Many years ago I read a magic book that had an effect with a small buddha statue. All I really remember is that it was probably a book from the public library. It might have been by Bill Severn or Martin Gardner. I remember a line drawing of the buddha statue. The trick could have been called something like "The Benevolent Buddha". Though I could be wrong about that too.

Anyone have any clue about which book this is in?

I think you might be referring to Mulholland's Book of Magic by John Mulholland. It might also be another of his books, Magic of the World.

I think you are right. I found this online. There is a trick called "Ho Chang."
