Has anyone heard any updates on when Mickey might have his DVD on the retention pass ready?
Message: Posted by: Justin Hart (Jul 2, 2004 04:37PM)
If I know Mickey like I think I do, he'll reply when he reads this. So, hang tight.

Mr Silver is really nice but he's probably too busy to be responding to all these posts about when his DVD is coming. There are a few of 'em now and no for certain word from Mr Silver yet.

You know what I think though? I think when it comes out we will all know right away I think it will be the first topics we see here.

It is as yet uncertain that a DVD will *be* coming. I for one would appreciate the performer who chooses to release his works in another way this day in age.

In fact, I would applaud Mickey the most if he simply chose not to release his works to the public at all.

Really, so then how would you have learned anything? Through books that don't exist or videos that don't exist...and who would the teachers be?? No one because no one would know?

Knowledge is precious and it's a good thing that we are willing to share, isn't it?

A couple of months ago, Mickey told me he was looking to have the DVD out by October, but, like I said, that was a while ago and could have changed. We'll just have to be patient and let Mickey release it as his schedule allows. In the meantime, I'm having fun trying to come up with my own version of the move.

I don't think anyone should be working on the "SUV" or ANY of MICKEY's routines or ideas until he's released them. Unless Mickey has given permission to do so.

I've seen on other forums other are working on Mickey's stuff, and to me, it's following along the path of those who took Jonathan Townsend's "VCA" and turned it into "3 Fly" without Mr. Townsend's permission.

Just my opinion.

Joe, I agree, until it's out it's not anyone's other than the creator. But, once it's out, and you have bought that DVD, it's now yours to do with as you please...
Message: Posted by: LiquidSn (Jul 4, 2004 02:41PM)
I have seen the SUV in action and he even taught me and a bunch of guys the mechanics of the sleight. There is no earth shattering revolutionary sleight going on here guys. It is just plain old hard work.

Hope you guys realize that you can't just buy the secret and all of a sudden be the master at it.

In the end, you will have to go through all the trial and errors that Mickey probably went through to get the final result. The only thing great about having a video of the final version is that you have something to work towards.
Message: Posted by: Cruise (Jul 4, 2004 10:13PM)
It's a retention vanish like other ones taught but he claims his is a bit better. If he is as good as everyone says I wouldn't mind listening to his tips to get better at this sort of vanish but you are right, it's not some revolutionary thing.
Message: Posted by: vinsmagic (Jul 5, 2004 02:06AM)
Let me jump in here. First of all, Mickey never taught anyone his retention vanish LiquidSN he may of showed you a vanish as he did at the LVMI but it wasn't his Real Suv.
You are correct in saying it will take hard work, for those who haven't seen his vanish or his spit fly, Mickey's SUV is the best on the planet.

Martin Nash said and I quote, he "has seen Slydini and Goshman and Mickey's coin work is superior to both of them."

Vinny
Ps Mickey will start filming this month.
Message: Posted by: Stuart Hooper (Jul 5, 2004 06:33AM)
Vinny, knowing both Liquid SN and Mickey Silver, I'd be careful about saying what people did and didn't do, with regard to events where you were not present.

Re: Revolutionary. I have the utmost respect for Mickey and his work. Seems to me though that to be revolutionary, coin magic would have to be open handed, motivated, and look moveless...

It's some *** fine looking stuff, though.
Message: Posted by: vinsmagic (Jul 5, 2004 10:34AM)
Mithrandir, not sure what you meant by saying (be careful what I say about people did or did not do).

What I am saying is Mickey never released his Suv to any one.
Mickey visited me several months ago. He told me that he never showed or revealed his SUV to any one not even me...
I hope Mickey answers this post, but I know he is having problems with his computer.

I was present at the magic castle when Martin Nash said that Mickey's work was superior to Slydini and Goshman.

Also I with you hope Mickey never releases his retention vanish and I mean no disrespect to LiquidSn I am just reporting what Mickey told me.

Reverse engineering worked for the Soviet Union...

Well, kinda.
Message: Posted by: Cruise (Jul 5, 2004 12:54PM)
I think you are trying to say that the bad guys will do reverse engineering but it's kind of not nice to say "it's wrong to reverse engineer" that way I think.
Message: Posted by: LiquidSn (Jul 5, 2004 03:01PM)
What kind of retention was he doing when he was doing coin in mouth and the slot machine? was that not the SUV? If not I am interested to see what is this "SUV" is. maybe I am thinking of the wrong vanish?

Or is the SUV just when he shows the coin is still in the "hand"? as I saw on the online demo?
Message: Posted by: Mediocre the Great (Jul 5, 2004 05:00PM)
Cruise,

Reverse engineering is not bad as such... my point was that sometimes reverse engineering doesn't acheive the same results as the origninators.

Didn't mean that one who reverse engineers is a bad guy... I think it's smart to try to figure out how things are done...

If you get the same results as Micky Silver, I think you'd be a genius. His stuff is goooooood. I meant it as a compliment to Micky, not a slam to thinking magicians... I'm sorry it sounded that way.

have fun.

Mickey's SUV is not just a Retention Vanish, as such. It is a combination of things, shift of weight, eye contact, on the off-beat timing, a playful attitude, an "I believe the coin is still there, do you?" demeanor.

Many things make up Mickey's unique magic. Mickey inspired me to study more...greats like Rubinstein, Roth, and most recently, Stone. I may not do Mickey's SUV, but I must say, after all this time, my Ramsey and my retention vanish...plus my utility switches are MILES ahead now.

If I never learn Mickey's SUV, he's help me kick my OWN up a few notches! :bg:

Gratefully,

Doug

Mickey dropped by my office this morning and said that his computer has gone to computer heaven. If I get a chance this week, I'll take a look at it for him. If it can't be repaired, he's ready to buy a new one. Everyone should be patient. He hasn't forgotten you. Also, he also may have shown a few people a very nice retention vanish, but guaranteed, it's not the SUV.

Jim thank you for reenmforcing what I said that Mickey never taught his SUV.
Just because one e mails him this does notcount as knowing him..
I know him personally and I know the way he thinks.
he Never showed his retention vanish SUV to any one/

We both know the way he thinks and it's scary sometimes!

I met Mickey and Larry Barnowsky (the count elmsly) at the Conclave Convention. It looked to me that Mickey had taught Larry the SUV. I'm not sure if it was the SUV exactly, but it looked a lot like it. Larry was even vanishing the coins in his mouth, so either they were the same vanish, or they were very similar. So I think to say that Mickey hasn't shown anyone might not be very accurate, he might have without your knowing (seems impossible but it might be true). But I guess Mickey is the only one who can confirm what he has and hasn't done. Either way, I can't wait for his dvd to come out.

MEDIOCRE THE GREAT!
Ok, I misunderstood and I agree that it won't get the same results.
Message: Posted by: MICKEY SILVER (Jul 7, 2004 02:32AM)
Hi everyone ! Hope everything is going well with all!

I see the "SILVER ULTIMATE VANISH " topic has came up...THANKS GUYS !
I was on my way to perform MAGIC at a trade show in NEW YORK CITY a few WKS ago. I stopped by Jonathan Townsends on the way. As I was getting out of the car, Jonathan caught me off guard by handing me a CHINESE COIN (SILVER DOLLAR SIZE) and asking me to do the SUV. I think Jon perhaps was a bit skeptic, so he wanted to see if I could perform the SUV with a borrowed coin. Jonathan couldn't believe his eyes...He told me it was very impressive....In fact ! Jon is a true SLEIGHT OF HAND EXPERT, he could not figure out the MECHANICS of this move. Jon being very ethical in magic, did not ask me how it was done...I never did tell him ! Was Jon MAD ?..." NO " instead he took me out to Dinner and we ended up talking magic all night. WHAT A INTERESTING NIGHT! I can honestly say JONATHAN is truely a excellent magician as well as a good friend..." It was my turn to say to Jonathan " I couldn't believe my eyes " ..REALLY !
It really means a lot to me when I see people talking about my magic here on the Café' ....When in fact some of the very same people I met in person are absolutely excellent themselves at MAGIC !.....I mean, look at Larry Barnowsky, this guy has created magic routines that would blow your mind. C'mon Larry it's time to show the World ! I am quite sure all will see him in the near future. Take David Ranalli and his killer card routine. This Kid totally flipped me out .."WOW".he is truely an up comming PRO magician. "THE GOD FATHER" of MAGIC himself (we know him as VINSMAGIC ) is a absolute true card mechanic along with extreme knowledge of coins, ropes, rubber bands ,silks etc..etc..etc. At the MAGIC CASTLE I MET Café' members as well ! Kirk Grodske..THIS GUY IS SOMETHING ELSE..seeing is believing when it comes to Kirk. JIM CANADAY IS ANOTHER..unreal!
Can't forget Charlie C. for he is truely the future of MAGIC. luismagic..WOW..talk about MATRIX! Café' member and great guy..CHARLES SCHNEIDER..HE! is a true lover of COIN MAGIC. AH! we must not forget JAMES Lac and Lonnie Dillion ,two of the finest sleight of hand mechanics you could ever meet, along with being two of the nicest guys ! AND OF COURSE Café' Members Tom Gilbert and Mark Jensen!!!! It was such a pleasure meeting these Café' members in person and seeing how fantastic their magic is.

Getting back to "Silvers Ultimate Vanish" I CAN HONESTLY SAY I HAVE NEVER SHOWN ANYONE THE MECHANICS OF THIS SLEIGHT. I HAVE HOWEVER IN THE PAST SHOWED PEOPLE MY REGULAR RETENTION VANISH...."BUT" NEVER THE SUV.
PLEASE NOTE: INVOLVED IN THE SUV IS A VERY INTERESTING SLEIGHT....THIS SLEIGHT IS UNDETECTABLE TO THE EYE AND TO THE WAY WE THINK. I was showing DAN SYLVESTER this one night a few month ago at the MAGIC CASTLE....HE COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT HE COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT.. I WAS SHOWING DAN IN SLOW MOTION and about 20 INCHES IN FRONT OF HIS FACE...AND I WAS LAUGHIN BECAUSE HE HAD HIS COSTUME ON, MAKING NOISES..LOL...WHAT A GREAT GUY! "REALLY"

PLEASE NOTE: THE SUV CAN BE PERFORMED SURROUNDED WHILE SOMEONE IS BEHIND ME LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER AND STILL NOT BE DETECTED... I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A RETENTION VANISH .."THAT CAN BE PERFORMED SURROUNDED"

THE COIN IS PLACED IN MY LEFT HAND....LEAVING ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT IN ANYONES MIND......REMEMBER! that's BECAUSE THIS SLEIGHT WILL NOT ALLOW THE HUMAN MIND TO ACCEPT IT. It has never been in writing and is totally original...100 PER CENT!

I HAVE PLANS ON RELEASING ALL MY ORIGINAL SLEIGHTS IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE...INCLUDING MOST OF ALL "THE SUV"

THANKS A MILLION FOR READING GUYS!

YOUR GOOD FRIEND,

MICKEY

Thank's for clearing that up Mickey.

Hi folks,

Yes I asked Mickey to do his move using a borrowed coin. I thought he got in the door before I made this request... guess I was a bit eager.

Mickey did some magic at the restaurant before dinner. He took a silver dollar, tapped it on a plate, and it SHATTERED into four quarters. And repeated it with a second silver dollar. He also did his coin through table. Impressive. Was so good I did not ask about mechanics. Not too often I get to see material that good. And is fun just to enjoy... eye candy :)

Just so folks can hear it directly, I have not been so impressed with a vanish since I saw David Roth do the retention pass back in 75. The words in Greater Magic about a totally convincing coin vanish ring true again.

Was a fun evening, he is a gracious guest. Come back anytime.

:)

Jon

Mickey, heck guy, I just wanted to thank you for sticking my name in amongst the guys in your list. I think my magic just got a couple of degrees better from being in the same room as the rest'8) I can tell you this though, no matter who gets to hold which trophy, it would be hard to find a classier guy than Mickey Silver.

Everyone I've shown Mickeys SUV demo video to has been blown away. I'd love to see his other ideas with coins and cant wait till he releases his DVD.

Mr. Silver (hey, I don't feel right calling you Mickey), I'm absolutely "giddy" about your upcoming release. Please hurry...there's money about to burn a hole in my pocket!

Mark,
I truly am looking forward to breaking my promise not to buy any more books/videos.
At 70 years of age, I still try not to purchase another work of magic.
Notice that I said "magic"?
That is what Mickey does with his hands.

I hate it when people say "do a trick for me". I always tell them that "animals and some people do tricks, I do magic".

Look at Mickey's eyes and his gestures. He looks like he really can do "magic" and I love his work.

Tom Wolf
Message: Posted by: markjens (Jul 9, 2004 05:07PM)
Tom, you are right about that. I have never met anyone who has actually seen Mickey work who didn't think it was magic. It is pretty rare when an unknown entity shows up at an event and has some of the top magicians in the world scrambling to see him work. This is what happened at Jeff McBride's school the night before LVMI. I am talking about major names in magic all crowding into a small classroom to see the 'human slot machine.' That is a nickname that I am glad didn't stick, because Mickey is so much more than that. He is no 'one trick wonder,' that's for sure. There were any number of people who were circling, like vultures to the kill, but the people who cared about Mickey circled around him, and made sure he wasn't taken advantage of. Mickey is too nice a guy not to protect. If the future of magic could be as kind and as classy as Mickey, it would be bright indeed. There is no attitude of superiority, rather, he is sort of like Doug Henning was; he performs magic AND he believes in it. He not only performs it, but he shares the wonder of it with his audience. I am always honored to be among that audience, and count on me to crowd into any small room in which Mickey is working.
