Topic: Apparently Impromptu
Message: Posted by: Jaz (Aug 29, 2004 03:20PM)
This topic is not intended for full time, professional magicians but for part time mages and hobbyists.

Can you name some props that would seem impromptu to the friends, family and co-workers who know you best?

Please name items that fit your everyday lifestyle and work environment.

My favourite is the real 3 card monte cos you can repeat it time and time again... too much stuff can only be shown once so for friends and family it's a one hit wonder... (I've just bought Whit's street shells for same reason amongst others)

Cards and coins... Plenty of tricks you can do with those:
coin matrix,
coin vanish and reappearence
coins acros,
various pick a card tricks,
ambitious card,
packet tricks ( jumping gemynie, twisting the aces,...)

Come to think of it, there is probably enough material to impromtu with cards and coin to go on for over an hour.... with the added benefit that you can borrow the coins from anyone, and probably the cards too (My mother in law is always handing me her deck of cards, telling me to show her something new...)!

Have a good day!

I really love coins even though I'm not good at coin magic. Anyone mostly who just walks around the streets have coins. Just borrow some and BAM! you're ready for your impromptu routine

My favorite tricks are
Something Out of Nothing by Gregory Wilson
Revolution Coin Vanish
Invisible Wand Vanish
Coin Under Watch
Recap (a routine done with a pen)
Strike Vanish on a Coin

that's my favorites.. :)

Rubberbands, usual coins, bills, pen, matches, lighter, safety pins, cigarettes, spoon (bending)... and every "levitable/PK-movable" light object.

In first sight, here is all my "impromptu" (other than cards) material.

Jonathan.

I notice that a few of you have included card packet effects. For me these are not "items that fit your everyday lifestyle and work environment" as mentioned at the beginning of this topic. They're great fun but I don't see how would seem impromptu.

Borrowed cards are acceptable to me.
No need to give the effects you do.

I also have to say that in my part of the USA that half dollars are also not a common.

Here are props and effects I have used in my everyday life:

Quarter (Q) S***l

other coin s***ls

F**d**g Q

Spare Change - Acer

Double X

Swami or nail wr***er

$100 Bill Switch

Coins with drilled hole the size of a toothpick and stirrer

Bent coins

TT

IT reel or other set up

D'Lite

Bending spoon

LinKey - Solari

a bill that appears to fold itself. Forget the name.

Slush Powder
At work I had rope, paper, paper clips and elastics to work with.

When I was attired in a dinner jacket it became a whole new game.

I also came up with some of my own props.
Enough for now.

Thanks for all your input and opinions.

You can get a pen with a reel inside it for some animation effects so if you wear a shirt with a pocket in it you can put a pen in there it.

If you are lucky and you borrow a deck exactly like the trick one in your pocket it looks as though you just borrowed the deck, or do a memorized deck routine, Svengali, there are many things you can do with a borrowed deck, or just have a db card so you can do a clean dlift and put their card in the middle, there is just a little clean up after but well worth it when they see nothing happen after they put the card on the deck and you simply turn it over and put it in the deck.
a few suggestions
Roger

Basically I like any basic slight with regular cards and coins like finding a chosen card, reading a mind of the person to tell their chosen card, coin thru body.

A Flash Bill. They are a tad expensive, but I'm sure you'd get a great reaction using them.

I know it's going to sound lame, but I have a blast doing the pellet trick, with peanuts, jelly beans (colors have to match!), matches or whatever. It seems like a doofy little trick but people are dumbfounded by it.

Jaz,

Outside of the normal realm, some newer effects and props that seem impromptu and fit everyday lifestyle and work environment:

- Self-tying shoelaces: people notice your shoe untied and you tie it magically

- Kranzo's moving tan line: perfect during summer where you can show a tanline and then your specs see you move it

- Fraud: you can magically move printing on a bill

- Hundy 500: you perform a powerful bill change

The more I think about ideas, the more I believe almost any effect can appear impromptu under the right circumstances :)

I'm a computer geek, and sometimes wear a pocket protector just for fun. Because of that, pen and pencil based gimmicks work well for me. I switch out carrying the Pen Through Bill, #2 Pencil, a Hot Rod Pen, a Bic pen for the 'Snapper' effect, and an extensible inspection mirror for a comedy bit of trying to sneak a peek at a selected card. I've also got a Bic pen I've stuffed with a stack of neodymium disc magnets which can be highly useful. I've got a pen with a clear plastic tube body that I use for a Bill to Pen effect.

I'd like to add a PK Pen, Pen Reel, and a few others.

I occasionally use a gag or three like a bang cap pen, shocking pen, invisible ink pen, or rubber pencil.

I also have many, many pen-like items I can swap in that are just good conversation pieces, such as game pens (Connect Four, Spirograph), different pen-like tools, nesting toolsets, etc.

Yes, I know, too much of a good thing. :)

Airship,
Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

shiolo and close-up,
I somewhat disagree with Scotch & Soda and half dollars being seen as impromptu and above suspicion simply because they are not coins that are commonly found in everyday life.
But hey, I myself have done the same thing on impromptu occasions.

Thanks all,

Jaz, I sometimes carry a squeeze coin purse with double-headed quarter, double-tailed quarter, dime & penny, copper-washed steel pennies, penny shell, and folding quarter. That's practically a whole act right there.

I've also got some gimmicked business cards for a mentalism bit (slightly different patterns so I can keep track of who writes what).

The topic is about "props that would seem impromptu".
In other words, gaffs, gimmicks and things unseen.

I'll add
Jaxon's
"Outsmokin'" and "Bill Burner Clear".

Thanks.
