Topic: Help with effect

A friend and I are going to be in a show that seats over 500 people. I am going to be doing close-up before the show, and he (along with some other great magicians), are going to be doing a magic show. I have been asked to also do some magic for just about 2-4 minutes, between two other performers. I mainly do close-up, though I do know a few parlor/stage effects. If I don't think I can do it, someone else will be able to, but I need some suggestions for effects that don't cost a lot of money, but play big. I don't have any stage illusions, but I was thinking maybe a rope through body routine, or something similar? Thanks for any advice.

Do a cut and restored rope effect. Make it comical. Bring out a chainsaw, and start to cut the rope which is held in the spectator's hands. Rethink it and say that you could end up getting hurt. So bring out a sword and say that the rope deserves a swift and painless death. Again, rethink it, saying you're not sure how to slice it at the correct angle. If you don't cut it right, it could ruin the trick. So put on a blackbelt and head band and pretend to be a karate expert. Stand far back and pretend like you're going to drop-kick it or something. Again, rethink it, saying it's not a good idea because you forgot to do your warm up exercises. Finally, find a pair of scissors (or produce them from some place that's very comical) and continue with the rope effect. I've done this many times before, and it always gets a good laugh.

Anything that floats. Try playing with your ITR. It looks cool from afar. :)

Also, you can do manipulations of cards or cigarettes. :)

Another good idea is to plant a card in someone's pocket before the show. Do a card trick and force a card which is the same card in the victim's pocket. Vanish the card by your favorite method, then point to the audience victim. :)

The good ol' Tenyo "What's Next" spot card is a proven stand-by for this type of situation.

I would use Mayne's Bowling Ball From an Empty Paper Sack. I saw it on his Shock FX video and I think it would work great for a large audience and could be totally mimed with little practice.

Do a milk pitcher effect. It is inexpensive, can be seen from a good distance, is a great effect and requires very little practice.

You said that you were doing 2-4 minutes so I would suggest turning the milk into a white silk and with that silk, go on to do another effect

Hope this helps!

2-4 minutes...

I second the rope idea. You don't necessarily have to do a C&R routine but rope is easy to see, something can be done quick, and it is familiar.
