementation of misdirection, both physical and psychological.

OK, this pony has now officially expired (but maybe he's just pining for the fjords).

I have a question...

What do we mean by Best?
The most enjoyable to watch. Fooled us the most when we first watche the effects. Still fooled us after we watched the explainations. :) Contained the most effects that we use in real world performing situations. Contained the most useful advice outside of trick-teaching. (I think the list goes on)
The problem is, without defining "best" we have a list that may not tell us as much as it could.

BTW, I'm working my way through "Educating John Archer" and it ranks high up in just about all the categories I've listed.
Message: Posted by: kamus (May 22, 2006 09:49AM)
Good question- I would venture to guess that, based on the posts thus far, "best" is a subjective designation inspired by what comes immediately to mind when one is asked "what is best?". That subjective evaluation is likely based on an individual combination of the criteria you suggest. As per your post, it would be helpful if people wrote more about they chose their own candidate for "best".

I noticed a few of you cheated (?) and put down complete volumes sets as one DVD (ie: Bill Malone Vol 1 - 4, Michael Ammar Vol 1 - 6, etc.)

It'd be nice to hear which of the DVD's from each set you value the most (ie: Bill Malone Vol 2, Michael Ammar Vol 5, etc). If you love the whole set, number them in the order you enjoy them. Just a thought.

Rick

PS) My favorite DVD sets are the Michael Ammar Easy to Master series (that's more than 10 right there - hehe), Bill Malone(4), David Regal(7) and John Guastaferro(2). I'll get around to numbering them (as I mentioned above) when I have more time.

I love that we all cheat so much by calling a series one of our top ten!!! This is great, but does not give enough information for those of us who are strapped for cash and cannot buy all fifteen discs or tapes in every series that is out...

With that said, I am working out my list as we speak!
Message: Posted by: ekins (Oct 1, 2006 02:44PM)
For this list it's not cheating to list an entire series since the original posting for that started this topic stated, "A whole series of DVD's can be regarded as one title."

However, I understand you wanting to get additional information for each disc. There can be a difference in the quality of the magic from one disc to another within the same series.

Just had to bump this up and add my own votes. Yes, I realize these are sets, but it would be nearly impossible to select 10 single DVDs!

Dai Vernon Revelations (the rest of the list is in no particular order, but this 17 volume set I would definitely place at the top)
Michael Ammar ETMCM
Bill Malone On the Loose
Richard Osterlind Mind Mysteries
Tommy Wonder Visions of Wonder
Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights

There are many others that are excellent, but these are the ones I would probably recommend without reservations.

You'd be hard pressed to come up with just 10. This thread was started in 2004 and since then, look at the folks at RSVP ( Matthew Dowden's Party Animal and the James Prince's Menu of Miracles DVD's ), Big Blind Media ( Wicked World of Liam Montier ), New York Magic Project ( Got A Light? ) Titanas Productions ( Magic of Nefesch ) Jay Sankey and Kozmo Magic, etc. have all put fantastic DVD's since then.
Message: Posted by: Michael Rubinstein (Aug 17, 2008 09:33AM)
I guess I would have to put in the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights (three volumes), and the New York Coin Magic Seminar series (seven volumes). I feel that these DVD's will stand up to the test of time. The encyclopedia has been around in video and DVD format for over 20 years, and I am sure that the NYCMS set will be a constant reference source as well.

I would say voting on DVD that published in each calander is perhaps more accurate. Maybe everyone can vote up to 3 DVD titles each year. Again, hard to clearly categories each.

The reason I find this thread so interesting is not just that you can get a sense of how different magicians' opinions can be, but it's a useful reference: look through until you find mention of a few DVDs you like and unless you have an astonishingly complete video library already there's a good chance it'll point you towards some material you've never seen but will like. I've done this a couple of times.

As for me, the 'best' ones are not necessarily the classics - they're the ones that either give me a buzz or that contain material I actually use when working rather than just cute tricks for fiddling with on my own time.

In no particular order (all contain effects and moves that I *USE*):
1. Bill Malone - OTL
2. Doc Eason - bar magic
3. Matthew J Dowden - Party Animal (a gem)
4. David Stone - real secrets
5. James Brown - pot of jam
6. Chappy Brazil - watch steal video
7. Gerry & Banachek - phsychokinetic silverware
8. Kostya Kimlat - lecture dvd and roadrunner cull
9. Flicking Fingers - the movie
10.Richard Sanders - fibre optic (a superb stage piece)

oh.. and 11. Michael Ammar - ETMCM series

There are so many out there, it is difficult to choose, as they nearly all have something to offer.

My preference is to see a full performance in front of a live audience, avoiding the normal trick/explanation format. I am extremely grateful that Joe Stevens taped Don Alan's full close-up show in front of a live audience without any breaks.

The Tommy Wonder DVDs are some of the few L&L ones where the audience reactions are predominantly genuine. Pay attention to their reactions during his presentations rather than just at the end.

I've seen so many things that were great and learned a lot from almost every book or video but there are a few which are just mind blowingly good. Although there are a couple which deal with just one sleight and its many uses which I love, the only one that goes on my top list is the Sylvester Pitch because that tape is just pure entertainment above and beyond being an amazing sleight.

Sylvester Pitch
Mickey Silver's Demo
Visions of Wonder
True Astonishments

It took a while but here are the latest totals, I just took the list Mago Gregorio created and continued from there. I debated excluding all of the mentions with only one listing (the list would then shrink by more than half) but decided against it.

As I was compiling it after each post, it was fun to see the constant back and forth battle between Osterlind and Malone for that top spot. Osterlind just pulled ahead by one vote.

Other things I found interesting were the strong showing from some performers on the last few pages of this thread. Even though it has been out a bit (and I’m still wanting to get it), Greg Wilson’s On the Spot picked up quite a few votes as did Doc Eason’s Bar Magic.

David Stone’s Real Secrets Of Magic (and I’m hoping I didn’t confuse some of the tallying with Real Secrets of David Stone) was also very popular. Other notables that did strong late include:

Derren Brown - Devils' Picture Book
David Williamson - Magic Farm
Daniel Garcia - Project
James Brown - Still Fancy a Pot of Jam
Mathew Dowden - Party Animal

Since some of these came out recently compared to the classics we have at the top of the list and they gathered quite a few votes in these last few pages they are definitely now on my radar.

I’ve no doubt made some errors in summing everything but here is where we are currently at:

45 Richard Osterlind - Mind Mysteries
44 Bill Malone - On the Loose
37 Michael Ammar - Easy to Master Card Miracles

I have a question about Max Maven's Video Mind, and it seems very good.
Are the tricks here difficult to do? It would be fine if you could tell if the tricks can done for just a few people?

Ceratini,

There is a lot of info on the Videomind series in the Café if you search on it and doing so would answer all your questions.

The 3 dvd's are separated into parlor, close-up and stage effects. The close-up effects are definitely good for only a few people. Most of the parlor effects can be done for just a few people as well.

Like most mentalism, the effects in general are not technically difficult but will certainly require practice.

Joshua Jay's Talk About Tricks DVD set has to be one of the best values in magic. I wrote a full review on my blog recently: http://calebwiles.blogspot.com/2010/09/top-5-magic-dvd-review-joshua-jays-talk.html

Michael Ammar's Easy To Master Card Miracles is another great value. Greg Wilson's On The Spot is a good resource for those wanting to learn some impromptu magic. The first time I saw the video as a beginner, I was blown away. Bill Malone's On The Loose and Malone on Marlo sets are both packed with great material. I was a little disappointed with Here I Go Again in comparison, but there's some great stuff on that set as well.

For those that are interested, I'm in the process of reviewing my top 5 DVDs in depth on my blog. Talk About Tricks was the first in the series. Some of them are represented on the list above, but some may surprise you. Check it out at http://www.CalebWiles.blogspot.com

I haven't seen everything out there by any means, but if I had to forget it all and choose DVD's from my collection I'd use to start over from scratch with, it would be these (in no particular order):
1 - Daniel Garcia Project (What an awesome project that shows the evolution of a magician's creative abilities over time.)
2 - Paul Harris True Astonishments (it's got something for everyone)
3 - Inside the Mind of Garrett Thomas (some real hidden gems in there)
4 - Osterlind's 13 Steps (easy mentalism)
5 - Greg Wilson's On the Spot & In Action (*tied for me as I first got them together*)
6 - Eccentricks by Charlie Frye (just plain fun!)
7 - New York Coin Magic Seminar (all the coin craft you'll ever need)
8 - Dan and Dave The Trilogy (teaches some beautiful card work)
9 - Sponge by Jay Noblezada (who doesn't love sponge balls!?)
10 - Banachek's PSI or Marc Paul's A.C.T.S. of Mentalism (more mind reading)

Those are some of my most important favorites.
